Are younger voters just more prone to being Democrats?
Does anyone know if younger people have traditionally leaned toward the Democratic Party over the past few decades or if the past couple of years are an anomaly in favor of the Democratic Party? I find this interesting, because if this keeps up then the Republicans might be on their heels big time for the next couple of decades or so. Or perhaps do young people traditionally change to Republicans as they get older? If that's the case, then we need to find what issues make them change their party affiliation as they get older. Solve this problem and the Republican Party might become a thing of the past. Serious discussion is very welcome. :patriot: Snarkiness is too.

1. Most people stick with the political party of their youth.
Of course, there are prominent exceptions (Ronald Reagan, Tony Snow, etc.)

3. So do you think that the current Dem youth movement
spells serious trouble for Republicans in the coming decades, or will they be able to snatch back some of them later on?

5. yes I do think it is trouble for repukes

I think the corporate news propaganda is much less effective:

1) on people as technically savvy as our young ones, who are much more able and willing to find alternative news sources

and

2) the young can see what effect repuke policies is having on not only them, but what it has done to the lives of their parents, grandparents, etc. along with the environment, etc.

Yup I think the repukes are running scared and that their time of being able to steal elections may be over soon too

4. Reagan carried the 18-29 year old vote in 1984
And I believe in 1980 as well. I don't have time to find the exit polls.

7. The party of rich old white men in suits is not going to win young hearts and minds.
There are still some differences between the major parties, and I don't doubt that this is reflected in their ability to win youth support.

8. Here is something recent on this, hokies
Pew Poll

Compare to 1992

Back then, the young were a contested, and closely split, bloc. Now they’re overwhelmingly Democratic. Dems had their biggest advantage among folks around age 60, and did worst with voters in their 30s. Now, the Democratic advantage runs straight through the electorate and is most sharply pronounced among young voters.

9. Haha, CNN just ran a piece advocating McCain as The Choice for college students
Edited on Mon Jun-23-08 08:50 AM by ErinBerin84
And launched a fucking defense of McCain's shitty votes last year regarding student loans. So transparent, CNN. They've got to work on their subtlety a bit more.
