Rudy Emerges As McCain's Front Man On Terror, Bashes Obama As "Defensive"

Flashback: Rudy Said The Law Was A "Far Greater Weapon" Against Terror Than Violence

By Greg Sargent - June 18, 2008, 10:51AM

For two days running now, Rudy Giuliani has been bashing Barack Obama because the Illinois Senator suggested in an interview that the convictions and imprisonment of the 1993 World Trade Center attackers showed that we can fight terrorism within the constraints of the Constitution.

Rudy has been pointing to Obama's quotes as proof that he's weak on terrorism, etc., etc., etc.

But when the convictions happened, back in 1994, here's what Rudy himself had to say:

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani declared that the verdict "demonstrates that New Yorkers won't meet violence with violence, but with a far greater weapon -- the law."

Seemed worth putting out there right about now.

Late Update: Here's Rudy this morning on CNN, lambasting the way in which the 1993 attack was dealt with:

5. No you don't get it.
My family lived in NY, I worked blocks from the WTC.

The first attacker are behind bars and had nothing to do with the second, and what on earth does this have to do with Iraq (war)?

Do you really believe that war is the answer?

10. It seems they are now fighting us in Iraq and Afghanistan
where well over 4,000 of our troops and heaven knows how many civilians have been killed in Iraq. I guess it's true that this is how George is keeping us safe.

George and Rudy were silent on our naval ship, the Cole?, that was attacked in Yemen a few months before Geo. took over. The investigation said Osama and his bunch were responsible. Again, no mention of this from bush, not a problem to ignore the attack? And, Osama is still running around somewhere, the real culprit on the 9-11 attack.

13. I agree.
Giuliani did nothing to prepare for subsequent attacks except to (idiotically) move his emergency HQ to the WTC complex and okay the multi-million dollar purchase of NYFD radios that were essentially unusable, resulting in considerable loss of life.

Granted, the Clinton response to the evident gathering threat was probably insufficient, too, in the sense that they did not send a few spec-for units into Afghanistan to wipe out the Qaeda leadership when they had the chance—even Richard Clarke will tell you so. But at least he did something, as opposed to Bush who, for nine months, refused to take the al Qaeda threat seriously and did less than nothing. That said, had law enforcement acted effectively and followed through on the information that was in FBI hands pre-911, the plot would have been easily foiled. For whatever reason, they did not.

12. McCain picks the wrong surrogate on the wrong issue

McCain picks the wrong surrogate on the wrong issue

Posted June 18th, 2008 at 2:20 pm

I have to admit, I found Rudy Giuliani’s presidential campaign enormously entertaining. From the moment he announced I was pretty confident his chances of winning the GOP nomination were about as good as my chances, but he offered humble bloggers like me a seemingly endless supply of mockery material. I was almost sorry to see him go.

Imagine, then, what a pleasant surprise it is to see the McCain campaign decide that Giuliani deserves to be front and center once again.

<...>

If we’re really, really lucky, Giuliani will become McCain’s leading surrogate on the issue. Because by any reasonable measure, there are very few figures in public life who are as completely incoherent on counter-terrorism as Rudy Giuliani.

Indeed, the fact that McCain would put Giuliani out there as his voice/attack-dog speaks volumes about his dubious judgment.
