While Élysée tried not make much of the visit by employing minimum protocol, French President Nicolas Sarkozy, after an hour-long private meeting, today gave U.S. Senator Barack Obama the honour of a joint press conference at which he hailed the "very good news" of change in American politics. At the request of Obama's campaign team, no American flag was on stage for the press conference, as Obama was being received as a candidate and not the U.S. President.
Barack Obama in Paris would have to be a short movie though, as the Democratic candidate has reserved dinner with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Though short, it was intense Sarkozy welcomed the visit. After receiving John McCain in the spring, it was Barack Obama's turn and the difference in popular support was sharp.
Nicolas Sarkozy spoke highly of both candidates, noting that he is the only French politician to have already met them both in Washington in 2006 when he was Interior Minister. He said he kept "very good memories" of this meeting and was quoted in the French media as saying, "Obama? That's my buddy."
"Contrary to what my advisers from the diplomatic circle said, I never believed Hillary Clinton stood a chance. I have always said that Obama would be appointed," he said.
