Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 09:27 PM by FrenchieCat
Also call your 2 Senators and Senator Obama, and request that they vote to remove the Immunity clause from the FISA Bill, and if they can't, to vote NO on such bill.

If you are actually interested in "doing something" to save the 4th amemdment, Barack Obama can't do that by himself, which is why you need to call Sen. Reid and your Senators (even if they are Republicans).

Pressuring only Senator Obama ain't gonna do jack shit other than to force him to vote on a losing bill. If you are only testing Barack Obama, then simply call his campaign and write, etc...but don't pretend to really care so much for the actual issue of FISA and Immunity for the Telecoms.

1. How about Obama just vote the right way instead?
Wouldn't that be the better thing to do?

4. Why? That's not gonna help the bill not pass.
Are you interested in the Bill, or testing Obama.

Oh...no, please don't answer that.

I already know what you are interested in...

How about all her DLC buddies?

Don't make this about Obama. Bottom line is that EVERY Democrat should be voting against this shit. No excuses.

25. That one vote alone won't stop this bill. Which do you prefer?
Stopping the bill or complaining about Obama? Which is your real motive?

30. Can someone give me an eloquent verbal message for Reid?
His voicemail is full, so I may have to talk to a live person on the other end of the line and I suck at it.

Here are my two main points, but if someoner could help me finesse it to sound more eloquent that would be great:

- I so hate the path FISA has taken, and I wholeheartedly disagree with allowing retroactive immunity to telecom's. We all know that unwarranted surveillance has happended since 9-11.

- What checks and balances does the bill that the HoR's passed include to ensure that surveillance won't be abused?

If the second question cannot be concretely answered, this bill shouldn't go anywhere. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

31. You are asking him to keep it from coming for a vote......
until after the elections....basically.

And that you are stressing under no circumstances should there be immunity for the telecoms and their past actions granted.

2. And Dick Durbin too (the Dem Whip). By my count this is where I think we stand:
Likely NOs:

Akaka (D-HI)
Biden (D-DE)
Bingaman (D-NM)
Boxer (D-CA)
Brown (D-OH)
Byrd (D-WV)
Cantwell (D-WA)
Cardin (D-MD)
Clinton (D-NY)
Dodd (D-CT)
Dorgan (D-ND)
Durbin (D-IL)
Feingold (D-WI)
Harkin (D-IA)
Kennedy (D-MA)
Kerry (D-MA)
Klobuchar (D-MN)
Lautenberg (D-NJ)
Leahy (D-VT)
Levin (D-MI)
Menendez (D-NJ)
Murray (D-WA)
Obama (D-IL)
Reed (D-RI)
Reid (D-NV)
Sanders (I-VT)
Schumer (D-NY)
Stabenow (D-MI)
Tester (D-MT)
Wyden (D-OR)

That's 30.

So we need to twist 11 arms if this bill is brought to the floor. Here are my suggestions:

Baucus (D-MT)
Casey (D-PA)
Collins (R-ME) - up for reelection; polling shows the Dem candidate closing in on her; might get Chaffee'd
Kohl (D-WI)
Hagel (R-NE) - retiring; he can afford to vote his conscience
Landrieu (D-LA) - up for reelection
McCaskill (D-MO) - not up for reelection; can support filibuster without losing much political capital in her conservative state
Mikulski (D-MD)
Specter (R-PA)
Sununu (R-NH) - up for reelection; trailing Dem badly
Webb (D-VA)
Whitehouse (D-RI)

13. Weird. And there I though it was about peserving the 4th Amendment!
I'm just a silly rabbit.

Obama doesn't need to be protected, he needs to be elected.

Now, I realize that you have yet to voice your support for him.....and so I understand your mentality.

For you it isn't the issue so much, but more about the Nominee.

In other words, you don't really care about FISA. Right?

Is it more important to stop this bill or to have something on Obama to complain about?

12. Well, when Move On only calls that we pressure Barack Obama and
not the Democratic Leader of the Senate, I get a bit irritated. I contacted Obama's campaign last week and put my letter in.

But I also wrote to Sen. Reid, and Sen. Feinstein (Boxer will vote no).

So since Move On missed the beat, I'm stepping in.

The point is not so much to test Barack, it should be to stop this bill. Obama can vote no all day long and we will be no better off, except for now, the GOP can attack Obama on his vote.

The point is either the Policy issue at hand or nothing.

Obama doesn't need to be tested, he needs to be elected.

He won't do it. This isn't "his issue".

And I believe his office has already signaled that he WON'T oppose this so-called "compromise".

Still, here's to hoping.

27. I don't think Senator should be written off,
Edited on Sun Jun-22-08 10:35 PM by FrenchieCat
Similarily, I don't think that Obama should be written off either.

But I know that if it is the bill that people truly care about, contacting Reid is more effective, because he, by himself, can keep the bill from coming to the floor. And so, if Reid doesn't hear from anyone, then he will be operating from a point of strength in supporting this compromise bill.

Obama on the other hand could vote "NO" all day, and the bill would still pass.

So if folks want to deal with "Principle" to do the right thing, they should also be doing the right thing, and actually trying to get this bill defeated, instead of only trying to test Barack Obama.

29. But NOT bringing it to a vote would be HUGE
The GOP is already crowing about how much Friday's vote EXCEEDED their expectations.

The media knives would be unsheathed in a millisecond if this were to happen.

And we all know what the headlines would be.

I had thought it best to let Obama handle this as he sees fit. My thinking is that he has a lot more info on this than we do; and if we're going to trust him to be our pres, then we should be able to trust him with doing the right thing on this. He knows the Constitution better than most of us, and I do believe he will uphold it! But it won't hurt to ask. He did say he was opposed to the immunity clause.

edited to say, thanks for all the contact info.

Got humans at Reid's and Durbin's offices. Left voicemail at Obama's. Reid's staffer "noted" my opinion, and barely restrained herself from saying "cha!" when I suggested he keep the vote from coming up. Durbin's staffer wasn't sure of his stance on this bill, but said he was strongly opposed to the version that came up last year. And of course, was just able to leave a message on Obama's phone.

57. E-mailed Reid and my senators just now.
I will call them tomorrow. Thanks. I am tired of keeping powder dry when what we need to do is keep all their feet to the fire. Tactically, I think that in the event that Reid let's it come up ( which he will, and for the life of me I can't figure out why), Obama ( as the nominee) and Dodd, Clinton and Biden ( as the former candidates) and Feingold ( as, well, Feingold)along with some of the the elders should start herding cats. Hell, I would like to see the first presidential debate take place on the floor of the Senate with Obama kicking McCain's ass on the issue from here to Halifax.

I honestly believe that opposing this bill ( even if they lose) is a win for the Democrats. You are right Obama can't do it alone, but he can provide leadership. There might be more Republicans who are looking for cover in the next election. Thanks for the list.
