For those who say Hillary has more chance of beating McCain than Barack...
Edited on Tue May-20-08 05:52 PM by PlanetBev
I saw a poll (can't remember which one) that stated that seven percent of Americans wouldn't vote for a black man for POTUS and eight percent won't vote for a woman. In 2000, six percent of the people in this country stated that they'd never vote for a Jew.

I hope I'm wrong about these figures. Does anyone have any different statistics?

The horrible truth is, a whole generation of asshats have to die off before we become a color-blind, non-sexist nation, or at least closer to it. We'll always have bigots in this country, but with the generations born post 1970, maybe we'll have less of them. I was born in 1950, and I know there's more than a few idiots in my generation as well.

5. Sadly, I agree.
As a fella born in '43, I don't see anything even CLOSE to the sexism and racism in my peers that I've seen in those both older and younger than us ... and I've been around enough to have a fairly well-grounded perspective on that, too.

3. I think there is a huge divide between those born in the 30s and those born in the 40s
Edited on Tue May-20-08 05:54 PM by Oregonian
Those born in the 30s, who are generally in their 70s, were already fully functioning adults when the cultural revolution of the '60s started. My mother is of this generation, and I find I tend to have a much harder time relating to people her age than I do people in their 60s, who were quite young when the age of the Beatles, civil rights struggles, ecology, and the women's movement came around.

6. Take Samuel Alito, for instance, famous asshat of my generation
I can't believe he is only seven months older that I am. I look at him and think, "Jesus Christ, didn't this guy ever own a roach clip?"
