"My wife reminds me every day that I am not a perfect man, and I will not be a perfect President."
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 03:31 AM by FrenchieCat
"My wife reminds me every day that I am not a perfect man, and I will not be a perfect President. I may disappoint you sometimes, and we may not always agree. But what I will do is tell you things that you may not want to hear but that I think you need to know."--Barack Obama (from his standard stump speech that he gave consistently throughout the primaries).

Sorry Barack, but most people want to hear what they want to hear.

1. Telling people what they want to hear
is a large part of what has GOTTEN us into this mess to begin with.

I think his wife will make a wonderful First Lady.

3. Obama can just reserve the right to revisit the issue if he is elected
I think people are making a big deal about nothing with the FISA immunity.

4. BINGO!
As always, people pick the most absurd reasons when it comes to why they will vote for one candidate. If you don't believe me try door to door canvasing or phone banking for a candidate.

The reasons people use is astounding.

5. I guess it is no big deal about his latest ad that is appearing 24/7
in which he touts welfare-to work programs that HE passed (not help to pass). Same kind of welfare reform that he and other blacks criticized Bill Clinton for. And it must not be a big deal that only his white mother and grandparents appear in the ad and both Michelle and his paternal grandmother are not shown. But then, this ad is meant to be shown in the states where the GOP has strongholds. I guess you don't call that "saying what people want to hear." To me, this ad is just as racist as any put out by the GOP in previous elections...it uses all the code words and touches on all the code issues. I guess blacks give him a pass on this too. Wonder why Dyson and West have not criticized this ad as they would have done had it been a Hillary ad?

6. Are you serious?!?
Breathe Geraldine, breathe.

A couple of points:

1. Do you have a link to that ad? Surely you aren't blasting that wonderful ad that he just put out, right?

2. His mother and his grandparents raised him. Michelle's grandparents didn't raise him. He was re-introducing himself to the American people, describing how he was raised. Next time play the commercial with the sound up so you can follow the storyline in it.

3. I'm a black man and I don't need to give him a pass on this because there's nothing wrong with the ad. If he keeps putting out ads like this one, he will just stroll into the White House.

4. This has nothing to do with Hillary. In fact, she's already endorsed Obama and conceded the Dem primary to him. Please follow her lead.

27. I completely agree with you
about both the ad (If it is the same ad to which the poster is referring), and the fact that the post is absolutely uncalled for.

Just one little correction....The poster did not refer to Michelle's grandparents at all. She referred to HIS paternal grandparents. Don't ask me why...I have simply assumed that they haven't been in the picture any more than his father was. :hi:

31. Thanks for the clarification
and I have no problems with Hillary supporters making sensible posts like yours (we're all Democrats first), but that other poster has jumped off the deep end. I think that Obama met his paternal grandmother for the first time a couple years ago when he visited Kenya. So there's no surprise that they're not in the commercial because she didn't raise him.

37. Here's the ad..
http://www.barackobama.com/index.php

And why is that post allowed to stay..it's against the rules to tear down our candidate and call his ad "racist". We're not still fighting the Primaries.

7. Wow - you're really stretching to find reasons not to like the guy...
In red states just being black and saying you're running for president is telling them what they don't want to hear.

Not all blacks are against welfare to work programs. :eyes: And blacks are savvy enough to understand which type of ads may be needed in red states. Thanks for your concern.

22. Your post is filled with
Racially tinged comments that aren't required from a Democrat on Democratic Underground who supports our Democratic nominee.

The primaries are over, and you need to understand that and stop crying about Hillary....who has nothing to do with this op whatsoever.

36. You're breaking the rules...

"Constructive criticism of Democrats or the Democratic Party is permitted. When doing so, please keep in mind that most of our members come to this website in order to get a break from the constant attacks in the media against our candidates and our values. Highly inflammatory or divisive attacks that echo the tone or substance of our political opponents are not welcome here.

You are not permitted to use this message board to work for the defeat of the Democratic Party nominee for any political office. If you wish to work for the defeat of any Democratic candidate in any General Election, then you are welcome to use someone else's bandwidth on some other website.

That pretty much covers everything you need to know...

* Constructive criticism of Democrats or the Democratic Party: Permitted.
* Highly inflammatory or divisive attacks against Democrats: Not permitted.
* Using this message board to work for the defeat of any Democratic Party nominee for any political office: Not permitted.

If you follow those rules, you'll be just fine. If you try to find a way around those rules, you take your chances with the moderators. It's that simple."

11. What I hear is a man who has his ego in check
and looks at himself realistically--Obama knows he doesn't have "all the answers" and that it's "my way or the highway", which is rather refreshing after the 7 1/2 hears of hubris and ego that we've had. I read into this someone who is willing to listen to other's ideas and to try and come up with a solution; one who will be flexible in that he would be willing to change from a failed policy to something new.
