Obama backs Lieberman against the wall (confronts him on Senate Floor)
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 06:39 PM by rndmprsn
http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/15766.html

Joe Lieberman, fully embracing his role as a Republican attack dog, took the lead in a GOP conference call this morning to attack Barack Obama’s Middle East policy. On the call, organized by far-right Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.), Lieberman argued, weakly, that Obama holds the U.S. responsible for Iran’s strength in the region...

...Obama, apparently, didn’t care for Lieberman’s comments, so much so that the Democratic presidential nominee confronted Lieberman directly on the Senate floor this afternoon. Subscription-only Roll Call reported:

During a Senate vote Wednesday, Obama dragged Lieberman by the hand to a far corner of the Senate chamber and engaged in what appeared to reporters in the gallery as an intense, three-minute conversation.

While it was unclear what the two were discussing, the body language suggested that Obama was trying to convince Lieberman of something and his stance appeared slightly intimidating.

Using forceful, but not angry, hand gestures, Obama literally backed up Lieberman against the wall, leaned in very close at times, and appeared to be trying to dominate the conversation, as the two talked over each other in a few instances.

CAN I GET AN AMEN?!

Obama needs his vote for what? There's gonna be a Dem landslide in the Senate in the Fall and Joementum will be losing any clout he had. Even the Repubs think that the Dems get more seats om Congress.

Kick his whiny little ass Barack!

Depends if Dems get to 60 in the Senate. If they do, I agree--Joe is toast. If they are at 58 or 59 though, Joe becomes more powerful than ever.

Hopefully, we will also increase our majority in the Senate by a strong enough margin to make him as inconsequential as he deserves to be.

Obama isn't getting his vote anyway, so Lieberman's rank as a majority committee head can be stripped by the Dems.

223. After November Joe's power will be gone.
The only reason he has any power after tacitly stabbing his voters in the back, is because the Senate is tied. Once the Dems have a majority larger than one (including Lieberman as R-Conn) he will be treated as the scum bag he is.

221. The books were published in 1950's. Much has been said about the
possible connection between WW1 and WW2 and the similarities in plot in the Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy.

I can tell you, as along time fan of the books, I very much looked forward to full length adult oriented non-animated versions of the tale.

19. For all the doubters: 'Unity' has never meant 'with the people trying to divide us.'
Rather, "unity" means "uniting the majority of Americans against the people trying to exploit division."

Joe Lieberman, for instance.

46. Yes, well said
Nor is "unity" about compromising our principles.

It *is* about an attitude, a willingness to hear people of differing opinions out. And obama, I think has already demonstrated that that's his style.

But Lieberman has no idea what the term means.

29. Joe was assigned to be Obama's "mentor." Every incoming Congressman gets
a veteran to show them the ropes--where to go, where the offices are, when to be where, etc. They don't get to pick. The two never had a relationship closer than a few days of, "So Harry Reid's office is there, and that's where my office is, and this lunch bar serves a great chicken salad, and..."

Any claims that Joe was a mentor in anything but name, or that the two had a working relationship past Obama's first several days in office, is either misled or is misleading.

I don't see how we can go wrong with a super majority veto proof congress. We should be able to get liberal legislation passed to out hearts content and that's exciting. I'm sure he'll go down in history as the greatest president ever! I just wish it was a woman! And it's been hard to take all the Hillary bashing on DU. :( We didn't have to experience that when Clark was running and leaving...and that was tough enough to let go. My hopes of a Hillary/Clark ticket have been dashed :( and he's not mentioned often as a possible VP for Obama...double whammy! The fact that he was a Hillary supporter doesn't help.

I'm trying to warm up and I have faith he'll be a great president...but it's been difficult and I can't wait for all this fighting to be over. I just need more time and I'm still in mourning. Remember how it was?

63. You read my mind, Hatalles!
LBJ was notorious for using his height and bearing to impose his will on people he had to bend to his way of thinking.

I first read about this in Robert Caro's brilliant LBJ bio series “Master of The Senate”. The move was called “The Treatment” and LBJ could wield it like a pro. He would just get in your grille and sometimes in a friendly way—sometimes not, just kind of intimidate people who needed persuading.

