My response to Hillary supporters crying sexism: BOO HOO HOO.
I am sick of it. Hillary lost. Her idiot advisor Penn did not even know that delegates were proportionally divided. He figured Hillary's win of California would net her all the delegates and therefore she would win the whole damned thing on Super Tuesday. That is only the beginning of the flagrant mistakes her campaign made.

Is there sexism in this world? Of course. Did sexism cost Hillary some votes? Absolutely. Did racism GAIN Hillary some votes? Damned straight. It seems to me that any cry of sexism can be matched with a cry of racism. For every Tweety remark you cite, I'll raise you a Pat Buchanan. Both Obama and Hillary had to deal with some of that riff raffe. The difference is Obama didn't try to use it to his advantage: he never said Hillary was having trouble with the male vote the way she talked about the "hard working white Americans", a truly despicable and regrettable comment. He hasn't trotted out his supporters to whine about "rampant racism" in this country. That is not who Obama is.

The truth is the racism scares me more than the sexism, and I say that as a woman. Here in Georgia, we've had an ugly episode:

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/cobb/stories/2008/05/13/mulligans_0514.html

And the KKK is getting in the act of talk of hate and violence:

http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/377721/

That is what Obama has to put up with in the space of a week. Let me know when a hate group predicts Hillary's death. Only then will I begin to take your whining seriously.

CLINTON STAFFERS CIRCULATE 'DRESSED' OBAMA
Mon Feb 25 2008 06:51:00 ET

With a week to go until the Texas and Ohio primaries, stressed Clinton staffers circulated a photo over the weekend of a "dressed" Barack Obama.

The photo, taken in 2006, shows the Democrat frontrunner fitted as a Somali Elder, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya.

The senator was on a five-country tour of Africa.

"Wouldn't we be seeing this on the cover of every magazine if it were HRC?" questioned one campaign staffer, in an email obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT.

In December, the campaign asked one of its volunteer county coordinators in Iowa to step down after the person forwarded an e-mail falsely stating that Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe quickly accused the Clinton campaign Monday of 'shameful offensive fear-mongering' for circulating the snap.

Clinton campaign manager Maggie Williams responds: "If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed."

Developing...

66. ahem... the sad story of HRC & Drudge:
http://gawker.com/360385/obama+in+dress-photo-backfires-on-clinton

A photo of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama wearing sort of an apron-looking thing and a funny turban? A Hillary Clinton staffer asks (according to Drudge): "Wouldn't we be seeing this on the cover of every magazine if it were HRC?" Uh, sure. Sure we would. The photo, from 2006, shows Obama "fitted as a Somali Elder, during his visit to Wajir, a rural area in northeastern Kenya." It was sent around by Clinton's press office (once again, according to Drudge) this weekend, in an apparent attempt to prove that the Illinois Senator is a Muslim terrorist who wears a dress. Mischievous Matt Drudge gave the story an amusing anti-Clinton spin. Because his relationship with her is complicated.

Back when Hillary was inevitable and unstoppable, Mr. Drudge seemed rather pleased. "I need Hillary Clinton. I need to be part of her world. That's my bank," he famously announced. Clinton's camp, perhaps not sufficiently wary of the man who nearly took down her husband, reached out by appointing former DNCer Tracy Sefl their unofficial Drudge emissary.

But Drudge, who enjoys being convinced of his importance, dislikes being portrayed as manipulatable. Shortly after the New York Times brought the world the story of how Matt and Hil are sitting in a tree, the Drudge Report reverted back to its traditional "merciless smearing of that Clinton harridan" mode, with the photos of Hil becoming even more grotesque and unflattering than ever before, the most pointless anti-Clinton stories suddenly getting major play, and the treatment of Obama remaining surprisingly even-handed.

Which, perhaps, explains this story, the clearest proof yet that if Clinton's campaign hasn't yet removed Ms. Sefl from the Drudge beat, they really ought to. Drudge, handed a hilarious photo of a Democratic politician, one that he could play as proof that this politician was un-American or too "different" or "foreign" to be president (a media narrative portions of the Right have been trying to push as Obama surges), turns it into a story of Hillary Clinton's inept and straw-grasping team. He even includes a cute little "EDITOR'S NOTE" explaining that "other leaders have worn local costumes," which he follows with hilarious pictures of Hillary, G.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton looking like ponces in wacky clothes. Amazing.

This is why the allegations of sexism against Obama are extremely suspect to me. If Hillary Clinton had run a superior campaign and lost the nomination in spite of it, that would have been one thing. Instead, she employed an incompetent as her chief strategist and didn't fire him even after his "strategy" was a proven loser, and even after it was clear he had no idea what the fuck he was doing.

election was essentially rigged due to sexism -- a total bogus claim with no evidence to back it up -- I'm going to speak up. I don't take orders from Barack Obama. And this is not said to ALL Clinton supporters. This is for Clinton supporters who are lying about sexism being rampant, that Obama was sexist, and that all of this had sunk her campaign. of it all. Clinton has reaped her just rewards for her awful campaign, her arrogance, her petulance and her negativity.

It's not that she's a woman; it's that she's the WRONG WOMAN.

And BTW, though sexism and racism have long histories in this country, when have 'uppity' women had to endure actual lynching? Some may say it's not a contest, but as a black woman over 50, my experience has been that racism is worse.

37. Hillary disingenuously said she doesn't think racism has played a role in the presidential campaign.
"…I believe this campaign has been a groundbreaker in a lot of ways. But it certainly has been challenging given some of the attitudes in the press."

