{1} Visions of Our Fathers

"This world and yonder world are incessantly giving birth:
every cause is a mother, its effects the child.
When the effect is born, it too becomes a cause
and gives birth to wonderous effects.
These causes are generation on generation, but it needs
a very well lighted eye to see the links in their chain."
--Jalal-ad-din Rumi; Persian Sufi poet

One of the things that I have enjoyed the most during this democratic primary has been interacting with young adults, who are participating in their first national election. I am old, and at the stage of life where it seems important to pass on what I have had the opportunity to learn in my life. Last week, one young man asked me how it is that I have been able to tell them, in a fairly accurate way, what things would take place in the days and weeks to come.

Part of the reason is, of course, because I can talk to other people who are closer to the on-going events than I am. It is important to seek out a wide range resources, including people and information, because information is a form of power.

One of these was a mentor I had when I was their age. He told me that if you study what happened yesterday, or a week, month, year, decade, or century ago, you can say what will happen tomorrow, and next week, month, year, and decade. Because in most ways, today is a consequence of yesterday, and tomorrow will thus be a consequence of today.

The only thing that can change, he taught me, are people. And if an individual or group wants to change tomorrow, it is important that they change themselves today. For in order to do more, we must be more. The opportunity to change ourselves, and thus begin to change everything around us, is offered to us each and every day.

Yet change is hard. It is always met with resistance. Individuals and groups tend to want things to stay much the same as what they are familiar with, because that is most comfortable. The tendency to want to find that comfort is the reason that George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were able to "win" the presidential elections in 2000 and 2004. Many people wanted what is familiar, and as Kevin Phillips pointed out in "American Dynasty," a large number of people looked at George Bush and saw his father. More, Dick Cheney represented the "stability" of the past.

But we cannot go backwards. The current administration provides proof of the folly of trying to secure the comfort of the past. Now, let’s take a look at the future, for our country is faced with a choice between the folly of looking backwards, versuses the potential of moving forward.

{2} The Strength of Our Mothers

"I myself have no power. It’s the people behind me who have the power. …. But if you’re asking about strength, not power, then I can say that the greatest strength is gentleness.
--Tadodaho Leon Shenandoah; Haudenosaunee (Six Nations Iroquois Confederacy)

When he was a community organizer in Chicago, young Barack Obama became frustrated. He had the best of intentions, but was frustrated by his inability to bring about the types of changes that he recognized were needed to improve the quality of life in the communities he served. He understood that in order to do more, he had to be more. So he went back to school, and became and attorney.

In the 2007-2208 democratic primary, we had a number of highly qualified candidates. Many of them had significant experience in domestic and foreign policy. Any one of them would have been a great improvement over either George Bush or any of the republican candidates.

The most talented of these appeared to be Senator Hillary Clinton. She ran a campaign that said her 36 years of experience would make her "ready on Day One." She was able to identify a number of important things that she would do for people. And this is generally what appeals to the public, because more often than not in Western Society, people want leaders who will do things for them.

Then, almost out of no where, Barack Obama began to be viewed as a serious challenger to Senator Clinton. His campaign was based on the need for change. And he said that when he became president, he would require the cooperation of the grass roots to achieve real change in our society.

The campaign was unique in American history. There were efforts to use events from Obama’s past against him. But these attempts failed. Some felt it was because the media was favoring him. Others believed that Obama had "fooled" his supporters. But, in fact, his strength came from the people behind him. They were responding to a power that is contrary to all Western thought.

While none can doubt that Senator Clinton sincerely wanted to bring positive changes to this country, her campaign was run by experts in the past. Obama likewise advocates change, and his campaign was run by people with the vision to change the tactics and goals for today. Young people in particular invested themselves in his campaign, and as others began to catch on, Obama came from behind to win an upset.

As expected, we see resistance, even within the party. There are those who fold their arms firmly across their chests, and say, "No!" to the Obama campaign. But there are many more who are today shaking hands with others, and saying, "Yes!" And "yes" is a more powerful idea than "no." It offers many more possibilities for us, and opens more potentials for our country.

This summer, a campaign that defines the past versus the future begins in earnest. John McCain is a fossil of the republican past. If he is elected, we will continue in the downward spiral. When he mocks Obama for wanted to end the war in Iraq, we must understand that the next link in the chain that binds McCain to the Bush-Cheney policies involves a widening of the military occupation of the Middle East.

McCain fronts for the one-eyed giant that Thomas Merton spoke of in his book "Gandhi on Non-Violence." He is a puppet of those who use science to advance the destructive forces that endanger our world. The Obama campaign balances the western advances in science with the wisdom found in the rest of the world, which "opens the door to a life in which the individual is not lost in the cosmos and in society but found in them" (Merton)

We have the opportunity to begin to make the changes today that will improve the nation tomorrow. Say, "Yes!"

"The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks;
the long day wanes; the slow moon climbs;
the deep moans round with many voices.
Come, my friends.
‘Tis not too late to seek a newer world."
--Alfred, Lord Tennyson

5. Thank you.
There is a new energy in this nation today. More, people around the globe are looking at the United States, and hoping that we will again become that "hope for better days" that you spoke of. I think that we have the potential to fulfill much of the promise that people my age hoped for 40 years ago.

