The challenges facing Sen. Barack Obama as he tries to woo supporters of former rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton could pale in comparison with Sen. John McCain's troubles with women voters - if the voices of a growing number of prominent Republican women are any indication.

"I cannot see a more counterproductive candidate for women," said Jillian Manus-Salzman, a leading California Republican activist and generous GOP donor in the nation's most populous state, an ATM for presidential campaigns. "I cannot vote for McCain."

Susan Eisenhower - granddaughter of the late GOP president Dwight Eisenhower and a Washington D.C.-based expert on foreign policy and national security issues - said today she is backing Obama over McCain because the Democrat shown more understanding of how the Iraq war, the economy, and other key issues affect their daily lives.

And Harriet Stinson, the 82-year-old founder of Bay Area-based Republicans for Choice, said that - after 60 years of Republican registration - she has finally re-registered as a Democrat.

"I couldn't take it anymore," she said, arguing that on issues like funding birth control and supporting sex education, McCain "couldn't be worse."

2. how about his son ? his son endorsed Kerry in 2004
i'm assuming he is the father of Susan so probably backing Obama also.

it would be a good idea to get it out to people that they are backing Obama. show people the Republicans of Ikes day have been alienated from the party in recent years.

3. I love this! Obama has Ms. Eisenhower doing some talking for him. Great!
And 82 year old Harrient Stinson said a mouthful! "I couldn't take it anymore," she said, arguing that on issues like funding birth control and supporting sex education, McCain "couldn't be worse." Now, that straight talk!

4. I guess the media will have to go back to hand-wringing over working class whites
And of course they are all middle aged Catholic men in Scranton, Pennsylvania with names like Frankie and Tommy.

7. Yea he was so liberal that he overthrew the democratic elected government of Iran
Don't get me wrong, Ike is far better than today's GOP. But he was not liberal by any means.

8. 91% Top Tax Bracket
All told, the rich paid 50% taxes under Ike, vs. 17% today.

Ike was certainly not perfect - but by today's standards, he was pretty far left.

11. It was a different mindset pre-Reagan
The mentality of Ike's time was pretty far left compared to today (at least on economic issues), not so much Ike himself. If he had been in office post-Reagan the tax rates would have been much much lower. Ike also wanted to lower taxes somewhat but didn't believe he had the political support to do it.

And as I said his foreign policy was hardly liberal. Ike is better than today's Republicans but I would hesitate to call him a liberal.