Clinton, who is banking on a large win in Kentucky Tuesday to keep her presidential hopes alive, also said she doesn't believe racism has played a role in the presidential campaign. But the New York senator said sexist attitudes among voters and members of the media have been a constant detriment to her White House hopes.

Speaking with supporters on a Friday conference call, Clinton said she regretted that many of them have faced sexist attacks.

"I deeply regret the vitriol and the mean-spiritedness and the terrible insults and rhetoric that has been thrown around at you for supporting me, at women in general, at many of those who support my campaign because of who they are and their stand based on principle," she said. "I don't have time for their insults, I'm impervious to them."

38. This must be the Obamabot talking point of the day:
deny sexism.

What happened to kool-aid, latte drinkers, elitist, cultist and all the rest? I guess that stuff must be too last week.

It's nice to see you all on the same page with your talking points.

Of course some of us will never except that near-worship and constant slandering of the opposition is necessary in a primary campaign. Some of us are still silly enough to think we can come to DU for some honest give and take. I guess those days have passed.

never were. Hello?

56. Hello yourself.
Go to the main page, or go to GD: P and scan the titles of the posts. Look at how many of them are whining about Clinton for daring to broach the subject of sexism. Of course this can be viewed as a coordinated effort by Obama supporters. And the kind of Obama supporters I see here every day deserve to be insulted. There are only a few exceptions to that.

58. Daring to broach the subject of sexism? On the contrary,
Clinton has been exploiting that topic for months and today, lol, hilariously by accusing Obama of sexism all over the cable shows. What a disgrace she and her surrogates are to the women's movement.

Calling out bullshit is not whining, it's a reality check.

70. LOL. Unfortunately I am not one of the head minions of the Obamabot Nation
and was not given the talking point: I did something radical -- I came up with it ALL BY MYSELF. I know, I know, I mike a lousy cultist, what thinking my own thoughts and all ....

40. That's because sexism isn't considered as bad as racism...
women are beaten, raped and murdered at a much higher rate than men. There are plenty of very ugly episodes with women being the victim. Derogatory statements about women are more widely accepted...even by women, too. It's incorporated in the very fabric of our society to such a degree that most of it is considered normal by most people. Sexism is insidious and should be condemned to be as bad as racism...and as dangerous.

Sexism should scare you. Look at those women in the FLDS compound and their children. Read the statistics of women being raped, beaten and murdered. Look at how women have been treated for reporting being raped. There are women who are stoned to death for adultery, who are forbidden to vote or to drive.

Racism is repugnant and should not be tolerated by anyone in society at all. There is no disputing that. But after seeing how women have been treated, and how widely accepted it is throughout societies all over the world...it should be considered repugnant and a throwback to ancient days when women were considered second class citizens.

Sexism should scare everyone.

55. All those things are true. And sexism hasn't been nearly as exploited
to manipulate the electorate this year as racism has. The claims FOR THIS YEAR are not equal and it's just dishonest to say so.

Obama never said a block of voters wouldn't vote for Hillary because she is a woman, even though he'd probably have been technically correct.

The Clintons, on the other hand, started to race bait as soon as Obama started making gains in the contest.

And that's the main difference between these candidates.

60. But the fallacy is conflating our cultural sexism with the Obama campaign.
I've defended her in many venues on the one; the other is bullshit.

And today, her campaign decided to call sexism as a last resort. That's so disgusting. It's demeans the women who today really are suffering discrimination that Clinton will never experience.

Sexism played a role. It helped Hillary get votes. Sexism played a role in helping Hillary get the votes of voters like you.

72. Okay, so you just swore at me. I just want to get this straight:
You are claiming that sexism sunk Hillary's campaign (purportedly from Obama & his supporters), not, for example, Penn not knowing that Hillary winning California would not net her all the delegates? Sorry, I don't buy it. This whole "outrage" regarding this primary season is completely manufactured. There is no way Hillary lost more sexist votes than Obama lost racist votes. They cancelled each other out, with the exception of Appalachia where there racist vote was a larger percentage. So then that leaves you with each campaign. Obama's campaign was run better. His message was better. His organizing was better. His internet networking fundraising model was better. There are reasons why he has won the majority of pledged delegate.

63. My response to you: get over yourself.......
Why is racism so much more important to you than sexism?

You trivialize sexism, whom are you trying to impress?

You know, it's OKAY to identify with the girls ever now and again. It's rather painless, doesn't hurt the environment and so what if one or more guys on this planet can't handle it. One doesn't have to live for their approval 24/7, dear. :sarcasm:

78. What in the hell does the OP have to do with getting the approval of men?
Edited on Wed May-21-08 06:34 AM by WildEyedLiberal
Obviously, in your world, any woman who opposes Clinton and who thinks that she has been milking accusations of "sexism" to deflect from her own poor performance is just a self-hating doormat dominated by "men" (what men? Please be more clear. Men on DU? Their husbands? Obama?)

Your post is exactly what's wrong with Hillary-style "feminism" - "identifying with the girls" becomes paramount over EVERYTHING else, including issues, campaign tactics, reality, or truth. You are voting for Hillary to "identify with the girls" and/or "stick it to the men." ANY woman > ANY man. Sorry, that's not "feminism," that's blind identity politics. That you fail to allow for strong, freethinking women to not support a woman candidate is an insult to women and the women's movement everywhere. Feminism is about having freedom, choice, and opportunity, not some ridiculous treehouse "OMG girls rule boys drool" club.

71. Big Girls Don't Cry
nor do they snivel about perceived injustices. They put on their big girl pants and suck it up. Hillary isn't very good at doing that. Neither are her enablers.
