Study: North Carolina Triad has lost 30,000 Jobs in Four Years
http://www.wfmynews2.com/news/news.asp?ID=31167Greensboro

A United Way study of the state of our community shows some staggering statistics in the Triad.
For starters, the Triad has lost nearly 30,000 jobs in just four years.

Laid off manufacturing workers are making roughly 50% less in their new jobs and job growth in the Triad is 4% below the national average.

"I did qualify for unemployment insurance, but that runs out in a week and I've still not been able to find work," laid off textile employee Monique McCullough said.

The study also highlights information about housing costs, drug and alcohol abuse among teens, and child abuse.

1. More layoffs tomorrow in Catawba County
at a furniture manufacturer in Maiden. We're new to this area; moved down from NY in February. Beautiful place, but sad. So little opportunity. But, HELP IS ON THE WAY! Wish I had a car so I could go see JF Kerry in Charlotte tomorrow. He's going to be a great President, and John Edwards is wonderful, too.

2. Do you think Kerry will stop the flow of jobs overseas?
You know that is where these jobs are going.

3. charlotte just took a hit with banking job losses too.
parts of high point are a ghost town with the furniture manufacturing going off shore, hickory has been hit hard too, and don't even talk about randolph county with 15% unemployment due to pilotex shutting down.

in addition to reduced salaries, the newer jobs in non-manufacturing have reduced benefits.

i was talking today with a chemical company sales manager in south carolina who services the textiles and non-wovens market, he said "damn i have always been a conservative, but spending $87 Billion on iraq? for what?" i asked if he saw 911 yet. he hadn't and i told him it would open his eyes about what is going on.

this is a white middle aged conservative businessman, god and country type, but the economy is looking so bad to him that he wont be a conservative much more. the "christian values" issues will melt away as the economy this guy built his career upon is swept away.

the guy told me he voted for bush in 2000 but wont this november. and this is south carolina.

5. That's Weird.

Only reason I say that is because the Research Triangle is growing like crazy, so how is it doing that with all the job loses? I mean, everytime I'm in the Raleigh area there's a new development going up that wasn't there last week. And they all can't be retirees. In fact, I doubt 10% of them are. What's up with this? Just wondering.

BTW, I can't get the link to work, so I'm just going off what you posted.
