Rove picks the wrong metaphor to slam Obama

Rove picks the wrong metaphor to slam Obama

Posted June 23rd, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Karl Rove has made it clear on multiple occasions that he actively dislikes Barack Obama — if there’s a more helpful testament to the strength of Obama’s character, it doesn’t come to mind — and he continues to make his criticisms of the Democratic candidate more and more personal.

ABC News’ Christianne Klein reports that at a breakfast with Republican insiders at the Capitol Hill Club this morning, former White House senior aide Karl Rove referred to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as “coolly arrogant.”

“Even if you never met him, you know this guy,” Rove said, per Christianne Klein. “He’s the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by.”

Rove said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., “needs to come right at him.” He referred to the latest Newsweek poll showing Obama with a 15-point lead over McCain as nonsense, though he used a more scatological synonym. Rove said he was heading over to the White House for lunch and a chat with the President, Klein reports.

<...>

Of all the metaphors Rove could have used to attack the first credible African-American candidate for the presidency, he had to go with “the guy at the country club”? Seriously? Jake Tapper noted, accurately, that Obama “wouldn’t be admitted into many country clubs that members of the Capitol Hill Club frequent.”

Indeed, this is also surprisingly off-message for Rove.

For months, Rove has sought to characterize Obama as a dangerous outsider who we don’t really know and can’t trust. Everything about him, the argument goes, is “foreign.” The various far-right smears — about Obama’s religion, his family, his name, his patriotism — are all part of the same conservative frame.

Now, however, Obama’s part of the country-club set? Hanging around with a martini? If I’m not mistaken, Rove is talking about the ultimate insider — which is the opposite of the message Rove was emphasizing up until very recently. Can’t these guys pick one smear and go with it?

And finally, Greg Sargent notes the irony of Rove’s attack.

It should also be noted, of course, that Rove took a man who actually is a country club denizen who makes “snide comments” about others — that would be George W. Bush — and turned him into a regular Joe. Meanwhile, the guy who would struggle for admittance to some of these exclusive enclaves — Obama — is now “the guy at the country club.” Rovian up-is-downism at its finest.

Exactly. Rove’s description sounds spot-on like Bush — right down to the “snide comments” he makes about people who pass him by.

7. How could Rove be anything but jealous of Obama?
Rove is a frustrated cowardly bullying out-of-shape draft-dodging creep who vacations in the Dominican Republic with viagra, makes fun of little girls, and bought oxycontin from his maid while raving about "drug addicts" on his stupid show. Rove is contemptible in every possible way. He can't even get women to marry him for his money anymore.

Barack Obama, in contrast, is handsome, dignified, calm, thoughtful, intelligent, highly successful in both academic and political circles, looks great all the time, is still married to his gorgeous accomplished first wife, has two beautiful children who clearly adore him, and will be president of the United States of America.

I'm surprised that Rove is still breathing he must be gagging on envy and all the other deadly sins.

22. LOL! I just realized that I confused Rove with Rush! And it doesn't matter!
I'm cracking myself up. I genuinely thought it was stupid Rush who made this comment, and here it was stupid Rove. They're interchangeable anyway.

4. And I think there's less of that kind around anymore ...
I really think the majority of this country is TIRED OF NEGATIVE
POLITICS, and are especially turned off by RACIST POLITICS. Rove
may think he can use these tactics again this time out, but I
think he's in for a bit of a surprise.

We aren't all as prejudiced and nasty as you are, Pigboy ...
Welcome to the 21st century.

15. A request for clarification
"pigboy" is a reference to rove and not me??

I agree that the tactic will fail and hopefully fail miserably but racist tactics still will titillate a large segment of our population; those harmed the most by eight years of bush and rove.

they hid behind the genius of Rove as an excuse for their love affair with W (from the top I am sure) but Rove has shown himself to be not only not all that bright but rather a dub when it comes to ideas and tactics.

