2. LOTS OF PHOTOS: Primary Night Rally, Excel Energy Center (1 of 2)
Here are photos of Barack Obama's primary night rally tonight, Tues June 3, 2008
at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Look at the diversity of this crowd, as well as the size.

There were an estimated 17,000 inside the arena and another 15,000 outside.
At one point Barack is covered by supporters hands and secret service have to actually
pull them back. The photos of Barack and Michelle make clear the genuine affection and
respect they have for each other. I look forward to the day that the Obama girls
get their puppy!

5. Clinton blogger Taylor Marsh ready to move on, support the democrat
This is an encouraging sign. Pro Clinton blogger Taylor Marsh is ready to move on, trying to lead her followers to accept Obama.

For Clinton, A Following Of 'Marshans'

By Krissah Williams Washington Post Wednesday, June 4, 2008; Page C01

Michelle Marshall, a.k.a. Taylor Marsh, in 2002. "Nobody's more in touch with Clinton supporters, except maybe the Clinton campaign," she says. (Www.taylormarsh.com)

LAS VEGAS -- Blogger Michelle Marshall has a confession to make. She's one die-hard Clintonite who has already moved on. She's ready to vote for Sen. Barack Obama.

But don't tell that to the legions of Hillary Clinton fans who have made Marshall their de facto leader. They're the faithful, the ones who call themselves "Marshans," read her posts every day, send checks to her Web site and refuse to believe that anyone other than Clinton can beat Sen. John McCain.

In recent weeks, as Clinton's withdrawal from the race has become all but inevitable, Marshall has tried to tiptoe toward leading her followers to accept Obama as the nominee. But every time she suggests that it might be over for Clinton, she is bombarded by comments to the contrary.

"My readers are really hurt. They've got their heart and soul in it," Marshall said. "I don't have that. I'm not angry with anyone. I just want to win."

6. Al Giordano looks under the hood of Sen Clinton's speech:

Parsing Senator Clinton’s Speech

By Al Giordano June 4 2008

Real quick: I think that Senator Clinton’s speech was fine.

She didn’t concede. (The Field didn’t expect her to.) But nor did she declare that she’s going to go on a Kamikaze mission.

“I will be making no decisions tonight.” Check.

“I will carry your stories and dreams with me.” Check.

“I want to hear from you.” Write a check.

“I will be consulting with party leaders.” Check.

“The best interests of our party and our country.” Check.

7. Oliver Willis on Hillary's speechifying - its a mess, shades of GW!
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 12:16 AM by WillYourVoteBCounted
Oh noeee! Hillary borrows GW's sound bites for speechifying.

Clinton’s Speech

Oliver Willis June 3, 2008

Not finished yet, but it’s a mess. Like, couldn’t she be more graceful?

“We stayed the course”? Really, Hillary? We kind of went down that path before.

This speech just went on and on, and the crowd was right out of the Roman Coliseum with their “Denver” nonsense.

Please end this so our next president can come on and speak to us.

One of Olivers's readers comments:

If she doesn’t fight hard for Obama, she will destroy the party and she will go down with the ship.
She won’t save it in 2012, her political career will be over and no other woman will get a shot at the president for at least a generation.

(Just like her failed health care proposal when she was first lady.)

OFFICIAL: HISTORY IS MADE AS BARACK OBAMA IS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE FOR PRESIDENT

Oliver Willis June 3, 2008

This is for the ones who were shackled and not recognized as human.
This is for the ones who fought for the right to vote for all.
This is for the ones who died in defense of freedom.
This is for making “created equal” more real.
This is for Dr. King.
This is for the next generation.
This is for America.

9. Obama wins, Clinton claims victory

Obama wins, Clinton claims victory

by Goldy at Horsesass 06/03/2008, 6:50 PM

I’m listening to Hillary Clinton speak and I can’t quite figure out where she’s going. She started off very conciliatory, but she didn’t concede. And then she went into her usual schtick about winning the popular vote, and winning the swing states. So who knows.

Meanwhile everybody else seems to know Obama is the nominee but her (and her fans,) which makes Clinton’s speech all the more uncomfortable to watch. I feel like I’m watch a Pirandello play.

UPDATE <7:15PM>:
Well whaddaya know… Obama just claimed victory too!

