How much more will the RW EXTRACT from Obama?
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 07:06 PM by KoKo01
Obama keeps denouncing his CHURCH.and those his CHURCH Invites to SPEAK...but then many of us have gone to churches we had to leave....

So, it's not that I fault him on that...but that he made so many "connections" through that church...that I worry with his renouncing his church and his AIPAC TOTAL Support for ISRAEL that he's being "boxed into a corner" and he keeps giving UP who HE IS...to PANDER to the ECLECTION CYCLE.

This is how the "Establishment Neuter's ALL OUR DEM CANDIDATES"...they go after you with a "thousand cuts" so that there's nothing left once you become President. They did it to Carter and to Clinton for TWO TERMS...when do we Dems stop allowing this to happen.

Obama should not be caving so much...in his interest of Unity...because it will bite him in his butt eventually. The Repugs ALWAYS GET BACK what they've TAKEN FROM DEMS...

I want OBAMA TO STOP THIS! If he caves on EVERYTHING SO SOON...what's Left? When will he throw his LEFT UNDER THE BUS...like Carter and Clintons?

What I ask is: "How much MORE of OBAMA's CORE BELIEFS will he HAVE TO GIVE UP..to satisfy the "Powers that Be?" Should any of us be worried about him now "sporting "Flag Pin" and "Applauding AIPAC and Doug Feith?"

When does OBAMA need to STOP PANDERING TO THE RIGHT...before he LOSES HIS SOUL..and those who are VOTING FOR HIM?

43. No, he left the church because ...
the church wasn't doing it's part ...

he did the right thing and didn't throw them under the bus at the outset ...

Intead of keeping his yap shut, Wright popped off ... Then this knuckhead gave the right wing more red meat with his bizarre rant ...

Not the church's fault, so to speak, but the church didn't do its part in protecting BO simply by not having people open up their mouths and saying stupid A things ...

FRIENDS don't keep doing things that submarine the aspirations of friends ... There may not be intentionality there, but they obviously CANNOT keep people in line ...

62. The church (except RW churches) are there for God not a candidate.
They may love BHO's agenda, but it is not their central organizing tenet.

Their social agenda has political effects and they would be served if there was a political believer in the WH...

ALL TRUE

but sometimes it is not about the man and what is politically feasible.

If there is a political left in this country, then sometimes they have to object even when their favorite folks are voting against everything they believe. The IWA seems to be that for mainstream Democrats.

Why shouldn't a smaller minority subset be counter-political intuitive sense and say to the world, this political process itself is bankrupt?

It is a confrontational stance.
Compromise is the way of politics.

In religious circles, purity is what matters most.

I think the differences in religious politics and national politics runs between purity of belief and the art of compromise.

61. No, he left because the media and Republicans weren't going to let it go.
They wouldn't let the flag pin go.

They won't let their smear of under $50K voter go either.

It doesn't have to be true.

They just need to repeat it.

Capitulating does kill the nominee

67. No. It's pure BS
Just awful.

20-years with Wright... all those clips followed by Wright's foaming at the mouth tour on TV.
...Which brought Obama to denounce and separate himself from someone he said he couldn't only a few weeks earlier.

Now this?
Running from his church of 2 decades.
This reeks of political expediency.
He knew Wright... and his wife even sounds like Wright.
He's tried but he can't play ignorant. It just looks silly.

This is our (tragically flawed)nominee?
Had this been known earlier the party elders should have pulled him aside and said, "hey Obama... clean up your act before thinking about running."

You have to think of how he will play with the swing voters we need.
He's hit all the wrong buttons.
No flag lapel pin.
No hand over heart.
Guns and religion.
God damned America Wright.
Michelle's rantings, and then saying she is somehow to be off the table for discussion.
Telling Americans they can't cool or heat their homes as they like... can't drive as they want... can't eat what they want.

THIS DOES NOT APPEAL TO THOSE WE NEED TO WIN.
Especially considering his Hope, Change, Uniter message.
It rings Hollow.

We're in the process of putting out a Mondale, Dukakis, McGovern type candidate.

