Has there ever been a contested VP selection.
This is mostly conjecture.

But it seems like no matter who Mcain picks he is going to have troubloe with the base,

For instance. choosing Tom Ridge would royally piss off the fundies...they could conceivably nominate Huckabee from the floor. But nominating Huckabee could raise the ire of fiscal conservatives and those tired of the the fundies dictatimg anything to the party. Any historical precedents for a job that no one really wants?

1. Has there ever been a VP choice contrary to the nominee's choice?
(i.e. foisted on the nominee at the convention with his explicit disapproval)

2. In 1956
Adlai Stevenson threw the choice to the floor of the convention. There were multiple ballots, I believe, and Estes Kefauver edged out Senator John Kennedy, and ran on the ticket with Stevenson.

3. in the 'early days' the VP was the one who got the 2nd highest number of votes
we changed that in 1804 with 12th amend which required electors to vote for one prez and one VP.

There are been scuffles at the convention, back when it was traditional to wait until the convention to pick a VP.

6. In 1940, the delegates to the Democratic National Convention
emphatically did not want and were prepared to defeat FDR's choice of running mate - Henry Wallace. The only reason they eventually nominated Wallace was because FDR let it be known he would withdraw from the race if they rejected his choice for Vice President.
