Dem Party chief to head South this week for votes

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean is embarking on a voter registration bus tour he hopes will help push Dixie to the Democrats.

Dean's trip begins Thursday in President Bush's hometown of Crawford, Texas, riding an eye-catching bus wrapped in the red, white and blue of presidential candidate Barack Obama's campaign logo.

Dean said in a telephone interview that he'll focus on winning over people who are struggling economically.

"We think that they have been disillusioned," said Dean, a former Vermont governor and presidential candidate in 2004. "Many of them voted for George Bush. We think they want something new and we're going to provide it for them."

I love that the first stop is in Crawford, Texas. What a great symbolic move.

3. Partial itinerary
From the OP

Dean's travel plans include:

_ A drive from Crawford to Austin on Thursday.

_ Stops Friday in New Orleans and the Mississippi cities of Hattiesburg and Jackson.

_ Visits to the Louisiana cities of Shreveport and Baton Rouge on Saturday.

_ On July 25, three stops are planned in North Carolina — Raleigh, Greensboro and Charlotte.

_ July 26 takes him to Georgia for visits to Savannah, Macon and Atlanta.

_ In August, the bus is scheduled to make stops in Midwest swing states like Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana before it heads to Denver for the Democrat National Convention, which opens Aug. 25.

4. That great!
I hope they get some coverage and we hear soon how well they do.

Sometimes Dean reminds me of the little engine who could. Or the Energizer bunny. Take your pick.

6. He reminds me of Forrest Gump sometimes.
He's so ignorant he doesn't know he can't do these things, so he just does them, and they work.

7. I hope it does get coverage.
But I sort of doubt it unless the bloggers do it in the various states.

8. Maybe Keith will cover it
He has a lot of catching up to do. But Dean's going to Crawford is something Keith would appreciate. I can imagine the twinkle in his eye reporting such "news".

5. Ah, Howard.
Remember when everyone here excoriated him for saying the Democratic Party should be the party of southerners with confederate flag stickers on their pick-ups, too? Now that y'all see what he meant, how you feel about it now?

The south is angry and bitter, too. We have given a lot to this nation. We have a disproportionate number of military bases, and like many inner cities, we have a lack of job opportunities, which means we produce more than a fair share of troops. For its Republican support, BushCo has rewarded the South with dead soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines, he's shortchanged them when Charley, Jeanne, Ivan, Katrina, and Rita wiped out large portions of their coastline, he's given them $4 a gallon gasoline in a region with fewer cities and more distances than average, and he's decimated their incomes with high unemployment, falling wages, and lack of regulation of the mortgage industry that's starting to look like 1929.

Now's a good time for a party that actually cares to swing through the region and remind its citizens that they have the power to vote their abusers out of office.

Hey, Howard, sorry I ever doubted you. :toast:

Read the comments. It is this way all over the internet. Tragic and sad.

10. Dean is kicking the tour off at Netroots Nation....great pic of bus
Sorry so few find this interesting...but his favorite saying was about Crawford TX in 2003. I am glad he gets to go there in any capacity, cause it is time for TX not to belong to Bush anymore.

From Daily Kos.

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/7/15/15564/0847/141/552108

"To everyone lucky enough to be in Austin this week for the convention, another event has been added to the calendar. DNC Chairman Howard Dean will begin a nationwide voter registration drive with a rally at Netroots Nation to be held Thursday at 12:00, directly across from the convention center.

This is the kickoff event for Register for Change, a cross country bus tour designed to "build on the overwhelming enthusiasm and voter turnout seen during the primaries" and is a part of "the 50-state strategy and Senator Obama's commitment to running a 50 state campaign."

From Texas, the tour heads to New Orleans - a city that experienced the failings of Republican leadership in Washington firsthand - and then to Shreveport and Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Hattiesburg and Jackson, Mississippi. The second swing, July 25-26, will make stops in North Carolina and Georgia - two untraditional battleground states where voter registration efforts will help lead Barack Obama to victory in November. The tour will hit states in every part of the country, culminating in a swing through the Midwest on its way to the Democratic Convention in Denver."

is taking on his voter registration tour! What an awesome idea somebody had.

I'm going down to Georgia in August by car..who knows maybe we'll catch sight of it.

Wonderfully symbolic to start in Crawford, Texas.