10. Jack and Jill Politics: time to houseclean at the Congressional Black Caucus, get rid of DLC
Edited on Wed Jun-04-08 12:34 AM by WillYourVoteBCounted
Jill at Jack and Jill Politics says it is time to do some housecleaning in the Congressional Black Caucus now. Not just for carrying Hillary Clinton's water, but for voting in favor of bills that they shouldn't have, for colluding with Fox noise, for throwing other CBC members under the bus.
She states: "We started CBC Monitor with the precise intention of putting a spotlight on why the Caucus was being infested and infected with DLC tendencies."

Now That Obama Has Closed the Deal...

Jack and Jill Politics Tuesday, June 03, 2008

As being reported by the AP, my colleague, Jack Turner, has rightly pointed out, it's time to get down to business.

In the short time I've blogged here, I've read numerous comments about housecleaning in the Congressional Black Caucus. I recently posted about the CBC Monitor Report card, and we can always use some volunteers to track bills. More on that later.

The fire is hot, and it's time to strike. Now that the "inevitable" Democratic nominee is being told to take a hike as I write this, she's implying she'll concede if Obama puts her on the ticket.

As another colleague, Rikyrah, would say, "Hell to the NAW!"

At this moment, we have a bunch of CBC Hanky Heads that are scrambling for cover, because they are hearing loudly from their districts; many of them that went overwhelmingly for Obama, while they were toting Missy Clinton's water. However, merely fielding challengers to the incumbents because they supported Clinton defeats the entire Democratic process, such as it is. There are other reasons for challenging them...

Now that Obama has closed the Deal, I say it's time to send a message to those CBC members who are cowering in fear that they're going to get challengers to their seats, and that they're going to actually have to work to get re-elected, instead of mailing in their performances as legislators. And I'm all for that.

11. Raving Black Lunatic r/e Hillary: My Memory is Like an Elephant's Nose
Oh we do not forget.

My Memory is Like an Elephant's Nose

Raving Black Lunatic Tuesday, June 3, 2008

I see you Miss Ann.

Pandering and insinuating, using innuendo to make your wounds so nobody can find the blood from a direct cut. Your platitudes and smiles are the wool used to hide sharpened canines; you are the wolf and you are hunting. I smell you.

Oh, you long ago realized that this hunt has been squandered, all that is left for you now is the carrion forgotten by the victor and the hope that the next hunt will be time for you to make your kill. I see the calculations in your every gesture, the forced smile that stretches your skin into a ghoulish mask.

Your focus is surely on the next hunt. It's why your every every thank you is followed by a plea for sustenance. You claim it is for this fight, and that may be true. But, it is not to continue the battle, but so you can erase the debt you have gathered.

You claim to be the choice of "hard-working people," yet, you cannot convince those folks to support you with what they've earned through their "hard-working" ways. I see you.

You await the young lion's failure; you are confident that the wounds you have inflicted on him will render him unable to take over the pride. When he fails, you plan to supplant him; your goals are so obvious they are almost childish.

Your plan hinges on the short memories of the pride, particularly it's darker-hued members. Ahh, but that is where you err because we, the darker brothers, do not forget even when we forgive. Our memories stretch back for generations, and once we have marked you it is forever.

12. The Field Negro: "What a ride!"

What a ride!

The Field Negro Tuesday, June 03, 2008

By all accounts this will be a historic night here in A-merry-ca. You Obamaholics should be proud of your boy. The first black man (albeit a half and half one) to win a major party nomination for president of these divided states. I for one will have to eat a little crow and admit that I didn't even think that the "O" man could win the dumbocratic nomination. All along you Obamaholics told me to watch and see, and all I could think of was therapy; these folks need some serious ass therapy. But you did it, as I write this your boy is six delegates short of his 2,118 needed to clinch the dumbocratic nomination and Hillary is begging to be on the ticket with him. Who knew?