Hope everyone will be satisfied with another good kick in the yap.
That's what we've sent out to fight for us.
A toothless tiger who's not good on his feet.

I know... I get the F-off posts, but will I get apologies when we don't win?

You have to play to win, and to have a chance at victory you need a viable candidate...
... not some clueless rookie who keeps stepping in it.

3. Truthfully? He probably needed to "leave" that church a long time ago
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 07:12 PM by SoCalDem
He is NOT about the anger and outrage that seems to come from people associated with the church.. Oprah left it, too.

It suited him as a young man in Chicago, but he's no longer THAT Obama..
I think he may have held onto it because he viewed Wright as a father-figure, and underestimated how he would be used against him..

Technically, once you move away from an area, it's almost impossible to attend a church regularly where you no longer live, so he should have cut the strings when he came to DC..

And as people change, so does their emphasis on religion.. Some get more religious, some less..

The ONE good thing to come from this campaign season, may just be the moving-away from religion as a political issue. I would LOVE to see that happen..

I don't give a CRAP what church a candidate attends..I don't even care if he/she does not attend church..

Mccain doesn't even GO to church, and had to use "rent-a-preacher"...and ended up burned by both he chose..

I'm looking for a leader who says:

"I am a good person who uses the Golden Rule, I have standards, morals, and I do not identify with a particular religion or church building... I attend any church I choose, whenever I choose.."

got married in the presbyterian church, and have only ever been inside a church for funerals & weddings.. Our kids were raised totally outside religion..

As adults one has joined a church he likes, and the other two are just like us..skeptical realists who go by the Golden Rule :)

replaced by their progeny.. I never "bought into" the whole "story" aspect of religion.. I personally see "religion", as a clever storyline created by educated people...long ago... to control poorer-uneducated people, and it "caught on"..

I believe in MYSELF, and my friends & children..I don't feel the need to believe in unknowable mystical philosophies :)

Maybe someay, I'll change my mind, but I doubt it

"we also don't want a church subjected to the scrutiny that a pres. campaign .. undergoes."

Barack Obama quits church after long controversy

BY MICHAEL SAUL NY DAILY NEWS Saturday, May 31st 2008

We don't want to have to answer for everything that's stated in a church," Obama said during a news conference in South Dakota. "On the other hand, we also don't want a church subjected to the scrutiny that a presidential campaign legitimately undergoes."

Obama said he and his wife, Michelle, made the decision to formally sever ties with Trinity with "some sadness." But he said he felt strongly that he didn't want his church experience to be a "political circus."

The senator said specifically that he's "not denouncing the church" because he doesn't believe it's a "church worthy of denouncing."

Father Pfleger's life has been threatened:

Rev. Pfleger: 'They want to kill me'

May 31, 2008 BY DAVE NEWBART Staff Reporter Chicago Sun Times

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, who helped reignite Barack Obama's pastor problems by mocking Hillary Clinton, said this evening he's received "thousands of hate threats" since his videotaped pulpit rant.

"They want to kill me," Pfleger told parishioners during a service in a St. Sabina Church chapel on Chicago's South Side this evening. "It's been very ugly."

The firebrand Catholic Priest made his controversial Clinton comments last Sunday at Trinity United Church of Christ, home church of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's former pastor.

Pfleger mocked Clinton for crying on the campaign trail, and suggested it was "white entitlement" leading Clinton to believe the Democratic nomination should go to her -- not Obama.

...

Pfleger is well beloved in parts of the black community.

"our country continues to kill messengers of honest..."

Father Michael Pfleger: As Patriotic As You Can Get

by Dr. Boyce Watkins

Father Michael Pfleger called me on my cell phone a couple of weeks ago. I was busy, in the middle of something. But when he called, I stopped what I was doing to talk to him. I am not religious, but I know a true man of God when I see one. Michael Pfleger catches heat for being so direct, but I respect him a great deal. He stands tall and strong in the name of God and while there might be those who want to see Pfleger gone, the reality is that there is tremendous truth in what he says.

