DU PROJECT -- THE GREAT SWIFT BOAT-GOP SEARCH !
Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 09:45 AM by Skinner
I apologize for ripping this idea off from Junkdrawer. But it's such a great idea that I'm going to see if we can't get this thing organized for real.

Pick a state, Check the state GOP website, then post back in this thread with the following information:

1. Name of state
2. Link to State GOP
3. Does it have any mention of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth?
4. If you can, grab a screenshot. If not, someone else can grab the shot for you after you post.

8. I've checked the South Carolina site already--
Edited on Sat Aug-21-04 10:52 PM by scmirage
couldn't find anything there other than news items.
I also searched the Richland, Greenville, and Aiken County GOP websites in South Carolina and came up with Nada. But I hit pay dirt with Guilford County, NC (it's already been archived by some of the oh-so-fab DU'ers)!!!

On Edit:
Charleston County
Darlington County
Anderson County
Georgetown County
Horry County
Richland County
Aiken County
Greensville County

all clear.

299. Yes there is
Thursday's Drudge Report quotes a soon-to-be-released book by the man who took over John Kerry's Swift Boat as saying: "Kerry carried a home movie camera to record his exploits for later viewing and reenacted combat scenes for film while in Vietnam revisiting ambush locations for reenacting combat scenes where he would portray the hero, catching it all on film."

What's more, William Shumadine, a member of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, has called the unauthorized use of a photograph with John Kerry and 19 of his swift boat comrades in a campaign ad, "a complete misreprentation to the public and a total fraud. Only two of John Kerry's 23 fellow Swift boat commanders from Costal Division 11 support his candidacy today."

On a PC, press key F13/Print screen. On a Macintosh, press Command, shift, and 3. Then open in your word or graphics application and paste. Save as a .jpg file and upload to your server.

308. Hold the "ALT" button down and press "Print Screen" for PC
This copies the screen to the clipboard. Next, open your photo editing software and paste it on the canvas. If you do not have photo editing software but are running windows, then click on "start" "all programs" "accessories" and then "Paint"

You can paste the screen capture there. When you save the file, click on the down arrow for the file type. Choose .jpg and give it a name.

35. I think it's worth mentioning here.
But it's not evidence of coordination. I'm sure there are folks here who know the relevant law. My understanding is that we should be looking for stuff like advertising swiftboat events or soliciting money for them.

I saw no link or mention of Swift Boat Veterans--- website doesn't appear overly timely and is very generic in nature. I checked a few locals (e.g., El Paso County GOP-- i.e., Colorado Springs and Douglas County as well--nothing). These appear to be pretty officious sites, limited to basic Colorado and county-specific info with links to Bush-Cheney04 for any national discussion.

26. Okay, the Ohio GOP official website
appears to be clean, at least on a Google search by site:

http://www.ohiogop.org

I'd have done a screenshot, but since there's no incriminating evidence for the Ohio GOP site, I didn't. In fact, I didn't even 'go there' -- it's tough enough just living in Ohio, let alone reading 'their' web site!

But there wasn't any indication they had any links, positive or negative, to the Swift Boat Liars. In fact, their intro page requires a sign-up and they can just bite me if they think I'm signing up to beat myself over the head with a tire iron.

238. Hmmm....take a second look
Does anyone else see where it says: "IMPORTANT: Click Here to see a 1 min video of what those that served with John Kerry really think of his Vietnam service."

That link leads to a site shilling the unfit for command book.

(also note, I don't think this is Louisiana, this is the Los Angeles County GOP site)

They talk about the Swift Boat vets at length and wail about "the liberal media." How do you do a screen capture? I saved the page but I don't know what to do with it.

69. I've got a screenshot of sorts
You click ALT and Printscreen at the same time. Print screen should be somewhere near the top of your keyboard on the right. On my laptop keyboard it's on the top row, to the right of the function keys and abbreviated PrtSc. Then you copy and paste into a doc. I've got a screenshot in wordpad format (cuz I ain't got Word, long story). The shot includes the website address in the address bar and the relevant text. Couldn't get everything cuz the homepage is too long.

Who wants it?

67. Connecticut
ctgop.org

nothing.

I think the gop in ct has crumbled a bit. Their last newsletter was in Jan (about when the ctgop agreed to investigate Rowland). I was a little suspicious when the ctyoungrepublicans.org link came up with a "site not found' message. But given the rest of the site, maybe it wasn't down because of a frantic desire to pull something.

Our best bet may be to see what the speaking tour for the Swift Boat creeps is and look in those states.... Also in the swing states where they've been airing the ads?

235. swiftvets SCHEDULE (July 24 to Aug 30)--this is amazing!!!
I cannot believe that these creeps could put together a schedule like this, papering the whole country on the local outlets, without the coordination of a VERY sophisticated organization with an excellent network of contacts. Or, have they spent a lot of money on a PR firm? Oh yeah--there's that Merrie person. Does she get to look at the GOP rolodex? This looks like full saturation (I guess I'm naive, only knowing the few t.v. channels I have access to.)

N.B.--I found this by googling, but when I went to the main site earlier, I saw no way to get here. (But I'm not all that web-savvy.)

72. would it be out of line to check individual canadate's websites?
Edited on Sat Aug-21-04 11:15 PM by LastKnight
it might be alot of work but if we had people check thier state's canadates sites we might find something, then again, we might not. its unlikley to find things in thinking, but these guys are big GOP donors... so there might be a tie in here and there... in a few states where these guys live... who knows? just an idea. i know its an unreasonably large undertaking.

