Goodbye, GD: P!
Edited on Tue Jun-03-08 11:16 PM by Plaid Adder
Based on Skinner's message, I expect I will not have another opportunity to post in GD: P, so I am taking this opportunity to wish everyone well, even the people I have on ignore. (The people who have me on ignore, of course, will not know that I am wishing them well, but there it is.)

We watched Obama's speech tonight--most of it on my partner's computer, which is the only way we could get MSNBC. We tried to watch it on ABC, but in the middle of it they decided to cut away to Stephanopolous yammering. Shut up, Stephanopolous! we cried. We don't want to listen to YOU! There's @#$! history being made! But no, after that it was clips from Clinton's speech, and then more yammering, and then they were about to go to John McCain, and we said, fuck it, let's fire up the Thinkpad again. Broadcast media, 0; series of tubes, 1.

Anyway. Five minutes into it, my partner said, "How could anyone pick McCain over this guy?"

It's true. I can understand picking Clinton over Obama. There were legitimate reasons to do that. Picking McCain over Obama...well, that's going to probably be a very popular pastime amongst the bigot-American community and amongst the 29 percenters...or what is W's approval rating now, 23%? 22%? Anyway, there's a residual core of Americans who will always vote for the Republican and/or the white guy. But for everyone else, well, I think the choice is now clear.

Normally the primary is the easy part and the GE is the real grinder. I'm not saying the GE is going to be easy. But it may well not be as hard as this primary was--and that's because a) the primary was hell on wheels and b) the competition in the GE will not be as tough, though the tricks will of course be dirtier.

As my last exhortation in GD: P, let me say: I hope people will stop swarming all over the remaining Clinton supporters here with demands that they support the nominee. They will either do it or they won't, and bullying accomplishes nothing. I personally am not that worried. It's a long time between now and November, or, heck, between now and August. The contrast between Obama and McCain is only going to get sharper; and I figure most Clinton supporters are not stupid.

Congratulations to everyone who worked for one of these campaigns. No matter what happens now, because of you all, presidential politics will never be the same. And mostly, I mean that in a good way.

yee ha,

The Plaid Adder

will be slapped down hard and GD is already known for being snippy. I recommend a week's vacation in the beautiful sunny lounge.

10. Maybe, maybe not
Normally the primary is the easy part and the GE is the real grinder. I'm not saying the GE is going to be easy. I am looking forward to the Obama/McCain debates, assuming all the moderators don't go stupid again. But as you say, the tricks will be dirtier. It's going to be Obomber the Muslim Terrorist on Limbaugh, Hannity, and Savage every freakin' day now, while the cable newsers will go on and on about Wright and Ayers ("Well, Wolf, it says something about Obama's inability to judge people" or some such crap).

Let's see if we can keep the media honest or, barring that, drunk.

16. some context would be nice
I didn't read Skinner's post.
I didn't listen to Obama's speech (45 minutes after Wisconsin primary was enough for me).
I agree that the DUers should not swarm the Clinton supporters.

17. There's always undecideds
Some of them are going to go for McCain. Unfortunately, that's how McCain will get voters. So, I think we'd better not write McCain off entirely. After all, if anyone should have been written off, it was Bush, and look what happened!