Anyone who sees Father Michael Pfleger's bio knows that he is serious about seeking fairness and justice in America. He not only pursues racial justice, he pursues AMERICAN justice. If Jesus were in the flesh today, he would be doing similar things. Again, this is a man who walks the walk and will go down in history as one of the greatest pastors ever. In fact, any man who truly does the work of God is going to end up in conflict with the dogma of most churches, the same was true for Jesus.

Those who claim that Pfleger preaches hate don't know a damn thing about what hate really is. If they want to see hate, they only need to look at what their parents, grandparents and great grandparents have done to African Americans since our country was founded. The idea that fighting historical oppression is equivalent to maintaining oppression (i.e. Sean Hannity is the same as Jeremiah Wright) is not only silly, but it is quite revealing of how little racial education an individual has. A daughter who files a lawsuit against the family of the man who raped her mother and stole her belongings is not a thief and rapist herself. As Father Pfleger points out clearly, this government has benefitted from stealing from our ancestors, that is why black people have nothing: we don't own media, we don't own corporations, we don't own universities. That didn't happen overnight. It happened because of racism, and we are forced to deal with these effects every single day.

For those with open minds, I encourage you to listen to Father Pfleger. For those who don't want to listen, just continue bathing yourself in the ignorance inherited from your forefathers who also taught you to ignore the obvious about racism. God bless you Father Pfleger, you are truly my brother. Martin Luther King is smiling from beyond.

11. Father Michael Pfleger seems to be "OVERSTATING" his Death Threats for $$$$$$$$$'s
in my humble opinion. What makes him different from any RW Baptist Fundie or othewise Preacher...raking in the dough?

I saw the You Tube...and snips on CNN/MSNBC.... I was SHOCKED that a Catholic Priest would "adobt the language and cadence of the Black Liberation Church" to get folks into his Parish to get $$$$$$$$'s from BIG DONORS!

What does it say about our Religious that they need to "whore themselves out" pretending to be BLACK EVANGELICALS?

It was disgusting..but, I also know that Catholic Schools and Churches are on the "Auction Block" in the Big Cities of America..and "THE CATHOLIC CHURCH" is VERY WORRIED... So, if they could find a Priest who would "talk like an African-American and do an "outreach to Trinity" then it was GOOD for both Catholic Coffers and United Church of Christ's Coffers.

What worries me as a CHRISTIAN...is that our "beliefs about "what Jesus preached" are being BOUGHT OFF by the MONEY CHANGERS that JESUS warned us AGAINST!

HOW LOW CAN WE GO...when Priests and Protestants TRASH THEIR CONGREGATIONS? AND..posture themselves to reap the BIG BUCKS the RW EVANGELICALS are pulling in?

Seems to me ALL OUR CHURCHES might be in TROUBLE...because as they "lose congregations" to the FIREBRAND PREACHERS...they also lose the rest of us who are now QUESTIONING...SENDING OUR YOUTH AND OTHERS INTO ENDLESS WAR!!!! ENDLESS WAR...FOR WHAT...This IS NOT WHAT JESUS TAUGHT! :nuke:

Obama Supporters: Here's where "they" will attack you.............

KoKo01 Mon Dec-11-06 06:50 PM

This morning on C-Span I, Chicago Tribune's Jim Warren did a whole BIO of OBAMA.

Here's what worried me about it: Obama's second father (Indonesian Investor) seemed to give enough money to his Step-Child for him to attend "Prep Schools" and get into Columbia. When Obama took much time off to work with "activists in Harlem" he then went to Harvard Law School where he was HEAD of "Harvard Review."

Warren said that Obama went to "Prep Schools" in Indonesia and then went to Columbia and after "hiatus" went to Harvard Law.

My QUESTION IS! Where the Hell did Obama get the MONEY to DO THIS? Don't most of us know folks who could QUALIFY for YALE or HARVARD LAW yet don't get the money to do it? How did Obama's mother (single Mom...married twice..manage to get the bucks to do this?}

Warren (who used to be "News Director" for "Chicago Times" before he was put off to the "Features Section" also said that there are "interesting Land Deals with Obama and a Chicago Machine Investor,(linked to Mafia) that could come out if he runs.

