Former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York not only went through $58 million of other people’s money in his failed presidential bid. He’s also facing $3 million in campaign debt. And that is after he put $500,000 of his own money into his losing effort to win the Republican nomination — a campaign that ended shortly after his Florida-focused strategy failed.
Mr. Giuliani now might have to go hat-in-hand to supporters to pay off the $3.1 million he owes to a raft of creditors, unless he wants to cover those expenses himself. The debt was revealed in filings with the Federal Election Commission.
The creditors include Tuaghannock Aviation ($220,307); Verizon Wireless ($295,093); A.T.& T. ($118,744) and another $113,695 to his media consultant, Chris Mottola. Mr. Giuliani also owes money to his own company, Giuliani Partners –- some $65,878 for rent and $151,643 for bodyguards and security.
In all, Mr. Romney raised $60.2 million and spent $104.8 million and has more personal debt than any other candidate, Democrat or Republican, in this race. Mr. Romney, who holds a Harvard M.B.A. and had a reputation as an astute businessman, has also given back $4.9 million to general election donors, according to federal filings.
