How was Obama's speech at AIPAC received?
My parents have threatened to vote for McCain because of Israel, but as lifelong Democrats, I think they might be warming up to Obama.

To save my life, I can't understand why people think that the Pukes are "better" on Israel.

1. I listened and (to my ears) it was enthusiastically received.
They seemed to really like him.

Not so much with Clinton.

3. Yesterday I got my Mom to finally admit she doesn't like McCain,
but she also doesn't like Obama. I asked her if she didn't like him as a candidate or as a person. She just said, "I don't like Democrats, but I do like him as a person". My bet is before November she'll vote for Obama and not tell my Dad. :)

6. That's funny, tridim
I didn't find out until years later that my dad voted for Nixon in '72.
He said to my mom "don't tell the kids."

5. He had a lof of applause
more than Hillary, which was really awkward (and I am a supporter of her).

You have to remember that most of Obama's advisers and fund raiser are Jews. Certainly were in the beginning.

I thought it was great that he mentioned Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman, two Jews who, with African American James Chaney were murdered in Mississippi during the Freedom Summer of 1964.

It is easy to see international conflicts, including the ones in the Middle East, as "us vs. them," where going to war is the only solution. And on this level, yes, the Republicans are better.

However the Israelis themselves have long opted for a diplomatic solution so many would welcome Obama.

On the other hand, there are many elderly Jews here who do remember when Israel was all alone in the world, when the Arabist tilted State Dept. did not support Israel, so they have this fear and feel more secure with a strong hand.

Just something we have to accept.

7. Glad he mentioned Schwerner, Chaney and Goodman, as well
I was 13 when that horrible incident took place and I remember how freaked out my parents were.

10. The point is that people believe he's Muslim. They're sold on it.

What could have helped Obama, if TUCC was not demonized and he had expanded on their movement. TUCC is a staunch ally and supporter of Israel. They may have commemorated Farrakhan but that's only due to his contributions to the Black community. TUCC and Obama really support Israel and the bond Israel has with the United States. It's the same thing with the gay community. TUCC is like the only church in America who fights, and has forever fought for gay rights.

I think it's the muslim rumor of stupidity that keeps hurting Obama and now there's a double rumor because of a picture from Jet Magazine of Michelle Obama (she was all the way in the back and looked like a newbie to the convention) and Mrs. Farrakhan with 5 or 6 other Black female leaders, had at a convention meeting in July 2004 in Washington DC. This works against Obama, unfortunately.

12. "I can't understand why people think that the Pukes are "better" on Israel."...
It's the quality of pandering that the Republican Party does.

13. Not a simple pandering
Let's be honest: many Evangelical - the main supporters of the Republicans - are staunch supporters of Israel, something about it says in the bible. (Of course, they expect all the Jews to convert after the second coming). And many Democrats criticize Israel for the Palestinian conflict. Just read all the posts here on DU, criticizing Obama and AIPAC.

Thus, it is generally accepted that the Republicans are more supportive and less critical of Israel.

Funny though. In the old days, when the Republican party was dominated by "Country Club" people, most of them would also be anti-Semites, who would want to keep Jews away from their suburbs and their country clubs.

15. That's right. Because the quest for justice and taking care of one's neighbors
is ingrained in the teaching of Judaism.