I was also inspired by a post by my man Baratunde over at Jack & Jill Politics , and it made me want to talk about this past political season. It has been one hell of a ride, and we aren't even in the finals yet. We have had haters like Tavis Smiley, and Juan Williams throw in their two cents at every turn. We have had doubters like yours truly chirping about the Obamaholics and all his "O" love at every turn. And we have had the flat out racist (see the FAKE NEWS NETWORK and certain voters from the Appalachian states) who would just as soon vote for Charles Manson before they put a Negro family in their "white" House. And there has been the good too. Folks in states like Iowa and Oregon, Lilly white folks, ignoring the "O" man's race and buying into a movement. People like Christopher, a regular to this site, who has had nothing but love and devotion for the "O" man from day one. People like Christopher and all of you Obamaholics deserve all the credit in the world. You gave your money your time and your votes. And without it, the "O" man would be slinking back to the South Side of Chicago to work on his bowling and his jump shot. It has been beautiful to watch the Clintons and all of their minions (see the clowns over at Bartcop and other various pro Hillary sites) become unraveled and exposed for the patronizing racist frauds that they really are.

38. that's the name of the blog it's from
The blogger appears to be an African american community activist. There is a play on House vs Field in the sense that aslab=ve master's most obedient and loyal slaves were traditionally assigned to work in the house, while unruly and disobedient (i.e. independent minded) were sent off to the field to do backbreaking work where their attitude was of no consequence. The blogger calls behavior of black figures in the media who are chummy with the likes of say Pat Buchanan as house, while people getting arrested for political reasons would be field.

15. Enough!
28 Years of Bush Clinton Bush over!

Enough

Tuesday, June 3, 2008

I've had enough of all of them.

The Clintons and the Bushes that is. This country has had a Clinton or a Bush in the White House for the past 28 years and to be honest I hope we never see another of either of those families in power again.

I've had enough of older baby boomers and the "greatest generation" running things. I'm 45 and I know damn well that someone my age would make a fine President. And I want someone my age to be President. Someone who's been through the same things I've been through, historically speaking.

I've had enough of rich white people running things. That's all we've had for the past two hundred and some years and it's time for people of color to step up and lead this nation for a change, after all people of color are in the majority world wide, as much as Pat Buchanan and Mike Malkin hate it.

I know Sen. Obama is going to make mistakes when he gets elected President, and I know he's not perfect, no one is. But what I also know is that we need a break from the Bushes and the Clintons and from the way we've always done things. It's time to go in a new direction, one that is more fair for more Americans. And I believe the only way were ever going to change things is to get away from the old politicians and their unoriginal lockstep way of thinking and doing business.

What I really think would be best for our country is a wholesale departure from our current corporate system, but that's not going to happen because corporate control of our government is too strong. But maybe, just maybe, if we have the balls to elect a black President then maybe we can also have the balls to start to dismantle the corporate control of our lives, our government, and our political system. Maybe one day we finally have have a government for us, by us.

16. Andrew Sullivan: This Moment

This Moment

Andrew Sullivan 03 Jun 2008

If I needed reassurance that this man is the most formidable force in American politics today, his speech tonight confirmed it. It was shrewd - with an artful positioning on Iraq. It was graceful - with respect for McCain's service and Clinton's tenacity. It was brutal - in turning around McCain's Iraq visit meme to domestic economic woes. It was patriotic - in its evocation of Gettysburg and the Second World War. It was outer-directed: not for Obama the recourse to self-satisfied identity politics of the kind used by the Clintons because they often have nothing else. It was moving. I thought I even saw some suggestions of tears as he remembered his grandmother. It was also rhetorically more powerful than McCain - not by a small amount but by a mile. Put McCain's speech against Obama's - and this was a wipe-out. Not a victory. A wipe-out. Rhetorically, they are simply not in the same league. And if the contrast tonight between McCain and Obama holds for the rest of the campaign, McCain is facing a defeat of historic proportions.

One more thing: with McCain's and Clinton's speeches, you could not forget the politics of it. With Obama, you forgot about that at times. You actually lifted your eyes a little and believed a little and hoped a little.

Yes, he can. And anyone who under-estimates that will regret it.

17. Classless, graceless, shameless, relentless. Pure Clinton.

The Clintons Threaten

Andrew Sullivan 03 Jun 2008

The speech tonight was a remarkable one for a candidate who has lost the nomination, though not remarkable for a Clinton. It was an assertion that she had won the nomination and a refusal to concede anything to her opponent. Classless, graceless, shameless, relentless. Pure Clinton.

