1. I don't get your point. Are you trying to suggest the Decemberists were the draw rather than Obama?
Edited on Thu May-22-08 08:11 AM by soonerhoosier
The fact that you posted this in GDP and that you refer to "concerts with 75,000 attending" would seem to suggest so.

In fact, it made me wonder whether Rush Limbaugh or some other wingnut was pushing that talking point, so I did some Googling and found that, sure enough, Newsbusters was pushing that line.

That the Decemberists are not currently on tour is surely not your point, is it?

Hey, I'd love to see them. But as to that other nonsense... wouldn't the crowd have dwindled significantly if a large number of people ONLY came to hear the Decemberists? There may have been a few people who only came for the music, but it seems to me that most people willingly stayed to hear Obama.

I was lucky enough to see Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds perform in my hometown when they played in support of Barack. There were 13,500 in Indiana University's Assembly Hall. As I was standing in the long line to get in, a student behind me said to a friend "Obama would not draw a crowd this big." Pffft. He came a few weeks later and there were about the same number in the same venue. Bill and Hillary had appeared in Assembly Hall separately. Obama drew 50% more than the two of them combined and won our county with 65% in the primary.

2. How'd that vote turn out in Oregon? Did the Decemberists win, or did Obama kick Hillary's ass?

10. there were threads yesterday accusing the press of lying about the crowd being there for Obama
that they, in fact, came for a rare, free concert by the Decemberists.

7. I hadn't seen those previous posts, but figured this was flamebait.
The OP was just so poorly written that I wasn't sure.

6. "The Who" are in awe and U-2 is making calls to the *mighty* management of this mega-band.
How many platinum albums? :rolf: :spray:

8. Please don't pick on the Decembrists
I've never even heard their music and I'm not in their generation by a long shot, but I do know what smaller bands go through. My son is in a band that manages to tour around the country without really quitting their day jobs. Believe me it's not easy. It's not their fault that the RW decided to pretend that The Decembrists were a big draw. It's a long hard slog to get booked in those 1,000 seat venues. Bands like that know when they're being talked about on the web. Searches, alerts, etc. tell them about it. Stuff like this hurts. Belittling them because someone that they have nothing do with was using them to belittle Obama isn't fair. I know no one means any harm, but hey, support live music. It's not their fault.

9. no one is making fun of the Decemberists, its snark on those who say
that Portland didn't show up for Obama, but for the opening band, and they just happened to stay for the speech.

16. I understand that
And I can see what kind of draw they have and all that. I just feel badly for bands.

18. As I said in a previous thread
The Decemberists typically play small theaters and ballrooms that hold roughly a thousand people.

They don't sell out stadiums like The Stones or Springsteen.

The whole meme of 75,000 coming to see them instead of Obama is ludicrous. If true, then campaign appearances featuring John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews would have drawn even more.

The Decemberists ain't that big.

11. So...your point is that the Decemberists aren't touring now? They're probably working
on their next album. If it's anywhere near as good as The Crane Wife, I'll buy it the day it's out.

12. They sold out Hollywood Bowl twice last summer.
So they are hardly that local band that plays covers at proms and homecoming dances.

This whole topic is silly and has been beaten to death.

13. could it be that the Decembrists used Obama to get their name out?
I am betting millions of folks who had never heard of them before have now heard of them.

19. Ok, I had to leave right after posting this. My point was..
that I have never heard of Decemberist, and don't believe they were the reason for the large crowd. If they had been, IMO, you would have seen a lot of people leaving during Barak's speech. This is not flame bait or a knock on Decemberist, I went looking for their tour schedule thinking I might check them out.