79. HOW TO SEARCH THE GOOGLE CACHE OF A PAGE:
Once you find a promising page, do a Google search of the page itself, eg: put www.pagop.org in the Google search box and hit search.

you will get a return of 1 hit and the option to Show Google Cache of the page.

Note: If you want to see the cache of a related page, you need to Google search THAT page (for example www.pagop.org/calendar.asp) and then look at the Google Cache.

228. Collier County had more...
They had an actual fundraising appeal for the Swift Vets, and a link to their newest ad. Skinner got a screen grab. I checked a little while later, and both the fundraising ask and ad link were gone.

See post #177 in this thread for screen caps.

Edited to add the following:

http://www.jacksongogop.com/ This is a link for Jackson Co. GOP main page. Links to news stories and to Swifties' Web site.

http://www.dmcgop.com/links.shtm Address for Des Moines County GOP Web site that in turns links to "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth."

134. So, the state sites keep themselves clean & let the counties roll in it.
Looks like the pattern is that the official state sites pretty much keep their noses clean, while many of the official county sites are up to their eyeballs in swiftboat smearers.

Having the official county GOP sites hawk the 527 organization's crap should be just as illegal, however. (I don't know how the exact law on this stands, though.)

If having a link to another site is a legal definition
of collusion, then Drudge is guilty of every crime there
is because he has links to almost everything. So is all
our local TV stations and newspaper web sites.

A better use of our time would be to search for telephone
records between white house or RNC and Swiftvets. I am sure
this can be obtained under the freedom of information act.
Just my 2 cents worth.

254. YES.. This one is very important.
This one has immediate and timely practical use. And could be documenting a serious violation of election laws in many states, the Federal laws and depending on how much covering up takes place, there could be several federal charges for hiding the evidence of wrongdoing.

Not to mention impeaching the credibility of the GOp and the Swiftboat Veterans for Bush in real life AND the media.

What's not to like about it?

I started a thread in my state Forum encouraging people to do so: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=141x2205

Maybe we should post in the other relevant state forums as well? And we can add local media contacts to the threads.

259. QUESTION:
Does posting an article about a claim made in the Unfit For Command book count?

I found this on the Paulding County, Georgia GOP site but I want to make sure it's enough:

http://www.pauldingrepublicans.org/

Kerry's 'Christmas in Cambodia'

...A new book, "Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry," by John O'Neill and Jerome R. Corsi, argues that Mr. Kerry was never in Cambodia, during Christmas 1968 or otherwise. To support their allegation, Messrs. O'Neill and Corsi highlight the denials of all living commanders in Mr. Kerry's chain of command that Mr. Kerry was in Cambodia, or was ever ordered into Cambodia....Also, the authors report that three out of Mr. Kerry's five-man Swift boat crew deny that they or their boat was in Cambodia during Christmas 1968 — the other two refused to comment.

Letter To Station Managers

ARLINGTON, VA -- Below is a letter that will be sent to the television station managers on Monday morning asking stations to set the record straight on the Kerry campaign's ad falsely accusing Bush-Cheney '04 of violating campaign finance laws.

Dear Station Manager:

Your station is being asked to run an ad from John Kerry's presidential campaign wrongly accusing Bush-Cheney '04 of violating the campaign finance laws. We ask that your station set the record straight.

It is completely false and without any evidence that the Bush "campaign supports a front group attacking John Kerry's military record," as the Kerry ad states. The Bush-Cheney campaign flatly rejects this baseless allegation of illegal coordination between Bush-Cheney '04 and a group called Swiftboat Veterans for Truth. The ad running on your station contains this false and libelous charge. Coordination with Swiftboat Veterans for Truth would be a violation of federal campaign finance laws. 11 C.F.R. 109.21.

Sadly, the Kerry campaign is using this falsehood for which it publicly admits it has no evidence to distract attention and gain free publicity. Attached is a verified transcript from a CNN interview in which Mr. Kerry's own spokesman, Tad Devine, could not present even one piece of hard evidence to back up the Kerry campaign's allegations.

The attached CNN Inside Politics verified transcript shows that Kerry campaign spokesman Devine is basing his charges solely on a newspaper article, "....it's in the New York Times today." However, not even this newspaper article presents evidence of "coordination." What has been reported are the Kerry campaign's unsubstantiated charges along with the explicit denial from the Bush-Cheney campaign. In fact, after inquiring about the alleged coordination reported in the New York Times story relied on by Mr. Devine, Wolf Blitzer, based on an earlier interview with a reporter who wrote the New York Times story, corrected Devine by stating, "They don't have any hard evidence backing it up." In other words, the allegation contained in the commercial runnin g on your station is based on nothing more than the Kerry campaign's false accusations, having them reported in the media, and then the Kerry campaign referring to the published false accusations as proof.

The Kerry campaign is hiding behind the law which does not permit your station to reject this false advertising by a candidate. But your station can insure that the record is clear in your total program. We ask that you to do that.

Respectfully,

Ken Mehlman
Campaign Manager

293. Well, they really aren't...
Asking them "not to run" the ad. They are saying "set the record straight" in "your total program". Which is bullshit, they don't have to do anything, or feel compelled to "explain" a campaign ad, but it isn't a "cease and desist" kind of letter, either.

303. What is going to be done with all the info? ( screenshots etc. )
There have been a couple small reports about GOP campaign websites linking to the swift boat liars for shrub. The only thing I heard was it would take direct information of money changing hands from Rove to these guys before anything could be done.

Has the Kerry campaign listed an end game to this info or is it a matter of letting the general public know about it in hopes of swaying their opinion?