16. Sheryl Crow and Laurie David came up to him at the Washington Press
Club dinner to talk about Global Warming and were not cordially welcomed.

"In his attempt to dismiss us, Mr. Rove turned to head toward his table, but as soon as he did so, Sheryl reached out to touch his arm. Karl swung around and spat, "Don't touch me." How hardened and removed from reality must a person be to refuse to be touched by Sheryl Crow? Unfazed, Sheryl abruptly responded, "You can't speak to us like that, you work for us." Karl then quipped, "I don't work for you, I work for the American people." To which Sheryl promptly reminded him, "We are the American people."

Poor traitor rove can't get a handle on how to bring down Obama now that he couldn't keep bush up after his pols soared the day after they let 9/11 happen on their watch.

17. He could care less if he is liked or not, he said what he wanted to and believe it or not he got the
message across that he intended..how those that receive the message react is another story but I have found in all my years that human nature has not changed in ten thousand years and far too many continue to fall for the same bs they always have...

I wish the media would talk about what his obvious strategy was, they are not that stupid and if we have to hear their opinions on news instead of real news at least give the audience a bit more credit that though some are still easily manipulated by such style of reporting these days not all of us are and many of us can easily think for ourselves...

I wish they would just report the news..the texas news channel reports the news, granted, most of it is about the state but what I like about it is that they don't spend hours trying to influence the news they just report it as it is...

I might begin watching one of the other news stations when and if they return to real reporting and leave their opinions on the coat rack when they enter the building to being working...until then I myself will no longer intentionaly turn those channels on, my family does but I usualy exit the room if they choose to watch thier news given from such avenues that are nothing more than ripoffs of daytime talk shows like the view etc.....

25. I hope not but after reading quite a few of the responses to his statements it is more than obvious
that many did not get it and in not getting it right off the bat it leaves room for false speculation and then those he meant to touch with that comment do get touched but will be silent about how they feel....I would much rather underlying thoughts could more easily be expressed, at least than you know what your fixin to get hit with.

I could say that about Rove. He’s the fat, wide-assed guy at the Old Country Buffet with someone who could pass for his mom, holding a tray full of food overlapping the plates with a cigarette in his mouth blocking the way as he makes snide comments to the help about how he needs more potato casserole.

19. I think any attempts by Rove to pull this shit will fail miserably, because...
...Obama's campaign is so utterly outside what Rove knows, so beyond his usual Machiavellian intincts, that he's going to be rendered harmless this time around.

I just wonder how long it's going to take before Rove himself figures this out. And please, McCain, by ALL means keep this obsolete hyena on your payroll.

33. Rove -- what a loser.
No kidding, that's the wrong metaphor. Wasn't so long ago that the only way a guy like Obama could even set foot in some country clubs was to get a job as a caddy, a waiter, a groundskeeper or a men's room attendant. What's really eating at Rove is the fact that Obama is good-looking and elegant, and could fit in nicely as a James Bond-ish or Cary Grant-ish guy at some upper-crust location, while Rove and other bottom-feeders like him -- no matter what they do or how much money they have or how expensive their wardrobe is -- will always be the pasty, flabby guy who got repeated wedgies in middle school. But there's Obama, looking good, better than Karl ever could, and he's (get this) black. A black guy is cooler and more attractive than those pasty, flabby Republicans and Karl just can't stand it.

So what he's saying to them is, watch out for the uppity black guy because he looks better and classier than you do, and you don't want that.

42. Rove always bases his attacks on his candidate's own glaring weaknesses.
(Gore is a liar, Kerry's a coward blah blah blah etc) Amazingly it actually worked on some people.

There will be people who will still buy Rove's "Obama is an elitist insider country club type", but Rove's schtick is old century. Fewer and fewer people listen to Rove these days, and those that do don't believe him much anymore anyway.

I do think it's great that he keeps flapping his gums. Gives more folks a chance to get who he truly is.
And that goes for his separated-at-birth-twin Rush too.
