Talkingpointsmemo: Hillary Backer Vilsack: She Should Concede Defeat After Tuesday
Hillary-Backer Vilsack: She Should Concede Defeat After Tuesday

By Eric Kleefeld - June 2, 2008, 9:45AM

In a blow to any hopes Hillary Clinton might have of continuing the fight for super-delegates after Tuesday, a top supporter is now saying she should admit defeat after the voting is all over.

"It does appear to be pretty clear that Senator Obama is going to be the nominee," said former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack. "After Tuesday's contests, she needs to acknowledge that he's going to be the nominee and quickly get behind him."

If Hillary tries to keep the contest going after the primaries, it seems likely that some of her backers could withdraw their support.

18. Yeah, I was kind of kidding. I think he wants one desperately
but he ain't gonna get one. I think there will be many has-beens that want a spot on the Obama team. Vilsack is simply too far back in line. Plus, Obama doesn't need to bribe Iowans. He already owns us.

19. Owns us?
Or OWES us?

I hope President Obama remembers the first state he won! (Whether or not Senator Clinton acknowledges us!)

:hi:

5. Vilsack gave former Iowan felons the right to vote, and had to fight his legislature to do so.
I will always respect Vilsack for this politically courageous act.

12. And what did you think about his signing the 'English Only' bill?
Or his selling out of his home state in order to get on the short list for Kerry's VP spot? Or his selling out of his home state in order to jump-start his own Presidential campaign? Or how about his creating his PAC and siphoning funds that should have gone to state legislative races (or to the Iowa Democratic Party) so he could fund his very brief and poorly managed Presidential campaign?

:eyes:

There's plenty more....

16. Do not agree with 'English Only' bill or his support for HRC.
How did Vilsack "sell out his home state in order to get on the shirt list for Kerry's VP spot?"

17. He had a choice - ask Kerry to keep the state that jump-started his nomination first in the nation
Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 11:46 AM by Debi
or to be on the short list for VP (if he asked for the help for Iowa he may have lost his shot at VP). Vilsack told folks privately that he 'wasn't going to play that card just yet'. He never 'played the card' - got dumped as the VP choice and the Calendar Commission was created w/out protections for Iowa/New Hampshire.

I know many here are happy that occurred and believe Iowa/New Hampshire should not be first. But if anybody should have been fighting for Iowa - it should have been Iowa's Governor Tom Vilsack.

3. Her continuing after Obama crosses the magic number
will be seen as a slap in the face to the Party. A LOT of people won't like her too much...

Is it sexist to call her childish is she continues? Everything is at this point. :sarcasm:

11. Actually, Vilsack . . .
can read the writing on the wall. He served with a Republican legislature while he was Governor in Iowa. He ended his long shot bid for the presidency for the same reason. Vilsack is a lot of things, but blind is not one of them.

Vilsack has little to offer an Obama administration. Obama is more popular in Iowa than Vilsack is. Other than education, what expertise does Vilsack have? And there are more qualified educational experts to serve in an Obama cabinet.

13. Thanks Broke Dad - I think Vilsack is just looking for a way to go to Denver
It's looking like the Clinton bus won't be headed there.
