Obama to meet Merkel next Thursday

(AP) BERLIN - Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman says the German leader will welcome U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama to her office in Berlin next Thursday.

Spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm says the meeting at the chancellery is expected to take place on Thursday morning.

Obama’s stop in Berlin is part of a tour of the Middle East and Europe aimed at burnishing the Democratic candidate’s foreign policy credentials.

Obama also is expected to deliver a speech in Berlin. It remains unclear where that event might take place.

1. don't worry, Angela!
This American president has enough common sense to refrain from impromptu massages!

3. Obama: "Hello, Chancellor Merkel. It's an honor to meet you."
Merkel: "You're...you're not gonna try and rub my back or anything, right?"

5. Despite Angela Merkel's public admonishment re the possible Obama
address at the Brandenburg Gate, I have a feeling she will come away from their meeting persuaded that this man, and not the current U.S. pResident, is the truer global personality, the global problem-solver, the restored opportunity for improved relations between her nation and ours.

If she somehow still fails to pick up on that, I think the European media will assist her.

Barack Obama is poised for a very triumphant appearance in Germany.

6. One more visit to this thread in hopes of drawing attention to Barack
Obama's upcoming world travel.

That's what presidents do -- they establish a presence in the greater world. The weaker presidents drive around ranches in pickup trucks and clear brush. Sometimes for months at a time.

Think of the caliber of attention Berliners gave to John Kennedy when he spoke there. "We have stopped what we were doing to listen to the young American president speak to us."

I hope those of us who cannot travel to Berlin to hear Obama's address there will have some chance of hearing it from a web link. If ever we needed the internet machine, this is the time.

John McCain could also board an airplane and give an address at some historic site. But the caliber of attention would be far less. Obama is a Bellini, a Miles Davis, a Leonardo. McCain is a grizzled old crank whose time has come and gone. "Old Europe" is really more visionary than anything the United States has come up with socially or politically in the last 8 years.

Merkel probably realizes she is going to have to update her file on Barack Obama. Sooner would be better than later.

I'm rooting for Barack Obama, Community Builder, to thrill Europe to its bones and blood with that speech.
