Schwarzenegger Opposes Offshore Oil Drilling
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Wednesday he opposes lifting a ban on new oil drilling in coastal waters, breaking with President Bush and Republican presidential candidate John McCain.

He called California's coastline "an international treasure" that must be protected by a federal oil-drilling moratorium that has been in place for 27 years.

"We're serious about that, and we're not going to change that," he told reporters and business executives at BIO International, an annual biotechnology industry conference in San Diego.

Schwarzenegger, who has endorsed McCain's presidential bid, said the federal offshore drilling ban was not to blame for soaring gas prices. In a statement issued earlier in the day, the governor said technological innovations and expanded fuel choices for consumers ultimately will lead the way to reduced fuel costs.

"We are in this situation because of our dependence on traditional petroleum-based oil," Schwarzenegger said in the statement, which referred only to Bush's call for lifting the ban and did not mention McCain.

2. He's the governor of California and he's no fool.
He'll never get reelected if he supports OSD.

3. It must be difficult to endorse someone who is
for everything you're not.

At least Maria endorsed Barack Obama who she agrees with.

4. Yeah, Arnold likes to sound like a liberal to fool you.
When he does that, it's because he knows he can risk it politically. Don't be patting him on the back yet. When he removes his veto from the health care bill passed by both Houses of the California legislature then I might consider him as being a good guy, but not until then.

10. With the state underfunding everything and massive cuts in schools health care is off
the table for both parties this year.

On the other hand if he actively helps to defeat the ammendment to ban Gay marriage - which he has already announced that he is against - it will start a ripple effect that will legalize Gay marriage through out the US.

For that he deserves a huge pat on the back.

11. Oh you believe that!
Arnold is ruining the state with his tax cuts. We have the sixth largest economy in the world and he isn't going after the tax revenues that he could because he has to keep the richest five percent happy with no new taxes. We have to get rid of the neo-cons that Arnold is breast feeding for his own political advantage and start making the many billionaires and mega corporations pay their fair share of taxes as the privilege of doing business here.

12. really? what tax cuts are you speaking of --?? Revenues declined to recession
and declines of property.

Property taxes are limited by actions taken in previous voters referendum which neither the Governor or the State Legislature has any control over.

Democrats in the Legislature have not voiced any interest in increasing taxes.

Please advise:

1) What tax cuts you are referring to

2) What tax increases the Democrats in the state legislature have passed that the Governor has vetoed?

And yes any Republican Governor that helps Gay marriage deserves a pat on the back - its a shame more Democrats don't stand up for it.

13. Oh for god's sake the wealthy including all the wealthy Saudis living in
California aren't anywhere paying what they should in property taxes for their properties yet they use more of the infrastructure than the modest home owner. Corporations that are making money from California are taking tax shelters overseas to avoid paying taxes. It goes on and on. Arnold said he was going to open the books but he doesn't want us to really see what's going on. Yes, he allowed gay marriage but any Democratic governor would have done so. Arnold does these little liberal things for publicity because it's something that doesn't cost him politically. He won't do anything meaningful though because he can't without upsetting the neo-cons that put him where he is.

8. I like what he says, but ALL oil, by definition, is "petroleum-based"
...because all oil is officially "petroleum".

It's typical Schwarzenegger misspeak, but maybe "fossil-based oil" is what he's looking for.
