CNN Reporter says Repugs will win the Senate.. DU'er Pitt was correct
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 05:02 PM by KoKo01
Says the "uncontested" Dems running are strong and polls showing no "coat tail" effect with a Dem Presidential win.

What are these "key states" and why are these folks running "unchallenged?" The report was brief and we here on DU have been "slackers" in looking at our Dems who might be running and in focusing more effort on the Senate and House Races.

Here in NC I'm safe because we have strong Dems running, so I haven't paid much attention to the other states.

What states was CNN/Blitzer talking about who will have us lose the Senate. Without Dem Senate control...we will lose everything, even if Kerry is elected. AND...even if we gain "House" seats we have no hope because of the "numbers" of making a difference there.

The Senate is what we need to vote for Investigations. What's going on out there in YOUR states?

1. The Senate is the key if Kerry loses. If Kerry wins, then there is the
veto power of the President to stop the mudslide. Repubs do not have override numbers, and cannot pack the Supreme Court with Scalia's and Thomases.

2. Unfortunately, the reporter may be right, but we should still fight hard!!
We will very likely lose GA and SC but win IL. CO, OK, and FL are tough for us to win, too.

3. GA?
We don't have a Democratic senator there to begin with.

9. And with the bluedogs that will give them a 2/3 majority so
even if Kerry wins he will be overridden continuously.

6. We're leading in Colorado, Illinois and Alaska
plus NC. Competitive in Pennsylvania and Oklahoma. Florida and SC will be key.

7. Here's a cool senate calculator
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 05:13 PM by fujiyama
on the NYtimes site

Click on senate calculator and you can play around with it.

As of now it looks almost impossible for dems to win the senate or house back. Democrats would have to win every competetive race -- NC, CO, AK, OK, FL, LA (it may seem odd that two of these are very pro Bush states but there are good dems running in those states).

I don't see it happening. There seemed like there was some possibility of democrats holding on to SC, but recent polls show Tennenbaum losing even more ground.

GA is almost a lost cause. It's as likely a democrat will win that race as Keyes will win the Illinois senate race (OK it's not that bad but Majette doesn't have a very good chance).

I hope dems can hold on to LA, FL, and NC. Bowles is doing well in NC but the republican senate commitee is going to be putting more $ into that race.

CO and OK seemed very likely but CO has tightened up quite a bit. OK is a tough state considering it's so conservative and I hope Carson can win it.

Dems should hold onto CA and WA pretty easily. I hope Daschle keeps his seat. It's a close race but I'm pretty sure he'll pull it off. They will definetely pick up Illinois.

Hoefel isn't going anywhere in PA. His poll numbers don't look good. If he can beat Spector that'd be amazing. He's an institution in Pa though.

10. BUT...which states are we "down in?" NC is looking good for Bowles to
replace Edwards and I've got (thank goodness) good Dem House members that are running ahead in polls who are Dems.

I can't get rid of Liddy Dole until 2008 but she doesn't listen to me anyway...and I will have Erskine Bowles to counter her.

My district for House/Senate is looking good here in NC...I'm thinking that SC looks bad in that Tannenbaum replacing "War Horse Dem Earnest Hollings" is going to be tough. SC might very well lose us Hollings seat.

But this is my 2 state neck of the woods. What's going on where you are?

11. Kerry's strategy doesn't involve coattails
Edited on Fri Aug-20-04 06:37 PM by depakote_kid
He has in essense legitimized Republicans- and many of their policies- in order to appeal to the cross-over vote. I've been saying this for too long now to keep repeating it, so I'll only say that he will live to regret listening to the people who told him not to nationalize the election.

13. I hate being right
Actually, the House is better for investigations. All the Clinton investigation crap came from Dan Burton and his House committee of crap. The House is going to be a lot harder to win than the Senate, even under the best of circumstances, because of all the GOP redistricting and the scores of safe GOP seats in the South.

Gotta try, tho.
