Tennessee Rasmussen Poll: McCain 51% (-7), Obama 36% (+5)
Election 2008: Tennessee Presidential Election

Tennessee: McCain Ahead By Fifteen

Thursday, June 26, 2008

John McCain leads Barack Obama 51% to 36% in Tennessee, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in the state. Though McCain has a strong advantage, his lead has been cut nearly in half since April.

Two months ago, while Obama was still struggling to wrap up the Democratic Presidential Nomination, McCain led 58% to 31% in the Volunteer State. The current poll is the first conducted in the state since Hillary Clinton’s exit from the race.

McCain leads 61% to 29% among men, but the candidates are essentially even among women. McCain draws support from 87% of Republicans and holds a two-to-one advantage among unaffiliated voters. Obama is supported by 74% of Democrats.

The Republican nominee is viewed favorably by 60% of Tennessee voters and unfavorably by 37%. Those numbers are slightly less flattering than two months ago. Obama’s ratings are 42% favorable, 55% unfavorable. His ratings have improved marginally since April.

One in four Tennessee voters say they would be more willing to vote for Barack Obama if Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen was on the ticket. Twenty-nine percent (29%) said they would be less likely to vote for the Democrats. The Governor earns good or excellent ratings from 56% of Tennessee voters, while 17% think he is doing a poor job.

I do think McCain will win TN but I'm doing everything I can to help Obama. I keep hoping that one day Tennessee will turn BLUE. I see a lot of Obama bumper stickers but I have yet to see the first McCain sticker. That doesn't mean a whole lot though.

10. Harold Ford doesn't really fit the "mold" of a traditional Democrat though
as he is a GOP style corporate conservative.

9. I live in E. Tn. When I wore my Obama t-shirt to the store last week, I expected
to be heckled.. instead, all the young store clerks wanted to know where I got it, and one little old lady tapped me on the shoulder and said: "Do you work for that nice young man? When is he going to open an office here so I can get one of those shirts?"

I don't expect him to win here, but there are surprising pockets of support. It wouldn't surprise me to see Obama win every state in the USA except for TN, KY and W. Va.

despite how Republican it is.

6. I'm surprised I don't hear Bredesen mentioned as a potential VP more often.
Its nice to see the movement in poll numbers but I bet there are a couple of other Southern states where Obama has a better chance than TN.

8. How is it that Obama
only gets 74% of the Dem vote?

What's wrong with these "Dems"?

13. There are still conservative Dems in TN.
Most of the party establishment leadership is pretty moderate to conservative.
