G.O.P. Plans Spectacle to Jazz Up Convention
By MICHAEL SLACKMAN

Published: August 10, 2004
When the curtain goes up on the Republican National Convention on Aug. 30, the supporting cast will include gospel- and country-music performers, elaborate videos, and celebrities doing what they can to help market President Bush's ideas and vision for America, one of the convention's organizers said yesterday.

But the convention will present not only politicians and celebrities on each of its four days. People from around the country have been invited to offer an invocation or benediction or to make some other short statement, said Frank Breeden, the convention's director of entertainment, who called this aspect of the program "Preachers and Patriots."

The Republicans are hoping that their convention, in New York, can help give their candidate the significant bounce in the polls that eluded the Democratic challenger, Senator John Kerry, after the convention in Boston. And so the party hired Mr. Breeden, a former president of the Gospel Music Association renowned in the Christian music industry, to help produce a show that carefully weaves the party's political message with a mix of music, star power and patriotic symbolism.<snip>

He said yesterday that he expected the convention to be heavy with gospel, country and Broadway music, and with patriotic music. He said there would be several renditions of the national anthem as well. And he said there would be a stage band made up entirely of some of the most sought-after studio musicians in New York City. Everyone is being paid union wages, he said.<snip>

2. How many times will we hear "God Bless the USA"
by that country singer, what's his name? I liked that song when it was first released and then it got co-oped by the GOP and I can't stand to hear it anymore. It was played at a Fourth of July celebration and I cringed.

3. That helps him with His Rabid Base
But does nothing to reach out to moderate or independent voters.

5. Preachers and Patriots..in NYC..
that don't go well in NYC. If there's one thing New Yorkers know; don't mix politics and religion. The GOP is putting a religious face to the televised GOP convention, but behind the doors they are holding over 400 parties. They must be hiding the liquor, dirty dancing and low cut dresses of their kkkristian women.

I like the line 'hired actors.' No real actors support little bush.

6. Slanted article hypes Hatriot Fest
After all the networks were telling us how 'boring' the conventions are. And how they just can't show them or their ratings will suffer we get this clown's headline. Totally unsubstantiated in the article that follows. A better headline: "GOP betting on blind faith"

{sarcasm} For balance we also get this one sentence paragraph:
Recently Bruce Springsteen and some other high-profile musicians announced a national tour to help defeat President Bush. He apparently couldn't think of anyting more to say about that. Couldn't name any more of the high profile acts. It would undercut his message: WATCH THE GOP CONVENTION

I notice he tucks this in: can help give their candidate the significant bounce in the polls that eluded the Democratic challenger, Senator John Kerry -- Wrong

Blatant propaganda.

7. I hope they let the Religious Reich on the stage to spew hateful venom
Please let all those wingnuts on stage. Please have them say "God" every other sentence. Please have them show pictures of aborted fetuses.

Please let the GOP Convention prove that the Republican Party has been taken over by religious zealots, homophobic neocons and chickenhawk draft dodgers.

8. Gospel is "Save a horse ride a Cowboy"
Lordy, lordy country music is so wholesome! Read the lyrics (hell the title alone) to this popular song. It's like a parody in extreme of everything Christian is this what born again is all about?

9. They're still harping on that stupid "bounce"
Geez, I expected better from the NYTimes which doesn't play into the FoxNews "Memo of the day" rhetoric.
