Morning Show Summary

Morning Show Summary

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Networks kicked off with reports on the potential rescue of mortgage lender giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, along with political news including the New Yorker cover with the Obamas.

On NBC’s “Today,” Rep. Harold Ford criticized the New Yorker cover, said “I’ve never seen a candidate treated like this at this point in a campaign.” Acknowledged Obama changed position on public finance, but defended his other position shifts.

On ABC’s “Good Morning America,” report looked at possible VP maneuvering, quoted Jack Kemp saying you can’t campaign for the spot. James Carville defended the New Yorker, called the cover smart satire. Talked possible VP choices, said Obama choosing Hagel or another Republican is unlikely.

On MNSBC’s “Morning Joe,” Obama strategist Axelrod said the campaign isn’t happy about the New Yorker cover, but they’re focused on other issues. Said he is not concerned by recent poll numbers, and acknowledged Bernie Mac’s jokes were inappropriate and made for “an awkward moment.”

On CNN’s “American Morning,” Sen. Chris Dodd , chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, said Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac are “in very sound shape” and praised the Bush plan to strengthen them.

1. Yeah, so much for the "they're not going to cover the New Yorker" meme

You'd think by now people would have more sense about what gets covered by msm.

6. But they are talking about it as satire
and whether it works as the snippets indicate. You and others seemed to say it was going to just be "SEE HE'S A DAMNED MUSLIM" 24/7.

8. They're talking about it, they're showing it.

You seem not to understand how images are used in media. They can say "but it's satire," and that doesn't change a thing. The IMAGE is what will be shown, what will copied and sent all over the nation via email.

If you're unconcerned about the problems Obama has due to this kind of disparagement, that's your point of view. I don't share it, and neither do most politically astute Democrats.

10. Well Jesus Christ on a pogo stick.
If one is so damned bent on believing that it is satire that when a news show gives the image and says it is satire and talks about whether it makes the point and discusses the point that it is trying to make yet you STILL use that same image as "proof" that Obama is a muslim, then one is beyond hope and should probably be institutionalized for their own good.

Do you really think that little of the LIV?

12. Naive?
So explain it to me. Where do I go wrong with this reasoning:

There are a few different groups that will see and react to this cartoon.

A. Obama supporters: they don't believe the muslim/flagburning/blackpanther bullshit and this cartoon will not cause them to. Cartoon causes no net harm.

B. Obama detractors: they do believe it and will continue to believe it. Cartoon causes no net harm.

C. Undecided: probably don't believe it. The only way there is a net harm to the cartoon is if you are saying that those people are so damned stupid that they can't process the discuss of the cartoon as satire and are so entranced by shiney objects so that just flashing the image on the screen will cause them to go into a zombie-like state and start chanting "Obama is a muslim; must not vote for him" which is a pretty elitist attitude that you would have no support for statistically.

But, hey, whatever, you keep subscribing to the "magic bullet theories" of television that were popular in the 50s and I will stick with the plethora of studies that show the theory to be wrong.

2. It was on the local Fox News. Plus MSNBC, repeated it, repeated it and
repeated it. And they had a hack on from the New Yorker who said Obama's position on one issue was weaselly.

Another Obama Bash fest, another day in the life of corporate media.

The Corporate Media has a VESTED INTEREST in who is the next President. The way they attack Obama DAILY should be proof that he is the one.

3. Most of the coverage was sympathetic toward Obama on this one.
I believe this cover will do more than just about anything else in inoculating Obama from baseless, scurrilous attacks.

4. Interesting. You could be right.
Although I hope it doesn't prompt a lot of people to buy the magazine or read the article, because the article itself sucked (and had nothing to do with the cover).

5. MSNBC Header: The New Yorker wanted to get this OUT IN THE OPEN.
The coverage I saw was NOT sympathetic.

7. No Way
It is going to cause him to lose the election. Everyone will think he is a muslim and Michelle is a black panther. They will, they will, they will.

:sarcasm: because some people are sadly too stupid to realize that.

9. I haven't watched any of the coverage, but turned it on MSNBC out of curiosity
to see Joe Watkins exclaiming "The cover is not fair to John McCain!" (ok, he also said it wasn't fair to Obama as well, but it still made me laugh that that's the first thing I heard when I turned it on).