Those of you who think OBAMA can't be "Swift Boated" just like Kerry or what happened with "Gore...who didn't Invent the Internet...need to be aware that whatever is in OBAMA's Past WILL COME OUT.

And..I want to know who FUNDED HIS EDUCATION? With a father who went back to Kenya and one who was an Indonesion Investor ...WHO PAID FOR OBAMA's EDUCATION at the FINEST COLLEGES AMERICA has to OFFER?

Shouldn't we examine Obama more before we compare him to JFK and jump on the MEDIA BANDWAGON? Why Shouldn't we?????

40. SHEESH! I was asking WHERE OBAMA GOT MONEY to go to HARVARD and COLUMBIA...
How did his mother afford it? Did he get scholarships and grants due to his mothers ties with Ford Foundation? His grandparents didn't seem to have enough money to fund him to pay for a Harvard/Columbia Education. Do YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THAT COST?

Yet...you claim I inferred that Trinity Ministers were paying for his education? What are you Thinking? There's nothing in that post saying ministers from his church paid for his education AND...you have to understand that I am a Gore/Kucinich supporter so Obama was new to me in December...and I wanted to know where he got his money from to attend colleges that can go over 100,000 for each to attend when he was there...and are even much more today. It's alot of money...(having gone through much punier loans for my own education.) It's not easy for a guy who grew up like he did to pay for all of that. And, I wondered where he got the connections and money to do it.

I voted for him here in NC...so don't go at me that I'm not an Obama supporter...but I'm not one who isn't asking questions until he's the nominee.

profile issue, Father Pfleger, and the Faith Community of Saint
Sabina was admitted into a predominately Caucasian sports league,
that originally denied Saint Sabina into the league. Father Pfleger
withdrew membership from this league because of the strong belief
of racism that was involved. Father Pfleger nor his members wanted
any part of unfair treatment, and unequal rules. Part of the agreement
Saint Sabina wanted to be in place before entering the league is as
follows:

Coaches signing a letter stating that there would not be any
intentional forfeits. (This is a result of constant promises by
coaches to forfeit games at Saint Sabina.)

Equal safety requirements. We will do whatever is desired
from us, but we want the same requirements to be met by the
other churches and schools for our children's safety.

A commitment to deal with the race issue and clearly define
race policies so there are known and defined consequences for
any racial slurs, taunting and/or behavior to avoid the issue
being dealt with individually.

As a minister, Father Pfleger has sought to break down the walls of racism and
denominationalism by building unity among all people founded on truth and based on
Jesus' command to love one another. This holy calling has led him to be a parent, a
preacher, a teacher, a lecturer, and an activist. However, he believes his most important
role is as
"AN 'ERRAND BOY' FOR JESUS!"

20. I cannot say I liked the way Pfleger spoke, or that
he chose to make Hillary part of the sermon- but I do want to point out to you that while you are jumping up and down condemning him and his ..."mother church"- you are also forgetting what Jesus taught.

Jesus told us to look at the logs in our own eyes- before trying to point out the splinters in others. He taught that people were to do good to those who harm us- to give without expecting anything in return, and to treat others as we would like to be treated.

I don't know what motivated Pfleger to say what he did in the way that he did. I appreciate that he had enough humility to apologize- This whole issue is being used by people to advance agendas that have little to do with what Jesus taught.

That "firebrand preacher" Jeremiah Wright spoke firmly- eloquently and clearly against any war with Iraq when few others had the wisdom or courage to do so- He didn't do that for 'big bucks' he did that because he believed that going to war with Iraq was wrong- and he was willing to say publicly.

Pfleger would not be "raking in the dough" as a guest preacher in any UCC I've ever attended. I encourage you to dig a bit deeper and make sure you aren't making statements about people that are based on assumptions and not facts.

I wish you peace~

Wright found his way to ridicule the media when the national press attempted to give him a platform.

Otis Moss gave Father Phleger an additional shot at the political debate.

