Republican leaders attempt to drive a wedge between Barack Obama and Jewish voters

> Posted by Mark Hollis at 6:40 PM

State Rep. Adam Hasner, R-Boca Raton, today led a Republican Party attack on Barack Obama’s scheduled visit Thursday to a synagogue in south Palm Beach County. Hasner, the Florida House majority leader, told reporters in a telephone conference call that Jewish support for Republicans is gaining. He also said there’s “an increasing number of Jews who are skeptical of Obama.”

Hasner is Jewish. Obama plans a town hall meeting at noon Thursday at the B’nai Torah Congregation west of Boca Raton. The congregation serves an area that backed Hillary Clinton over Obama by a 2-to-1 margin in Florida’s Jan. 29 presidential primary.

“It’s pretty clear that a good many Jewish voters have serious reservations about voting for Senator Obama,” Hasner said. “Otherwise, the Democrats wouldn’t be working so hard to defend their base. (South Florida) is a Mecca for Jewish Democratic voters. If everything was good, they wouldn’t be here on the defensive with (U.S. Rep.) Robert Wexler walking Senator Obama around.”

State Democratic Party leaders quickly refuted Hasner’s estimate of a groundswell of Jewish support for Republicans. A spokesman for the Democrats called Hasner remarks “a fib,” and state House Democratic Leader Dan Gelber, D-Miami Beach, who is Jewish, said the assertions are “dead wrong.”

Meanwhile, Hasner said he’s received telephone calls in recent days from members of the B’nai Torah Congregation who have expressed opposition to the Illinois senator’s visit. One is Ed Kone, a Boca Raton trial attorney who attends the synagogue regularly. He’s also a Republican. “There’s a lot of places where (Obama) can speak,” Kone said. “He should not be brought into the synagogue, and his message rammed down everybody’s throats." Kone described Obama’s stances on various issues as “anti-Israeli” and said that Obama “clearly has a Jewish problem.”

Josh Earnest, Obama's top campaign spokesman, said Obama is hardly anti-Israel.

6. That's troubling
Jews voted 80% for Kerry. I hope Obama can improve on those numbers, because I just don't see why any of my fellow Jews would even think about McCain.
