Prediction: Obama will choose woman VP--but it won't be Hillary
I didn't have a horse in the race between Obama and Hillary, although I did make up my mind to vote
for Obama the night before our NC primary. I was an early supporter of Edwards.

It did just occur to me that it would be fun to look at a list of countries that have had
women presidents or prime ministers. How many can you name? The link to the following
stops with the end of the 20th Century, but it sure does give credence to the notion
that the US is WAY behind the times.

http://womenshistory.about.com/od/rulers20th/a/women_heads.htm

I believe that Obama knows one way to grab a large bloc of the Hillary supporters is to
select a qualified woman--not just a woman because she's a woman. I think it would
be a terrible mistake to select Hillary as VP--because while she had a right
to keep campaigning to the bitter end, I think in the end she'll be bitter, and that will not
make her a good VP choice.

It's time for the U.S. to acknowledge they aren't always leaders in the world; it is time
for the U.S. to follow the lead of many, many other countries in electing a President/Vice President
that aren't white males.

1. India, Pakistan, and Israel come immediately to mind
and these were all strong leaders, all, sadly, passed away now. Then there is Britain and Germany as well--all these remembered without reference.

2. I'm a woman but I think that would be a bad idea b/c there is not
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 03:00 PM by Skwmom
a woman I can think of who would convince the American Public that they can keep America safe.

I think Obama should pick a male VP and groom a woman for the VP/Pres in 2016. By groom I mean put her in the position, give her the public exposure where she would be viewed as strong on national security.

Even soccer moms will vote for the male who they view as keeping America safe b/c they will put the security of their children ahead of wanting a woman VP.

Because Clinton and the GOP (e.g., Hucklebee) have put the A word out there, Obama needs to tap someone who America will view as ready to take over on a moments notice. I say Schweitzer, Schweitzer, Schweitzer. A long resume or military service is not required, just good judgment and the right image(as in I can take charge and keep America safe).

Obama is the ONLY candidate who could tap a VP like Schweitzer. Together they will be an unbeatable team b/c with that ticket McCain will NEVER be able to claim the mantle of change.

5. But not a lot of people know anything about Schweitzer... I'm having my own dream Obama/Caroline
Caroline Kennedy moment.... it'll never happen, but I can dream..

3. I doubt it. I'm betting on it being Mark Warner or Sam Nunn

4. I agree -- even if that will further anger her supporters ...

After her arrogant performance last night, she DESERVES to be
reminded that she is NOT the only woman in this country qualified
to be VP. She may be an exceptional woman but, as her pal Paul
Begala has said of General Petraeus, "she ain't the baby Jesus."

My top nominee: Kathleen Sebelius. (Current Kansas governor
and daughter of a former Ohio governor.)

On edit: If not a woman, then I agree with poster above that
Mark Warner would be a great choice.

6. Look at the list! 46 women have been either President or Prime Minister
in other countries.

Assumptions need to be challenged, such as the one above that only a white male can keep the U.S. safe.

What will keep the U.S. safe is to recognize we can't go on bullying the rest of the world. It's time
for a change in thinking, not just a change in skin color or gender.

7. That's the one thing that would piss off Hillary the most, unfortunately... a bit of a quandry huh?
Bill actually said this to someone recently.

8. I don't neccesarily think he should pick a woman
But I do think that there are some worthy females to be considered, along with some worthy males to be considered. It's depressing that the gender will be an issue. Wasn't it said that Obama was going to consider hundreds of candidates, among them women? I mean, of course Hillary will be on that list, but it frustrates me that no other woman could be considered.

9. Sure, just choose any old woman.
Eighteen million Democrats did not really prefer Hillary Clinton, they just wanted any old woman.

Choosing another woman won't be transparent at all.

11. A lot of those 18 million Dems who supported Hillary believed she had a shot
at getting herself on the list I cited in the OP. There are even more of us women who weren't Hillary
supporters who would LOVE to see a qualified woman on the ticket with Obama. You can't tell me
in a country this size there aren't hundreds of women qualified for the VP position.

It's complete BS to suggest that Hillary Clinton is the ONLY woman in this country qualified to be President. Complete BS. The media may want you to believe that, but I sure as hell don't.

10. I don't think so
because to the Hillary supporters who want her to be VP choosing a different woman would be considered an insult. "HEll hath no fury like a woman scorned." Choosing another woman over Hillary would create a lot of fury.

13. I HOPE Obama picks a woman not Hilllary -- someone who NEVER supported the IWR
Obama should pick someone who NEVER supported the Iraq War Resolution when it was the popular thing to do. This would be in keeping with his notion that we not only need to extricate ourselves from Iraq but from the mind-set that got us into Iraq. There's too much sense that those who've turned against the war after they were for it are really against the war when it turns sour and unpopular.

CA Sen Barbara Boxer voted NO on IWR, and has LOTS of foreign policy background, is very likeable and has no serious baggage AFAIK, said to be one of the MOST capable and knowledgeable in the senate. She might help carry FL.

MI Sen Stabenow also voted no on IWR, and might appeal in the midwest and to the proverbial 'white working class'.

Sebelius would be good too, and help broaden Obama's support.