Obama resigning his membership is not going to keep them out of the spotlight NOW THAT the world is moving to watch what they do.

32. Obama hasn't given up who he is. and AIPAC is afraid of him.
And when he is President, and if the Clinton wing doesn't undermine him,
then he will be free-er to do what needs to be done.

Unlike Hillary Clinton or John McCain, Obama isn't beholden to lobbyiest,
he has over 1.5 million individual donors who are NOT tapped out.

This SCARES AIPAC. They don't like candidates that can't be controlled by
wealthy donors.

Obama had to leave that church or the media would continue to harass the congregation
and the death threats to various pastors would become common place.

Would you rather he retain his membership until some horrible catastrophe occurs?

So what if he wears a flag pin. He's already made his statement about that.
Symbols matter to some people. He knows that. It doesn't change how he feels
about it.

He left his church - any presidential candidate would have to leave a church
that provokes continual controversy. And I say candidate.

You yourself have strongly condemned one of the priests who spoke at Obama's church.

Obama as a candidate has far less power as Obama the elected president of the US.

I saw people claiming to be Clinton supporters on TV saying they would vote for McCain
but I have not ever seen an Obama supporter do or say that.

35. Do you not know that there are Trolls and Limbaugh folks putting that Crap out there?
The only Hillary supporters who are threatening to vote for McCain are "troublemakers" that Rove and Limbaugh/Drudge have out there posting on all the "Liberal Internet ..NEW MEDIA sites."

Why are you so gullible that you believe this? And...even if it were true...how many Clinton supporters can you count that would ever follow through on this threat ...even if they are "reliable, verifiable Democrats who post here on DU or wherever you are seeing what you are posting about.

CRAP...is what I say!

42. Clinton campaign admitted being behind "bitter" stickers in North Carolina
I believe you there are plants, but the Clinton campaign was handing out
"Bitter" stickers in North Carolina, trying to stir people up.

The Clinton campaign admits to being behind this:
http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/04/12/882730.aspx

IT would be great if the Clinton campaign didn't do stuff like this,
it brings out the wrong things in people.

I would like to see a woman president, but Barbara Boxer or someone like
that is more to my liking. She voted AGAINST the war.

45. I voted in Raleigh...and never saw any of that stuff...but I'm not saying
that somewhere in NC there weren't efforts by the RW Evangelist/Limbaugh...creepy elements pushing stuff. I will also say that days before the NC Primary we went over to the Springsteen Concert in Greensboro and took the "long back roads way back" and rode through neighborhoods where there were Obama Signs planted next to Hillary signs in neighborhoods and didn't see any "bitter" bumper stickers or other stuff on cars, in windows or on lawns. Mostly, the area of NC that I live in and that I drove through a few days before the election were peaceful...and I saw few bumpersticker...(none for Hillary and two for Obama) on the Springsteen trip and my riding around all of Raleigh...I saw no bumperstickers for either candidate and definitely no "bitter" anything.

Where are you in NC that you saw all this? I know I'm only in one small corner of this large state...but I just didn't see that stuff.

53. "...In Goldsboro, close observers noticed a (light) smattering of stickers"
IS 'BITTER' STICKING IN NORTH CAROLINA?
Posted: Saturday, April 12, 2008 4:16 PM by Mark Murray MSNBC First Read

...In Goldsboro, close observers noticed a (light) smattering of stickers being worn by attendees. "I'm not bitter!" read the simple rectangular label on the lapels of a couple dozen in the crowd. The campaign says that the stickers are evidence of outrage at the grassroots level.

Yet it's unclear how spontaneous the sentiment was. A boxful of the stickers was spotted at Clinton's first event of the day -- being whisked backstage.

*** UPDATE *** The Clinton campaign in NC takes responsibility for the stickers, per a campaign aide, but says that the idea originally came from a volunteer.

Stickers have been distributed by volunteers -- given a "green light" by staff -- at four of Bill Clinton's events yesterday.

