National Sales Tax should be a campaign issue
This link was actually posted on another thread (that I can't find):

http://www.ncpa.org/edo/bb/2004/20040809bb.htm

It links to an article that strongly attacks the sales tax proposal being floated in the House. The website appears to be a Republican moderate site in tone, but the author of the article writes for the conservative townhall.com and was a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation.

Now that Hastert and Bush floated the idea of a national sales tax, I think Democrats would be well-served to promote some of the ideas in the article and blast Bush, Hastert, and all those Republicans who signed onto any national sales tax legislation. The Repugs are clearly considering this idea, which would be absolutely awful for anyone who's poor or middle class.

1. This makes it very obvious
what the entire Reagan/Dubya/GOP tax agenda has always been: pushing the tax burden down to the middle class and working poor. I don't think any Democrat should run for office without pointing out the real effect of Bush's tax cuts in those terms.

2. Dont worry about the national sales tax
The Chimpster flip flopped in record time:

Yesterday:

President Bush said on Tuesday that abolishing the U.S. income tax system and replacing it with a national sales tax was an idea worth considering.
"It's an interesting idea," Bush told an "Ask President Bush" campaign forum here. "You know, I'm not exactly sure how big the national sales tax is going to have to be, but it's the kind of interesting idea that we ought to explore seriously."

Today:

Administration officials on Wednesday denied that President Bush is considering a national sales tax, a day after the Republican incumbent created a stir by calling such a tax "an interesting idea that we ought to explore seriously."