7. Last night, after Obama spoke,
my younger son looked at me and said, "This must be a special time for you." He said that in the last seven years, he had thought that the future seemed pretty dark, but that the Obama campaign has made him feel like his generation can accomplish great things. And that is exactly why this is such a special time for you and I.

21. I know how you feel
Two of my nephews called last night to tell me that they were so excited and hopeful about the future of our country because of Obama. One of them voted for Obama in Oklahoma and the other one caucused for Obama in Kansas. The older one admitted that he was first attracted to Obama because of Michelle's striking resemblence to his girlfriend. Now he's on board because he likes what Obama says he will do.

I'm so very proud of my nephews for caring enough to get involved. I'm also very touched that they cared enough to share their joy with me.

She's sixteen now. And, from what my Kansas nephew told me, she was part of the motivation for him to get to the caucus to support Obama. She called and reminded him to get his butt in gear.

I tell you, this younger generation is paying attention. Even when they can't vote themselves they're trying their best to rally those who can. You gotta love that.

8. "Yes!" feels good.
The Bush-Cheney administration has run a program that attempts to make people feel helpless and hopeless. Their message has been "No!" It feels good to see people uniting to change that.

And you know that, for sure."

14. Yes, I agree.
I think that "Paradise" is a state of consciousness, accessable to us, here and now. Last night, I was standing outside, and there was a gentle rain. (My mother always said that I wasn't smart enough to get in out of the rain.) There were fire flies all over. And I kept thinking, "Yes!" That is a very different consciousness from if I were thinking, "No!"

And how long before she finally acknowledges that he is the nominee and that the position won't be hers? Also, I have to say I find it annoying that people now think the veep spot is hers for the taking, just like they thought the presidency was. That choice has also been the prerogative of the nominee.

on one of your threads, I mentioned that Rahm Emaunel had been tasked with telling Hillary Clinton that she needed to accept the Rules & Bylaws Committee's decision, or that a number of her most important supporters in Washington would step back. And that after the June 3 primaries, the super delegates would put the contest out of reach. I said that she would shut her campaign down, and end it on June 6. It is possible that she will tomorrow, but almost certainly by Friday evening.

13. I am so glad we are finally in GENERAL ELECTION mode.
I am very ready to start kicking right-wing butt.

As far as Hillary is concerned, she has a couple of choices in front of her. I hope she makes some wise decisions, but if she doesn't, as has been shown time and time again through the course of this campaign, we'll survive.

It is time to start articulating the differences between Democrats and Republicans. The Presidential battle is only part of our jobs. There is a down-ticket battle that must be waged. This is a unique opportunity that we have. We've won three straight special elections. We have an opportunity to start reversing the right-wing hold on states like Texas.

We are living in exciting times!

17. There are two people
close to Hillary Clinton who have been pushing the idea of her being VP on the Obama ticket. (We can "code name" them Bill C. and Harold I.) But I think that it is more likely that she will end up heading the Health & Human Services Department, where she will work on health care issues. This is what has been most important to her throughout her career. I think the ending of her speech last night indicated that she is giving this offer serious consideration.

29. Yes!
Obama spoke very eloquently last night about how the promise of a better future is essential to the very idea of America.

Bush and Cheney have woven a dark spell over this country, making mockeries of its very foundations and turning its most precious documents into idle pieces of paper. The best we could hope for, in the half-world their spell created, was not to be attacked again by enemies who lurk in every shadow and seek to kill us for no rational reason.

To hear Obama speak again to the true ideals of what makes America great was profoundly moving. The reign of witches is coming to an end, and America will be America again.

Yes!

has been an interesting experience. Even Norah O'Donnell on MSNBC, who is rather conservative, has been a giggle: she was saying to an ex-Bush aide that the contrast between Obama and McCain is stark. She said McCain is old, while Obama is young, tall, and thin. The republican said that McCain would look strong and experienced, while Obama would look "athletic." Pretty sad, the republicans.

32. I thought
that Obamas speech last night was one of the most inspiring of my generation. Some people simply have the natural ability to inspire and lead people but to create such hope is a rare feat I would say. Now the question is who will be VP? Personally I always thought it would be odd to have either of these two (Clinton & Obama) on the same team at the end of the day, a little too close to home if you know what I mean? Obviously he has to decide where he needs the most help at the polls, a candidate that will strengthen his already strong platform so who will it be?

47. My sons and I
were talking about Obama last night, and my younger son asked me when I first thought he would become president. I said that four years ago, when he spoke at the democratic national convention, I thought he was different that the usual politician. I recalled a thread on DU that night -- I believe it was started by trumad -- in which I participated.

I said that when I listened to him, I was reminded of Malcolm X's autobiography, where he told of speaking at a Harvard Law School forum. As he looked out a window, he became aware that he was looking in the direction of his old criminal hang-out. At the end of the book, he talked about how he wondered what his life might have been like if he had had the oportunity to go to law school as a young man, rather than prison. I said I thought we had just found the answer to that.

We have a lot of problems in our society. But we have the potential to bring about the best potential, rather than the worst. And the world is listening, and counting on us to do the right thing.