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/04/12/882730.aspx

There's no reason to believe this was limited to Goldsboro, and it did make national news

36. THANKS...I missed that post from Poster who was Concerned like me about this...
I don't want OBAMA to be compromised before he even get's to the CONVENTION! What will be left of him? some kind of neutering. That's why I posted. You cannot "give away everything" without the RW OWNING YOU!

He needs to "lighten up" and get back on track with those who are funding him as "small donors" who don't want to see him cave to every absurd RW Thing that's thrown at him.

Let the RW deal with their own "ailing candidate" who doesn't even seem to get any facts or figures correctly and seems very "out of touch" with the American Voters. Obama doesn't need to pander to Bush or McSame. :-(

59. I think it should never have been made an issue
If he hadn't made such a big deal of 'his religion' it would not have been a legitimate issue. He chose to make himself out to be a good Christian and since his church differs from the right wing religiously insane churches, it is easy to paint it as a liability.

The essential point is .... Keep Religion Out of Politics or Be Prepared to Stand Tough

Third Clinton Volunteer Knew Of Smear E-Mail

A third volunteer for Hillary Clinton's campaign was aware of a propaganda e-mail alleging that Barack Obama is a Muslim who plans on "destroying the U.S. from the inside out. "Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential Candidacy," the email reads. "Please forward to everyone you know. The Muslims have said they Plan on destroying the U.S. from the inside out, what better way to start than at The highest level."

Two Clinton volunteers, Linda Olson and Judy Rose, have already been asked to resign from the campaign for their roles in forwarding the e-mail. The AP reported yesterday that Olson, a volunteer coordinator in Iowa County, sent a version of the e-mail to 11 people, including Ben Young, a regional field director for Chris Dodd's campaign. Young passed it on to the AP.

Kerrey Apologizes to Obama Over Remark
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=4031436
Kerrey's mention of Obama's middle name and his Muslim roots raised eyebrows because they are also used as part of a smear campaign on the Internet that falsely suggests Obama is a Muslim who wants to bring jihad to the United States.
Obama is a Christian.
The Clinton campaign has already fired two volunteer county coordinators in Iowa for forwarding hoax e-mails with the debunked claim. Last week, a national Clinton campaign co-chairman resigned for raising questions about whether Obama's teenage drug use could be used against him, so Kerrey's comments raised questions about whether the Clinton campaign might be using another high-profile surrogate to smear Obama.

Where did I mention "You"? What does Clinton have to do with this? Her staff is involved in emailing this shit, and gets caught in one instance, and you think that Clinton has nothing to do with this? So who made Obama's 'religion' an issue? As far as my shutting the fuck up. No.

39. God is portable.
I don't have a problem with his decision.

It was a personal decision to be made, and he made it.

He didn't need to be hamstrung every time anyone opened their mouth over there at Trinity. He said that he had been thinking about leaving anyway....and so he has left. I believe it is best for both the church and himself.

Church is not where God lives; he lives in the heart of those who believe.

Give a person some privacy on this.....instead of judgment.

This church issue was not a wise battle to fight.....because the battle should be about healthcare, jobs, corporate swindlers and War and peace....and not about distractions.

Obama's battle cannot be about his church. That is not the battle that most of us want to see fought. Get it?

52. Obama needs to know that the RW and Media Pundits for the "Powers that BE"
will push and push...and it started with "wearing the flag pin" and it will never stop. They are testing to see how far they can push him. They do it will all our Dem Candidates...and then they trash them with slander. I don't like to see Obama caving too much to them...so early on. Some is necessary like with Reverent Wright...and now that Catholic Priest...but caving to wear a "Flag Pin" was something he shouldn't have done.

Watch and see ...they will find more and more to force him into their way of thinking. He needs at some point to understand he has done enough...he should not give away anymore...because he will be a hollow suit if he keeps caving to them.

56. But Obama HAS NOT denounced that place. Why do you think he has?
In fact, he went out of his way to say (yesterday!) that he will never denounce the church, only that he denounces remarks made in the pulpit. That's going to be a huge problem for him, and it ensures that the story isn't going away.

Leaving the church was a purely political decision. He couldn't take the heat, and had to leave.
