175. Totally, completely expected as soon as she went dirty.
As an INDEPENDENT liberal, it is NEVER a surprise to me when the excessive ambitions of folks like Hillary and Bill lead them to give the GOP ammunition even as they shoot themselves in the foot with such despicable politics. She packaged it into a sound bite! She couldn't have wrapped it prettier, and with a prettier bow, if she'd been employed by Karl Rove. Every GOP tape recorder in the country caught it. You'd have to be a complete and total moron to not see it as a GOP attack ad immediately. Her ass-kissing sycophants have shit-for-brains in denying the scorched-earth strategy inherent in that.

2. The Repubs are the reason why the Dems wanted the contest to end on June 3rd instead of until August
It would simply provide Repubs even more ammunition because they always felt Obama was the more difficult challenger, and Limbaugh tried his damn hardest to muck up things for Obama.

Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 05:48 PM by Cali_Democrat
They can say...."see, even your own VP thinks you're not qualified."

Also, with all the baggage she brings, I'm sure the GOP would be salivating.

The bottom line is that Hillary said nasty things about Obama in the video and she ruined her own chances at VP, not the GOP. Nobody forced Hillary to attack Obama like that, she did it all on her own. That's why so many people opposed her on DU. Maybe you can finally see the light.

It's ipse dixit at it's most atrocious: "we say that this is the case, therefore it's so." Nobody's ever produced evidence that Obama used any right-wing material, as opposed to Clinton whose talking points were pulled straight from Limbaugh, the Freepers, and the lunatic right, all the way down to the "secret muslim" smear.

I was blown away that he was running like a repig. He said he was so different. But since he shares a ninety five per cent voting record with HRC, I am not exactly convinced he'll govern that way.

He also refuses to get his picture taken with Gavin Newsome, for whatever reason. Once that gets added to McClurkin, I'd supported HRC before Ohio, I want to disclose for the sake of the truth. But Harry and Louise was absolutely atrocious. But others might not be offended that easily.

99. Post proof of your argument or apologize.
In case you are really detached enough to be ignorant of the facts, there is not and never has been "right wing mailer" from Obama of the kind you describe.

The Obama campaign sent out a mailer pointing out, rightly, that the Clinton healthcare plan was to force everyone to buy health insurance whether they could afford it or not. Some people, meaning Clinton loyalists, thought that these mailers resembled an attack ad called "Harry and Louise" used against the Clinton healthcare initiative in 1994. That's where the story comes from. And yet, despite all the screaming and whining about "right wing attacks" nobody making that argument has ever been able to provide any evidence that there was even the smallest "below the belt" quality to the damned point.

You see, THAT they conjured an ad eerily similar to a right wing hit job ***IS WHAT'S BELOW THE BELT***. HRC could have sat on her ass eating bon bons in the nineties, but instead she rolled up her sleeves to get a better deal for the american people. Obama uses their ad, and you say it's fine? whatevs.

And your only way of winning an argument is to put words in somebody else's mouth.

Once again, in case you missed it in the first place: There is no evidence, none, other than the biased perceptions of Clinton supporters, that there's any connection between the mailer Obama sent and the Republican ad back in the '90s. Zilch. Zero. It's a connection that exists entirely in Clinton partisan land, to try and justify smearing Obama with every disgusting rumor they could invent. All based on the fact that the two things MUST be linked because, because they both feature a married couple sitting at a table, and they're both about healthcare! Oooh, booga booga!

In fact, 32 states had already voted and Obama was the clear front-runner. Then somebody who gave herself "experience credit" for the work she did at Rose Law Firm and as First Lady, decided that Obama, who has taught Constitutional Law at the University level and done community organizing, was nothing more than a single speech.

For anyone who doesn't want to watch it, it's basically a smattering of the Clintons' talking points about how unqualified and naive Obama is, with the message of "Not even Democrats think he's good enough."

The centerpiece is, of course, Hillary's endorsement of John McCain and dismissal of Obama's candidacy as "a speech he gave in 2002."

There is NO POSSIBLE EXCUSE for the things that the Clintons said about Obama during the primary, and at the time EVERYBODY except the Clinton supporters recognized that they were cutting ads for the GOP. Now that we've been proven right, and you've been proven wrong, it's OUR fault for being "divided"?

There's a dude who's the typical "claims to be an independent but loves every republican and hates every democrat". He sits with a coworker every morning and I haven't heard them talk much politics. But today they started and every word out of this guys mouth about Obama was a Clinton talking point "Blah blah blah...voted present......blah blah blah reverend Wright....blah blah blah....cocaine." All the stuff we heard coming from Clinton surrogates non stop." Yes, I realize that some of this stuff could and would have come out anyway, but it's lent more credence because it came from a democrat.

you seem to need.