Her narcissism requires that she deprive her opponent of a night, or a second, of gratification or attention. And she has now won, in her Bush-like version of reality, 18 million votes. Her invitation for her supporters to email their suggestions to her website is pure theater, a way of keeping herself in the spotlight and maneuvering her delegates to demand a second spot on the ticket. The way she is now doing this - by an implicit threat, backed by McCain, to claim that Obama is an illegitimate nominee if she does not get her way - is designed to humiliate the nominee sufficiently to wound him enough to lose the election.

Either way, she is clearly intent on getting Obama defeated this fall if she is not offered the vice-presidency. And if she gets the veep nod, the way she has gotten it will allow her to argue that a November loss was not her loss. It was his. And she will run again in 2012.

She will not go away. The Clintons will never go away. And they will do all they can to cripple any Democrat who tries to replace them. In the tent or out of it, it is always about them. And they are no longer rivals to Obama; they are threats.

I was suprised to hear this on CNN, formerly known as Clinton News Network.

Jeffrey Toobin: Clinton's Refusal To Concede "Deranged Narcissism"

June 3 Huffington Post

On CNN's election night coverage Tuesday, political analyst Jeffrey Toobin called Hillary Clinton's
refusal to concede the election "deranged narcissism."

Watch Toobin below:

(video at the linked article)

The folks over at The Hotline put together a roundup of other pundits' reaction to Clinton's speech in New York City tonight:

"Well whatever that was, it wasn't a concession speech." -- FNC's Hume

"Clearly, she's trying to position herself, keep her options open." -- NBC's Russert, on HRC's speech (MSNBC).

"If I were Barack Obama, if I heard that speech, I would not be very happy. ... They are living in parallel universes right now." -- CNN's Borger.

"This was a defiant speech, against all the kind of advice that within the Democratic Party gave her" -- Ex-WH adviser David Gergen, on whether he was surprised by Clinton's speech (CNN).

"She did everything but offer Obama the vice presidency" -- GOP strategist Alex Castellanos (CNN)

22. How to drive a stake in the Clinton campaign: DON"T GIVE IT MONEY
I am thinking that Obama shouldn't help Clinton pay off her campaign debt.

If he helps her pay it off, that just puts her in a stronger position.

He was smart to force her to spend spend spend in Pennsylvania, this
inflicted the mortal wound on her campaign, I think.

She has NO intention of helping him anyway, she showed that she is as
classless as they come.

There is NO way that the Clintons will ever act selflessly, nor
do they care about Obama or the Democratic Party. They proved that
tonight, on this most historic night of nights.

This has all been about their insane lust for power and more money.

The Clintons won't honor any promise that they make, or they will build
a very sneeky slimy escape hatch into any agreement they pretend to make.

Bottom line - they can't be trusted, they shouldn't be bargained with,
and he should just let her campaign wither and die, let it starve.

If you pay the black mailer, the hostages will still be killed.
(The blackmailer always kills the hostages).

Instead, isolate the black mailer and send in a team (your message and the democratic leadership) to rescue the hostages (the democratic party).

Otherwise the GOP will overtake the Whitehouse in Nov 2008.

47. OMG Bush congratulated Obama & dramatic death scene on Gilligan's Island

Delusional And Codependent

By: John Cole June 4, 2008 at 8:51 am

According to MSNBC, President Bush has officially congratulated Barack Obama, while Senator Clinton is still holed up in her bunker in NY issuing her list of demands. I watched Clinton’s speech again this morning, and really, delusional and surreal are the only way I can describe it. In fact, since I really can no longer (could I ever? I tried, at least) rationally discuss the Clintons campaign, I will let Dahlia Lithwick take over:

Just finished watching Hillary Clinton’s unconcession speech. I guess we should give her credit for the fact that her supporters now look sufficiently angry to set small brushfires.

***

Unfortunately, I kept thinking of that Gilligan’s Island episode in which Ginger acts out an excruciatingly long and melodramatic death scene.
You keep thinking her every last gasp is really it. But then she keeps rolling around and twitching because she’s been peeking through her fingers all along and knows you’re still watching.

