Okay, this is just dumb.
My cousin in law has been on the frontlines in sending me RW anti-Obama email crap. I send her the debunking. Today she sent me the real reason she won't consider voting for Obama. He doesn't know how many states there are. He said there were 57 states and she said that just proves how stupid he is.

I hardly remember this coming up on the radar. I sort of remember him saying something about traveling to all 57 states but wasn't it a joke? Is this really a RW talking point? I know my CIL is not the brightest bulb on the planet but to honestly believe that Obama really thinks there are 57 states is sort of mind boggling?

How would you respond? I'm leaning toward smart ass.

2. He said 57 contests or something like that
Not 57 states. Does this dumbshit think that Obama doesn't know how many states are in the Union? Hell, even * knows that!

8. I thought he said "states," but it was pretty clear in the context that
he was referring to the number of primary contests. Slip of the tongue, nothing else.

He made a slip of the tongue and said "states". Ask her how she feels about McCain saying it's not important when the troops come home.

5. He did say something about 57 states but I don't know the context in which he said it.
Of course the rightwing hate-radio is attempting to exploit it but any fool can realize he either made a joke or made an honest mistake.

I hardly think ANY reasonable person thinks the Barack doesn't know how many states there are in this 'distressed' Union...

6. Contests - If you consider "states" and caucuses -- adds up to many more than 50
Consider that Texas alone had BOTH a primary and a caucus.

Yes. Barack knows how many states are in the union.

7. He confused the number of contests and the number of states
Late at night, in the middle of the campaign. He said 57 states, in a slip of the tongue he didn't even catch. I saw the video. He looked exhausted.

9. How about simply responding "you are an idiot, la la la la la la la...."
Nothing is going to change her mind. My dad has sent back e/mails to longtime repuke friends who mail this garbage out asking them not to dump their trash into his e/mail inbox. They get offended of course, but thats just the way it is. Better to be up front and honest with these flat-earth morons. (morans for those of the reich wing reading this).

14. Yes, just a simple misspeak
When every word you utter is recorded, and you spend 18 hours a day speaking, little errors will be made. Nobody is immune.

13. He just misspoke. He meant 47.
This is a Hannity talking point.

If you read the quote in full context, it's easy to see what he meant.

"It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

LATER:

At a later stop Obama was talking with reporters and expressed concern he'd also mis-stated the number of potential cyclone victims in Burma. He said, ""I hope I said 100,000 people the first time instead of 100 million. I understand I said there were 57 states today. It's a sign that my numeracy is getting a little, uh."

---

These people who run with this crap are the same people who have been forgiving George Bush all his verbal gaffes for eight solid fucking years. You know, the guy who knows how hard it is to put food on your family, who wonders, Is our children learning?, who says that gynecologists aren't free to practice their love with their patients, and a million other examples of Bush's tortured nukular syntax and enough Freudian slips to render himself the subject of best-selling books entirely devoted to his speshul language strategery.

If that's all they have, I'd say that makes them pathetic morans.

20. The collective conscience of DU (this phenomenon happens all the time)
I was talking to Mr Zola earlier today after he had visited his mother. He told me how he debunked for her some of the rw smears/talking points that are being circulated about Obama. I then suggested to DH that he point out that there is a larger issue that people who continue to buy into these smears are dealing with, that just debunking each individual smear will never be enough for these people.

The truth is that these people need to be confronted (by someone close) that the real problem is the thought process that would allow them to continue to buy into such odious smears, rumors, and lies. There's a deeper issue for these people that they will not examine unless they are challenged by someone who loves them. It is a process, mere debunking of the smears--no matter how often you do it--will not be good enough for them.

I know.

22. I think you've hit on something
I don't know my CIL all that well. We sort of reconnected because of email a few years back. She sends me jokes mostly but also passes on these RW screed and seems to buy into them.

I think she and her friends just send this stuff back and forth to reinforce their petty beliefs. I am pretty much done with her.

21. And she would use this as an excuse to vote for a dodo like McBush?
Even had Obama truly made this tiny factual error, how does that stack up against the idiocies that McBushie utters in even one day? Tell her that she should at least admit the truew reason she won't vote for Obama and quit looking for stuff to hide behind. Makes her look like a coward.

26. that is what I recall
He said 57 states, and chuckled as soon as it came out, knowing his error - he meant to say 47 States, not counting Alaska and Hawaii.

And for the smart ass reply, tell your CIL that Obama misspoke at the end of a long day. Bush misspeaks almost daily, hence the Letterman - Great Moments in Presidential Speeches.

What does that say about the fucktards that voted for him TWICE! Once is forgivable, (barely since you had 4 years of his father) twice makes you a dumb shit and a unpatriotic American!

p.s. I love using the unpatriotic American line. It pisses people off! Then you can tell them how much you disliked it when Bush and all his followers branded you with that even though they were proven wrong. It is a game over moment for the conversation. The 28%ers remain pissed, those who use critical thinking get it.

24. Yes, go for smart ass. Has she never made a slip of the tongue?
Is she really stupid enough to think Obama really believes there are 57 states? She's hiding something. That's not the real reason she's against Obama. Tell her to try again and try telling the truth this time. What is the REAL reason she is against him? Because she likes endless war and a failing economy - except for the Oil Companies?