Obama's been over and above being gracious to an opponent who has trashed him and disrespected him repeatedly, and will continue to do so until she can try to derail him on the way to the WH.

She deserves to lose a lot, of not all, of her political capital for trying to sabotage the Dems' clear path to the WH if she couldn't lead it.

Obama or McCain. That's the choice. And if you can't tell the ideological difference, that's your problem. You can be replaced with plenty of new voters who get it.

This is NOT the first time there have been ugly battles in primaries - it won't be the last either.

Nominations have gone all the way to the conventions before and everyone didn't have a hissy fit over it. The process played out like a democracy is supposed to work like.

THE RNC is a bunch of desperate assholes. Obama will do fine holding his ground - he's already proven it.

Can we fucking drop all this crap and focus on McCain and smacking those god damned republicans out of our government? Pissing and whining about this crap over and over and over is ridiculous.

Politics is a dirty game - if you don't realize that by now you haven't been paying attention.

122. There's a HUGE difference...
... between having a Republican say it and having one of the most prominent Democrats in the party - and the wife of a former President - say it. This whole "they would have said it anyway" line parroted by some (not all) Hillary supporters throughout the campaign is dead wrong. Watch the ad again and tell me with a straight face this isn't going to sway some undecided voters to support McCain.

Thankfully, the RNC's running this on June 3 rather than later. Interesting strategy. They are either (1) hoping to keep Hillary off the ticket, or (2) hoping to weaken Obama by making him look spineless if he *does* pick Hillary while her belittling of him is on constant repeat in the media. It's a win-win for the Republicans, courtesy of Hillary.

127. The mistake they've made (thankfully) is to burn out this footage early in the race.
People will no longer be able to hear it at election time after hearing it too many times... it will be like muzak, on in the background but unnoticed.

If they wanted it to be effective, they should have saved it for the end.

134. OK... CALM DOWN! There IS a solution to this, of course.
Hillary can carry water for the party by cutting an ad rebutting all those statements she made.

Who better to neutralize the argument than the one who originally made it?

In fact, they could even do a "unity" spot that features Hillary, Edwards, and Biden.

Rethugs are amateurs. They are no match for this year's Team Democrat.

From this point on the elections are nothing but comedy. She was stupid to have said that and now it's coming back to haunt her.

Seriously Derek I hope she has solid spiritual and mental support because she's going to need it. When the mighty fall low the landing isn't very soft.

...that McCain is a doddering old fool, or when Romney said that he and Obama represent a new kind of leadership while McCain is just more of the same.

Oh, that's right. They didn't do that. And all the other Democrats in this ad are saying "I have more experience than Obama does", which is a perfectly fine argument to make in a primary. No, this is honestly the first time I know of that a Democrat favorably compared a Republican to a Democratic rival.

They never do - because they have no answer.

It is what it is, nothing short of an implicit endorsement of John McCain over Obama.

Biden, Edwards and Bubba were tossed in, too.

But, should someone do it, that was pretty tame compared to what could be thrown together in regards to Republicans and Right Wingers dissing McCain, from "he scares me" to Limbaugh rants against him.

178. Effective, yes, but not *as* effective.
Using *just* Hillary's quotes isn't as effective as being able to sprinkle in several other Democrats, to make the opinion seem broader. Especially given Hillary's negative in the independent and Republican audiences. (Biden was probably the best insertion targeting those voters, while Bubba and Edwards were included to go after Hillary and Edwards voters.)

Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 03:49 PM by depakid
That Hillary was only stating the OBVIOUS -same as ANY politician would have, shouldn't surprise anyone nor be a source for the sort of thin skinned and pathetic vitriol we see both on this thread- and on multiple posts every day around here.

Get a clue, folks.

This is standard operating procedure in politics- alsways has been and always will be, irrespective of the fact many of the naive and inexperienced among us want or expect other candidates to simply roll over and bow down to their choices.

Edited on Thu Jun-05-08 04:24 PM by depakid
Simply pointing out the obvious (at least, that's how I saw it at the time).

McCain DOES have years of experience (though his record shows that his experience is replete with corruption, ineptitude and dishonesty- how bout that "experience" at the Iraqi market? LOL).

The bottom line is that Hillary didn't say anything that many others hadn't already considered- and nothing that wasn't going to be used in the general campaign anyway.

Indeed, one can argue that the fact that Hillary is saying it makes it much less effective than it would be coming from someone more appealing to their likely voters than she is!

and every thinking person understands that it's going to be an issue.

Seems to me it's kind of ridiculous not to acknowledge and deal with it. Like I mentioned above, there are worse things in McCain's case than lack of experience.
