Reasons my Uncle does not want Obama to be President.
-He will take orders from the "blacks".
-If he is shot African Americans will riot.
-He is a Muslim.
-He is weird.

We had another argument today. I don't know why we talk politics.

Asking what party his uncle belongs to? No really. I'd like you to explain how that's an inflammatory question.

b/c it's obviously not an inflammatory question, and you're oversensitive.

...or is there some unspoken rule that we can't ask the party affiliation of charle's uncle? If so, no one told me.

2. oh brother.
I have one of those in my family; he's unfortunately suffering from early Alzheimer's and the most we can do is make sure he has easy access to his "nervous pills" (Valium and painkillers).

I don't think it's within anyone's right to deny his vote, but would it be really REALLY bad if we just refused to drive him? I know, that's really evil, but I shudder to give McCain another vote coming from a less than sound mind.

Sigh, the trials of family. Hang in there!

You know bigotry... relegating an entire group of people to second-class status because of the perceived actions of a handful.

19. Tell him that McCain is the Manchurian candidate.....
and that in his 5 years of captivity in Vietnam, he was indoctrinated in the ways of communism...which is why he acts like a Democrat sometimes, but not since he's been running. Tell him McCain is trying to fool people into voting for him. Also tell him that this is why he divorced his wife almost as soon as he came back from Vietnam, because she would have recognized that he wasn't the same person anymore. Also tell him that McCain committed adultery with the current wife that he has, and because she's a heiress, when he finally was allowed to marry her, he had to sign a prenupt. He was too weak to negotiate her consent to marry him without it. Oh...and don't forget to mention that he wasn't even born in the United States, and people are not so sure that his father was his father, and on photographs he doesn't really look like his father at all.

That should put some doubts in his mind.

14. Know your audience...

When confronted with arguments like that, logic is the last thing you want to resort to.

Instead, respond with points like these:

-But McCain is an Irish name. Do you want a President who's drunk all the time?
-If he gets sick or dies, how many people might get hurt in the celebration when they hold his wake?
-He can't be a real Catholic... They don't believe in divorce. Who knows what religion he might have sworn into during his stint at the Hanoi Hilton?
-He looks like a child molester I saw in an FBI poster at the Post Office.

27. I am old enough that I remember a neighbor, my best friend's mother
who had similar concerns in the early 1960s - that Kennedy would:

- take orders from the Pope
- that he was a Catholic and that was weird (Not surprising - as a young Catholic, that hurt me)
- He didn't talk like an "American" and sounded British (???? - I was only 10 and I knew the difference between England and New England)

This was NOT the deep South or a KKK area, this was Northern Indiana in a town where Catholics were (I think) about half the population.
JFK went on to be a very loved President.

If Obama wins, people will come to really know him and his family and they will be shown in a more positive light. If you go to a library and look at things like the "Parade" newspaper supplement or women's magazines like "Good Housekeeping" this happened even with the Clintons. (even used, not to say they didn't deserve good treatment, but because the fact that they did have a period of this. I was surprised to find a December 1992 profile in a Parenting magazine found when cleaning out a closet where I had a pile of 1990s vintage magazines that were saved more because they were not thrown away than due to merit. They had a 2 page profile of HRC that was incredibly positive about her as a role model to girls.)

I strongly believe that this would have happened with the Gores and Kerrys as well. In the case of all three families, the Republicans to various degrees had painted good people as "strange" - in fact, all have incredible families who would be seen more clearly as President.

29. There are some family members I won't argue with UNLESS they have made me lose my temper
As an AA, of course I'd be offended but I've met some older white people who are trying to be nice and have said more offensive things than that.

I'd say love him with the fiercest kind of commitment you can have. You can detest his beliefs all you want. People don't change ingrained beliefs they've had for 3/4 of a century. They hide them in mixed company and say it is those damned blank euphemism racial slur epithet.

Every one of the worst stereotypes will come to mind every time you attempt to mention BHO's name. Instead talk him about shared values, ask him if BHO is human and manages to do all the agreed upon points what is the worst within reason (some people are scared that somehow Obama is going to revisit every grievance AAs have had for the last 5 going on 6 centuries) that can happen.

I think you have to talk about these irrational fears because when Obama is elected there will really be some weeping and a gnashing of teeth if these haters are not properly prepared. If he wants death to gays, then I can't believe AAs hanging from trees are far behind.

he will feel better once he comes out of the closet. Then you can ask him, well ok, you hate the blacks, now about Obama, he is a fine upstanding American, don't you think that the republican party has made an enormous corrupt mess of things and it is time for a change?

If that is the meme, it's not a bad thing, necessarily. If they see it in their interests to keep him safe, then, good!

The rest of it? I have a repub. uncle too, and he is an amazing person who was Fox brainwashed with fear fear fear and the testosterone based alpha wiring in his brain has adapted to accept that view. I love him and respect him, except for this. We both know that blood is thicker than politics. But then I have a small family. I can't spare one uncle.

On Thanksgiving before the Iraq war he said to me,
