John McCain will end worthless scientific studies on bear DNA
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 12:54 PM by Truth Hurts A Lot
etc. MSNBC just tuned in to his latest Townhall. :eyes:

Any PhD folks should take note as it seems to me that he wants to put an end to government funding of most scientific research that he doesn't find worthy.

1. I've been yelling obscenities in response to his little rant.
He looks and sounds like he's cranked up this morning. I wonder how long until he crashes and has to take a nap.

2. LOL. So true. They put him on something. He's crashing now I think
At first his sentences were super long and fast... Now he's slowing down. Thank goodness they're cutting away now.

3. That's a shame.
Molecular biological studies on bears give insights into things like, say, lipidomics. Which is essential for the study of human cardiovascular disease.

4. What about all those people inserting DNA from E coli into human cells?
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 12:36 PM by enki23
And with government funding! Your tax dollars pay to desecrate living, breathing human cells with bacterial DNA!

:sarcasm: (for the molecular biology impaired).
John McCain is a fucking tool.

6. I spend much of my time inserting human DNA into E. coli...
How's that for the "ewwww" factor?

10. Well...

I spent the morning putting E Coli DNA into E Coli, so that I can take it back out, chop it up, and stick it into human breast cells. This, of course, is something that is clearly beyond the pale, and almost ever done ever, ever ever, in science labs around the world. I mean, imagine what would happen if the government wasted millions of dollars doing this sort of stuff in college freshman and sophomore biology classes. It's just completely uncalled for. Worse, I'm going to be doing some CLONING. That's right. CLONING. It's a damned outrage. How can they let me do this stuff?

Worse. I'm about to murder *millions* of breast cells today, just because I don't need all of them. Each one a tiny, genetically complete (well, more or less) human life. And I think I got some E Coli on my shoes in the process (without even doing it the old fashioned way). So there. I think it's clear that I win.

13. I don't know, I'm currently TORTURING some human kidney cells...
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 01:13 PM by Kristi1696
FETAL human kidney cells...

I gave them a chemical that is slowing starving them and in a few hours, I will kill them. And a couple of days ago, I put some freaking firefly DNA in them. Yes, that's right, firefly DNA. That's pretty perverse, no?

16. Hey, that's what *I'm* going to do! Get your own torture techniques
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 01:20 PM by enki23
I'm going to make GLOWING HUMAN BREASTS (...tumor cells). But before that, I'm going to kill off millions of microscopic BREAST CANCER PATIENTS by poisoning them just enough so that only the ones who are contaminated with E Coli DNA survive. Something only a twisted Darwinist scientist could come up, I'm certain.

But yours are Fetal, so I suppose you do actually win. I think the hierarchy goes something like bears-> monkeys-> male humans-> dogs-> breast cancer patients-> fetuses. So you just edge me out, I think. I'll try not to be bitter.

Radical, shit-disturbing stuff, that DNA.

8. Who is John McCain to decide which scientific studies are "worthless"?
I didn't know he has a PhD.

He doesn't know shit about molecular biology, and he shouldn't try. Right now I'm looking at a sequence alignment of human, cow, rat, mouse, rabbit and chicken DNA. Comparing these sequences gives me enormous insight into which regions are important in the protein I research. The more sequences I have, the greater the power this prediction has. The more sequences I have, the less time and taxpayer money (yes, the government pays for my work) I have to waste "guessing" which areas might be important for human disease. These sequences are invaluable and John McCain can take his ignorant ass and go suck an egg.

There's something he said I need to google. He mentioned something about him not voting for/support any pork barrel projects or something........it didn't sound right but I need to listen to the meeting again.

17. Wow! This isn't the first time McCain has expressed outrage over grizzly bear studies
and it turns out, this is an issue he brings up all the time, complete with a lame joke:

McCain also hits the research in speeches on the stump, cracking jokes about bear paternity tests and criminal investigations. "I don't know if it was a paternity issue or criminal, but it was a waste of money,"

http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=mccains-beef-with-bears

FactCheck: Criticized $3M "bear DNA" study, but voted for it
McCain's TV ad criticizes an earmark that provided "$3 million to study the DNA of bears in Montana." This is not the first time McCain has poked fun at the bear project. He first mentioned it on the Senate floor, on Feb. 13, 2003: "One can only imagine and conjure up an idea as to how this might be used. Approach a bear: That bear cub over there claims you are his father, and we need to take your DNA. Approach another bear: Two hikers had their food stolen by a bear, and we think it is you."
Good laugh lines, maybe, but the USGS's Grizzly Bear Project didn't study DNA for paternity tests or forensics. Rather, it explored a means of estimating Montana's grizzly bear population by analyzing bear fur snagged on barbed wire.

McCain he didn't actually try to remove the bear project from the bill. He did introduce three amendments to reduce funding, but none removing the grizzly bear project appropriations. And despite his criticisms, he voted in favor of the final bill.
