How Obama Wins: Choose Gore as V.P.
Edited on Tue Jun-24-08 09:23 AM by Onlooker
After seeing a show about bees disappearing, reading about bats dying by the millions, and reading about floods, wildfires, and record temperatures, I think Obama should choose Gore as VP and make environmental issues one of the central themes of his campaign. It would put the Republicans on the defensive, especially since they failed miserably with global warming. It's an issue that appeals to a broad political spectrum, including religious folk and hunters (many of whom ant to protect our environment). It allows for all sorts of beautiful and patriotic ads. And it ties into such things as alternative energy and the oil crisis. It's also an issue that is a win-win issue. The worst risk about addressing global warming is: a cleaner earth and new technologies. The idea of developing new technologies could lead to the promise of another economic boom like that generated in the '90s as the internet came of age.

In choosing Gore, though, he also needs to address issues of terrorism and security. I think he should announce an advisory panel of some top names, like Wesley Clark. That would give Americans confidence, especially in the event that Bush provokes or initiates another war before the election.

Now, as far as Clinton goes, she should be the nominee to replace Justice Stevens who will surely retire if Obama gets elected. She'd be a great choice for Supreme Court Justice, and I think it's the kind of offer that would make her do all she can to get Obama elected.

1. ...um, ok, sure
But I can't imagine why big Al would want this, Been there, done that etc. He's now completely dedicated to the true passion of his life (besides Tipper!), and he's on a world-wide stage. He won't be able to do that as VP. Also, he can currently set his own agenda. He won't be able to do that as Veep. I love Al, but I don't see this happening.

2. Obama has a National Security team
The members are:
Senator Obama’s Senior Working Group on National Security:

* Secretary of State Madeleine Albright

* Senator David Boren, former Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence

* Secretary of State Warren Christopher

* Greg Craig, former director of the State Department Office of Policy Planning

* Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig

* Representative Lee Hamilton, former Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee

* Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder

* Dr. Tony Lake, former National Security Adviser

* Senator Sam Nunn, former Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

* Secretary of Defense William Perry

* Dr. Susan Rice, former Assistant Secretary of State

* Representative Tim Roemer, 9/11 Commissioner

* Jim Steinberg, former Deputy National Security Adviser

As for General Clark, I would not be surprised if he is Obama's VP pick

As for Senator Clinton being a Supreme Court Justice, I personally know two people far more qualified for the position.

3. It's been said before but worth repeating. If Al wanted to return to government he would have run
for president in 2008. He had 8 years as VP, I doubt he would want to be #2 again.

4. Not gonna happen.
First, because Gore will not do it. Second, because Gore would overshadow Obama.

5. I was standing 2 feet from Al Gore on May 31 when he said "forget it."
I'm pretty sure he meant it, too.

I'm for Wes Clark to be on the short list, and would be happy to
see him picked. To match THAT combination of military experience
and pure intellect, McCain would have to pick, well, Wes Clark!

6. Why should Gore do it?
He's a senior politician in every way to Obama. He's already been VP, and it's not exactly something most people want to do more than the necessary 8 years (unless you're actually controlling the president ala Cheney).

7. How Obama loses: gets publicly turned down by Gore.
He doesn't want to do it. There are a dozen statements to this effect. He is done with politics. Sorry.

and he can and will win anyway. You are a fool if you think otherwise; this is the most unpopular President since Richard Nixon, the most unpopular administration since Herbert Hoover's, the economy is tanking, the costs of food and fuel are skyrocketing, the US is involved in a hugely unpopular war; anyone who seriously thinks that these things add up to victory for the incumbent party, which is running a candidate who largely pledges to continue the policies of his failed predecessor, is an idiot.

9. Gore would not and should not accept if it were offered.
He can do far more good for the world without being tied down by someone else's politics and policies.

10. There's lots of ways Obama wins. Why, why would Al Gore ever want to be VP again?
Gore has found his calling in life and for his it totally transcends partisan politics. He has endorsed Obama, but I don't see Gore becoming immersed in the campaign. Evidently he has to make some kind of blood oath before people will accept he is not interested just in the same way last summer that some just would not believe that he was not going to run for president.

for that reason and the other reasons cited above, it will not be Al Gore.

15. Don't confuse why YOU like Gore for the position w/what PUBLIC reaction would be ...
I try to be very careful in distinguishing the two in advocating for CA Sen Barbara Boxer. The smart money is all saying he should pick someone as moderate as he can stand, but I say that he should try to appeal on bases OTHER THAN to the "middle" of an ideological spread.