The Treatment One:

The Treatment Two:

The Treatment Three:

You know Lieberman was seething that the Junior senator has managed to outstrip him so thoroughly in just four years. And I hope to God that if Obama is elected that when Joe comes a' calling with hat in hand, that he finds himself relegated to beyond the gates of 1600 Penn with the chesey Polaroid photo hucksters and bogus Washington Monument miniature salesmen.

61. You are being too sensitive. LIEberman initiated the conversation.
From link provided above by another DUer:

...

Still, Obama and Lieberman seemed to be trying to keep the back-and-forth congenial as they both patted each other on the back during and after the exchange.

...

Lieberman approached Obama for a handshake and a word, and Obama immediately pulled Lieberman into a corner where the two could talk privately. For five minutes the two men engaged in what appeared to be a serious discussion, each wearing somber expressions and emphasizing their words with gestures.

After a few minutes, Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), sitting a few feet away with Schumer, shouted to Obama to keep his voice to a minimum and pointed to the gaggle of reporters assembled at the ledge of the press gallery.

The two continued their discussion, then shook hands politely and even shared a half-hug.

220. What would you prefer? Let Joe talk to him from TV highlights.
Politics IS a contact sport.

What did Bill say if you can't put the suit up and put your protective clothes on, you have no business on the field.

I'd prefer Obama get in most of these people's face than have them blather on a television tube about the fact that he is NOT TOUGH ENOUGH. What do they want the man to do, whip out his package and show the world he is a man?

Please spare me.

There is only one way to deal with someone who constantly barks: give them the opportunity to bite. If they decide at that point they don't want to bite, they can join you or you have eliminated them as a potential ally.

Everyone who is currently complaining at present AIPAC, Hillary---white voters with an emphasis on white women, Hispanic people, and other parts of the Democratic coalition want something specific. The louder they complain, the more likely they are to get face time with someone in Obama's campaign. Then depending on the number of people they can bring along, their agenda will be placed within the heart of Obama's campaign. If not, the change we can believe in might actually exclude them and whatever their interest is.

I just read a thread talking about the Daley machine versus the Clinton machine because Obama is no better than the DLC, we are all naive, and we will be disappointed because there is no real progressive out there.

From my point of view, the real party politics happen behind the scene...what gets covered is what people are willing to say to the public at large. We will never have a glass that sees 100% of the time. The press ability to get the right view has been drastically compromised. I'd be surprised if we even get the picture right 30% of the time.

104. I especially love this because Lieberman is a physical bully
when he thinks he's picking on a little guy. I was in the audience at the last debate between Lieberman and Lamont. At the end, after the cameras were off, one of the panelists asking questions went over to shake hands, and Lieberman--who didn't like the panelist's questions--grabbed him by the wrist really hard, with the intention of hurting him. (I know the panelist, and he told me about it himself.) He was shitty to Lamont afterwards too. Even from up in the balcony it was obvious he was using threatening, aggressive body language.

By the time the conventions roll around, no one will pay any attention simply because the campaign will be in full swing. Including what may be some mean left hooks on the floors of Congress.

Looks to me that despite all the conjecture that Obama doesn't have what it takes to lead the country that he in fact does.

Reality is Joe Lieberman is forever an Independent. Neither party really wants him. And hopefully at this point neither do the voters in Connecticutt. Wonder if Connecticutt allows for recall?

Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 01:56 PM by TwoSparkles
Obama is such an elegant speaker, and is dignified and fair minded. There are times that
I have often wondered if he will be tough enough. It wasn't that I doubted his ability
to be tough--but most of the time we see him behaving above-board and with such grace
and integrity.

I have to say--HELL YES!!! I'm so glad that Obama can be forceful, and that he's not afraid
to haul Lieberman's traitorous, war-lovin, doughy, neocon ass into a corner and verbally kick the shit
out of him.

We don't know what was said. However, it's obvious that Obama isn't afraid to tell it like it
is and call out someone--even if that person is a seasoned Senator.

I'm so happy to hear this.

We've got our Progressive dream candidate, folks. He's got the courage, wisdom and decency to
mop up this huge mess we're in--and take on those ruthless neocon bastards.

Each day with Obama as our nominee--brings promising and uplifting news!

171. I once worked for a candidate who was so nice
that I wondered if he would be tough enough if he got to Congress. Well, something came up during the campaign that I thought was a big problem and I told him about it... I wasn't sure he could fire someone, but after getting all the information, he did. You never know all sides of someone till you've known them for a while. And usually a campaign brings it all out.
