Joe Biden Rips Rudy For Having "Zero National Security And Foreign Policy Experience"

Joe Biden Rips Rudy For Having "Zero National Security And Foreign Policy Experience"

By Greg Sargent - June 18, 2008, 1:03PM

Last fall, Joe Biden famously dismissed Rudy Giuliani's campaign rhetoric as little more than "a noun, a verb, and 9/11."

So I thought it would be a good idea to check in with Biden again, now that Rudy's emerged as John McCain's lead attack dog against Obama's alleged weakness on terror.

<...>

Rudy has no foreign policy experience. His aura of national security experience comes solely from the fact that he hit the political jackpot by being mayor of New York on 9/11. The notion that he knows anything about counter-terrorism at all is an illusion that flows from the countless pictures and video clips of him striding through the smoke and dust after the attacks.

Biden's full quote after the jump.

"It's no surprise that it takes a man with zero national security and foreign policy experience to defend the policies of John McCain and President Bush. The facts are that the policies President Bush has pursued and Senator McCain would continue have not made us safer. We're bogged down in Iraq with no end in sight and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan -- the people who actually attacked us on 9/11 -- have regrouped and are plotting new attacks. In fact, terrorist attacks around the world have increased since 9-11.

"When it comes to Guantanamo detainees, Senator McCain has been all over the map. A year ago, he recognized that Guantanamo was a stain on this country and joined me in advocating that it be closed down and recommending that the detainees be sent to Fort Leavenworth -- where there has never been a question that they would have Habeas Corpus rights. Now, Sen. McCain insists that Americans must choose between our values and our security. That's exactly wrong. Our values reinforce our security. Our failure to live up to them has been Al Qaeda's biggest recruiting tool."

with a GREAT wit.

6. The one major security decision Giuliani made, he f*cked up!
He went against his advisor's recommendations and put his Emergency Center *inside* the WTC complex.

I'm sick of this Rove-ian make-your-weakness-a-strength BS.

10. And, ghouliani didn't use the money to update the radios
that the rescuers needed so desperately.

"Several American news organisations are preparing exposés of the “untold story” of 9/11 after Giuliani’s dispute with the firefighters became embarrassingly public last week. He was the only leading presidential candidate not to appear at a Washington gathering of the International Association of Fire Fighters, which accused him of showing a “disgraceful lack of respect for the fallen” after the September 11 attacks.

Behind the union’s attack lies the grief and anger of families who believe their loved ones need not have died that day and their conviction that some bodies would never have been recovered had Giuliani had his way.

Jim Riches, 29, had been helping to rescue office workers in the north tower when it collapsed. In the dust and debris, his fellow firefighters did not realise that the south tower had already crashed to the ground. Despite the terrifying noise, survivors say they thought only the top storeys had toppled. They never heard the order to evacuate. “My son could have had 30 minutes to escape,” Riches Sr said.

The firefighters were still using the antiquated “handie-talkie” radios that failed to work during the 1993 bombing of the twin towers, when Giuliani was also mayor. He not only failed to replace them, but also located the city’s new emergency command centre at the World Trade Center against the advice of key officials. It proved useless when it was most needed.

Lack of communication also meant that warnings from police helicopters about an imminent collapse failed to get through.."

8. "a noun, a verb, and 9/11" is one of the best political quotes in my lifetime
I still laugh when I hear/read it. I would love Biden to be VP just so I can see what he comes up with during the debates.

15. I like the author's statement too:
"His aura of national security experience comes solely from the fact that he hit the political jackpot by being mayor of New York on 9/11."

and Bush should be seen not as a war/natl security president, but the one under whom we suffered the worst terrorist attack ever.
