PREDICTION: This Tax Scandal Will Ruin McCain
Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 12:00 AM by berni_mccoy
It's going to be all over the MSM come tomorrow.

There is simply no excuse for a U.S. Senator to FAIL to pay his property taxes for FOUR STRAIGHT YEARS, into such a default that the state is prepared to reclaim it in order to cover the costs.

McCain will not make it through the GOP Convention.

Ron Paul has his opening for a coup.

4. Sadly, I agree
The MSM needs to have a close election and they love McCain. If this were Obama, the press would be ripping into him as an "elitist".

27. Sadly, I also agree with you anonymous.
I am a very fair person, and have NOT bashed McCain if I thought he wasn't wrong. But this deserves to get some play on the main stream media. It would be blatant bias if it didn't. Sadly... we know how the media is. Very biased. :(

31. here's an exception: Al Franken
he had some problems with state taxes at various performance venues

another poster said a five point drop in the polls was directly related to that 'accounting error,' which was derided by the oppo. dunno the facts, but it makes sense that he relied on his accountant (who must've been very incompetent) to, gee, take care of things like keep track of all the places he earned money, and should have paid them

he's now getting it for writing nasty stuff in the past, and that appears to be more of a problem than the tax thing

meanwhile big tooth Norm has some sleazy housing arrangement in the DC area, and I don't know what sort of coverage it's getting in MN. my guess is it'll get more of a fair hearing there than if it were a national coverage issue, as the pres race is. local media usually does a better job of covering stories inimical to pugs, just because the local focus makes a story like that harder to 'disappear' than one that happens on the national landscape

I don't think you are lying. But do you have a link for that? That would make a big difference. If the bills went to the wrong house. True, you still have to pay your taxes, but it sheds some light on what may have gone wrong.

Reminds me of some relatives who predicted the Enron and Bush connection would lead to a huge scandal and his eventual impeachment. They were not counting on the fact the MSM will work overtime to explain away Republican scandals and then punch their time cards on the issue within three days.

McCain will will pay the taxes. Make a McLame excuse and editors will take it off rotation. Shelf life of three days.

If Obama were 45¢ short on his property tax, it would rate a 5 inch banner
headline in the Wall Street Journal and be on Fox Noise 24/7, but as it
is McCain, he could stab a relative to death with a rusty Bowie knife on
live television, and not have to worry about harsh commentary except on the
editorial page of the Boston Globe and a few blogs.

Let McCain make a fool of himself talking (or trying to) on TV a few times,
and he'll do himself far more damage than getting caught for tax evasion. Don't
forget--Republicans hate taxes to begin with. In their eyes, this only makes him
a hero.

Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 10:02 AM by starroute
I don't think playing it as a financial scandal will work -- but adding it in with not pumping his own gas and not knowing how to use a computer might.

The idea that McCain is so rich and so insulated that he isn't even *aware* of the things ordinary Americans struggle with, like paying their taxes or their fuel bills, is one that could easily take hold.

What would really be sweet -- though I don't expect it -- would be if someone could get a chance to ask him, in the sweetest possible manner, whether he struggles with housing costs like so many Americans and what he's doing to keep down the expenses on his seven homes.

On edit: I can see a regular comedy routine being developed:

"McCain is so out of touch ..."

"How out of touch is he?"

"He's so out of touch that (insert joke of your choice)."

(Audience laughter)

59. unfortunately, rules and laws are for democrats, not republicans.
when it comes to presidential politics, democrats must be geniuses, ordinary guys, successful businessmen, fresh outsiders, highly experienced insiders, honest to a fault, not naive, committed to an ideology (but not liberalism or socialism), pragmatic, capable of reaching across the aisle, strong in their convictions, not flip-floppy, and scandal-free with an extended family that's also scandal-free in every respect. heck, even their preachers must be non-controversial.

republicans, on the other hand, need to have an "(r)" after their name.

Pretty cheap for an ocean-front condo in La Jolla, unless it was purchased many, many years ago.

Just read the Newsweek piece. They rushed to Cindy's defense, basically saying that when you have as many responsibilities as she does, forgetting to pay your taxes can be easy. Of course, the drugs probably screw up your priorities too, but they left that part out. Imagine my surprise!

As the saying goes, this story has no legs. The MSM has already chalked it up to an "honest mistake," and they are praising John & Cindy for the fact that they are "making things right."

By the end of this week, the story will be gone without a trace.

The McCains keep their finances separate. They file taxes separately. The property was paid for through a trust, that didn't follow up properly. Its not like Cindy or her aunt were throwing the notices in the garbage. I highly doubt it was intentional, and bringing this up just gives the rethugs an excuse to attack Michelle. Aren't spouses off the table?

73. I doubt it, but it would be an interesting turn of affairs
Sadly, I don't think most Americans are really paying that much attention. :(

77. I disagree. It'll make him a hero to the so-called Libertarians and the Grover Norquists
of the world! Sadly, not only will the M$M ignore the story, they will pooh-pooh it as they have done with all of the McSame controversies. There is a long, long list of McSame gaffes and corruption that have been deliberately ignored by the media. We have to rely on the alternative media to push these stories and hope that they'll get some traction.

I find it odd that McSame and Grover are now "friends," when they once hated each other. But that's how the Pukes do. Unlike us Dems, they walk in lockstep and ensure that one of their own gets into office no matter how much they disagree with him on principle.
