Obama opens up first double digit lead in Iowa .. Rasmussen
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/iowa/election_2008_iowa_presidential_election

Barack Obama has taken a double-digit lead over John McCain 48% to 38% in the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in Iowa. When “leaners” are included, the Democrat is ahead 51% to 41%.

In June, Obama enjoyed a seven-point lead in the battleground state. That lead represented a push for Obama from May, when he was ahead by just 2 percentage points. McCain has held steady now at 38% for two months in a row.

The race is closer among voters not affiliated with either political party. Among those voters, Obama has a 38% to 34% lead. In June, Obama had a much larger lead 44% to 29% lead among those voters.

1. This is great news.
Lots of Rsumussen polls out today showing Obama increasing his lead in swing states and consolidating it in blues states

In Michigan, up by 8 % and in Minnesota, he's up by 18 pts!

6. Some of the state polls include cell phone users
Also as was covered extensively, a lot of the polls are oversampling republicans as of late. They havent been reflecting the shift in party affiliation that has occurred over the last 2 years, nor are they counting on the massive new voter registrations across the country.

9. My theory is that...
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 06:02 PM by cbc5g
When he makes speeches and focuses on faith and red state issues, he loses support in blue states where he is solidly ahead but gains traction in red states. So it may reflect in the national polls. When he needs to gain traction in red states he focuses on red state issues like faith, patriotism etc. It doesn't matter if he wins California or New York by 30%. If he can't win any more states than the ones Kerry won, he'll lose.