From now on, I am just going to ignore Hillary. She is not the candidate. She lost. The story is not about her, it is about Obama and McCain and winning in November

48. GOP circulates Clinton's criticism of Obama via YouTube on last primary day

No One Could Have Predicted

By: John Cole at Balloon Juice June 3, 2008

This would happen:

Hours before the polls closed Tuesday in the final two Democratic presidential primaries, the Republican National Committee began circulating a video of Hillary Clinton questioning Barack Obama’s qualifications to be commander-in-chief, and acknowledging John McCain has this important presidential credential.

***

“And I think it is imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold. And I believe I have done that. Certainly, Senator McCain has done that. And you will have to ask Senator Obama with respect to his candidacy.”

The RNC posted the video on YouTube early Tuesday afternoon, just as Obama was on the verge of locking up the Democratic nomination and speculation heated up about Clinton being his running mate.

Tonight, South Dakota and Montana Democrats hold the final two contests of the primary season. Obama is expected to secure the support of enough delegates to claim the party’s presidential nomination as early as tonight, and but no later than the end of this week.

An RNC official tells CNN to expect to see more of Republicans highlighting Clinton’s critical comments of Obama as the campaign now turns to the general election phase.

“We will use it repeatedly,” the official said.

Thanks, Hillary!

But then again, she doesn’t care. This is all about her.

Pelosi, Reid, and Dean Will Call for End of Process Tomorrow Morning

One Million Strong 04 Jun 2008

Party leaders will be making a statement tomorrow morning to end the process. Will they recognize Obama as the presumptive nominee?

In the absence of a concession speech from Sen. Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night, top figures in the Democratic Party are set to go public, urging all uncommitted officials to declare their presidential affiliations.

Sources have confirmed that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and an official with the Democratic Governors Association are planning to release a public statement on Wednesday morning requesting that the party close its ranks and prepare for the race against Sen. John McCain.

Strategy Was Based On Winning Delegates, Not Battlegrounds

.....Senior advisers, including Plouffe and delegate specialist Jeffrey Berman, diced the country into 435 congressional districts, the basis for pledged-delegate allocations. They examined each district under different scenarios -- for instance, before and after former senator John Edwards left the race. And they identified quirks that Obama could exploit -- such as the fact that in districts that awarded an even number of delegates, the take was generally split evenly, if the winning margin was kept reasonable.....

Too bad Clinton didn't have a Jeffrey Berman!

We started the Daily News as a way to provide a variety of news, blog and opinion pieces on
the democratic candidate Barack Obama.

Anyone who has tried to participate in the GDP forum knows that it is very difficult to keep a thread, no matter how good - visible. That is part of why we started this news.

This news thread became a daily staple that supporters could go to for updates and to add their own contributions and photos. There have been ups and downs, and we kept going with the news, and I believe that we kept up our moral in the low times, and celebrated our happinesss in the good times.

DUers who support the Democratic nominee are welcome to contribute to this thread.
We encourage those who do not support the nominee to start their own "news" threads.

56. John Cole at Balloon Juice: Rangel says: "we ought to get on with endorsements"

I Almost Feel Bad

By: John Cole June 4, 2008 at 3:56 pm

For Charlie Rangel:

In an interview with ABC News, Rep. Charles Rangel said he thinks it is time for Clinton to publicly clarify what she is doing and allow her supporters to switch their allegiance to Barack Obama.

“Unless she has some good reasons—which I can’t think of—I really think we ought to get on with endorsements (of Obama) and dealing with what we have to deal with… so we can move forward,” Rangel said.

Rangel last spoke with Senator Clinton privately on Tuesday during the day. On Wednesday he took part in a conference call Clinton had with the NY congressional delegation.

Asked why the Senator told supporters Tuesday night that she needed more time to consider her future, Rangel said: “I have no clue.”

In fact, Rangel said he was surprised by last night’s speech.

Rangel has been blind-sided before, during the RFK gaffe fall-out:

Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.), among Hillary Rodham Clinton’s top African-American supporters, was none too pleased with Clinton’s comments this week to USA Today that she has broader appeal with white voters.

The statement was “the dumbest thing she could have said,” Rangel told reporters before a Clinton fundraiser in a midtown hotel ballroom Saturday.

So I guess maybe I don’t feel bad for him after all. Really, the only people who are surprised by Hillary’s behavior last night simply have not been paying attention. I know, I know, I have Clinton derangement syndrome, but does this really surprise people that this is ending this way?
