Summary of Dean's appearance in London today at Imperial College. Pictures also.
From a blogger named mizzykitty in London.

Governor Howard Dean in London

I was asked by a couple people to post a summary of this event, so here we go, Gov. Howard Dean speaking at Imperial College in London.

He was such a charismatic speaker. The lecture theater was just jam-packed with people, and the energy in the room was electric. Dean looked great too, very tan and fit. I sat in the 3rd row, right in the middle,so it kind of felt like he was talking right at me!

A portion of the summary:

3. Voter turnout

*The under 35's are a new generation of Americans who truly see themselves as multicultural, and who share a common culture regardless of race, gender, class, etc.

*This generation looks at Democratic candidates like Obama and Clinton and say yeah, in 20 years, that could be me. Whereas they look at the Republican candidates, and it's like these guys are from another era or something.

*Republicans have a great top-down command structure which allows them to consolidate their party into a strong unit. However, for people under 35, unless they've been in the military or something, this type of command structure is alien to them. Hence, Republicans don't know how people today think.

4. Closing

The biggest mistake politicians make is try to hold on to power instead of doing what's right. If you do what's right for America, you don't have to worry about holding on to power because you'll have the American people behind you.

3. More from another blogger about Dean's mention of voting files..
they have developed.

http://obamalondon.blogspot.com:80/2008/06/howard-dean-addresses-democrats-abroad.html

"He also talked about our now fully up and running voter database that is able to target voters with detailed consumer information, and an amazing GPS system that the Obama campaign has now adopted from the DNC, that identifies target addresses in the immediate neighborhood of a potential volunteer so that our activists can maximise their effectiveness in their local communities."

9. That database is what most terrified me about a Clinton candidacy
I've gotten to rely on it a lot, and Penn would have flushed it down the toilet.

15. I think she was mostly using Catalist....Ickes file he built up
because he did not trust Dean. Obama used the DNC one mostly, and added names to the file as he used them.

17. That last part is really critical
We don't register by party in WA State, therefore we have, therefore we have the categories N (no data on the voter at all) and U (unknown; some data, but not enough to assign affiliation). With the last rebuild, our N and U designated voters dropped quite a bit.

12. If I remember correctly...
he had a blue tie with whales on it, I think his mother had given it to him. He lost it. Some of the Deaniacs overheard him talk about it, and they searched around and found a new one for him. He was so happy he sent them a nice letter. I think I have it somewhere.

10. Daily Kos diary about his London appearance. Nice write-up
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/6/22/165531/320/732/540330

"He talked about the risks of a party getting into power, as the politicians then become obsessed with staying in power. Dr. Dean spoke from the heart and promised if elected officials do what's right, then they don't ever have to worry about staying in office. To paraphrase: If we win the election, and the Democrats do what's right, then the American people will lend us their power for another four years."

"The other big reason is how beautifully he puts the dots together to form new idears. Dr. Dean told us how, while musing on the under 35 vote, it struck him that unless they work in a military type system (army, police et al), younger people aren't used to the top down command and control organization favored by the Republicans. So not only do the Republicans not look like this generation, who identifies as multi-cultural, they can't think like them either."

Aww...the diarist links to this page from 2003...when we made our own ads as Deaniacs.

18. Write-up from the Guardian...
Must have been a low key affair.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jun/23/uselections2008.barackobama

"We turned up in droves and stood in disorderly queues and spoke in loud voices. Many came with children in tow and wearing T-shirts bearing the insignias of American sports teams and advertising their belief that Texas should not be messed with.

Imperial College, London, was a slightly surprising place for the chairman of the Democratic National Committee to turn up on Sunday only days after his party had begun the frantic scramble to cope with the fallout from Obama's decision to refuse public funds. But Howard Dean fulfilled his promise to turn up to address the members of Democrats Abroad UK, despite what might have been some rather more pressing concerns.

Statesmanlike, Dean avoided saying anything controversial, besides remarking that "I think the Republican brand is incompetence and corruption, myself", to much applause. It was essentially a fundraising junket, with the now-classic rhetoric – "If you can't heal the party, you're not going to heal America" – but the enthusiasm was palpable. I felt incredibly inspired. It was unsettling.

Unsettling, because it's been a long time since American politics has inspired me."

19. When Howard speaks, it is rarely a low-key affair
And that goes for whether he is speaking to a large crowd or just on the phone, man to man.

22. For all the times Howard has been over here, his schedule and mine never coincided
I have "just missed" him in so many cities over here, they sound like one
of those "all included" tours of Europe. "DFW just barely missed meeting
Howard Dean here" plaques in every major city in Europe, collect 'em all!
Ten day tours, just $999 (plus $1.5 million kerosene surcharge).

I don't get up to London much anyway (who needs an American who speaks nine
languages in a country where they speak English?).

I only saw Howard in New York 3 weeks ago because that particular occasion was
the day after my daughter's college graduation, and the day before we had to
get back to Germany.
