In the YouGov survey for the Daily Telegraph website, 67 percent of Germans polled said Democrat Obama would get their vote, while likely Republican nominee John McCain would get just a six percent vote.

“Germans are very much taken with his multi-cultural background and particularly his air of aristocratic humility,” Constanze Stelzenmüller, director of the German Marshall Fund in Berlin, told the paper.

Just 25 percent of Germans polled said they view the US as a “force for good,” and it seems their hopes are pinned on Obama to improve the transatlantic ties damaged during the Bush administration.

The paper reported that on average, 52 percent of respondents in Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Russia said they would vote for the Democratic front-runner if they could, against just 15 percent who said they would vote for Republican nominee John McCain.

1. I actually wish they'd stop doing this
because Americans have an annoying habit of saying "Hay guys let's just totally vote for whoever we think will piss Europe off most!"

4. Yeah Americans do have a stupid way of picking their leaders
I think the last moron was picked based on "who would you like to have a beer with". Our presidential nomination can be the equivalent of a game show.

2. Um, who gives a shit?
It's Germany. Another country. Didn't know they had squat to do with our electoral process.

6. That is true...
...but you know, the identity of the US President is just as important to many other countries as their own leader, albeit for varying reasons. The impact on the wider world is staggering and not something which is really touched upon inside the United States itself.

7. That's a very good point.
I think it is very important, particularly given Obama's articulation of what leadership is. But I don't know if it will make a difference to McCain voters here.
