2. According to a poll I was just reading here on DU, Hillary has lost
8 points with Hispanic voters.

Puerto Ricans are of mixed ancestry, similar to Obama's (Spanish instead of White). I'm not sure why they would, apart from the fact that Obama is a superior candidate, want to support the White Lady that succeeded beyond her wildest dreams in making race an issue in this campaign, once they think about it.

5. I have been waiting for weeks to hear some more about..
puerto rico. I thought that Puerto Ricans were Hispanic and Black ancestry not that it has to do with anything. I just want to know why she is so adamant that she is winning there...

30. There's a large black population in PR too.
The last polls I saw for PR had Clinton ahead by like 20 points but they were from more than 2 months ago.

6. Interesting how Hillary would probably love to count Puerto Rico in the popular vote total, but
she loves to discount the popular vote caucus states like Washington, Nebraska, and Iowa. Puerto Rico can't even vote in the November election.

Think about that for a second and you will see how desperate her failing campaign actually is. It's so pathetic.

8. Jesse Jackson won the Puerto Rico primary in 1988 ...
though the corrupt politicians there gave all the delegates to Dukakis anyway. Does suggest they will support a black candidate though.

10. PR is on the whole a bit less 'hooked in' to Federal politics, since it has a very rich, vibrant
political life of its own, with its own parties, candidates, and internal issues. Incumbency therefore carries a greater weight.

12. You took the words right out of my mouth. Also our governor is in deep shit
, so people are paying a lot of attention to that. Bill Clinton was always liked in the island. Even though he weaseled out out on the whole Vieques situation.

Edited on Tue May-20-08 03:14 PM by featherman
mode and PR doesn't vote in the GE?

I think he should but I thought he should have gone harder after the Louisville-Lexington-Covington vote in KY also so what do I know?

20. I think it is possible.
She could lose PR for one simple reason. Language. Hilary has said she has no knowledge of any foreign language. On the other hand, Obama does have a basic knowledge of Spanish. He once delivered the Democrat's weekly radio address in Spanish. I don't think he is fluent, but he definitely knows more than Hillary does.

This of course all depends on whether or not he campaigns there, which he may not due because he is going into GE mode.

21. My Puerto Rican theory
The upper-class in Puerto Rico votes. The upper-class tends to be pro-US corporation because they tend to work for the US multinational corporations that have located in Puerto Rico to take advantage of the benefits of Puerto Rico being a US territory and not a state.

Another of the classic tax avoidance games that multinational companies play is illustrated by a tax break that goes to the many drug companies and electronics firms that have set up subsidiaries in Puerto Rico. They assign "ownership" of their most valuable assets--patents, trade secrets and the like--to their Puerto Rican operations, and then argue that a very large share of their total profits is therefore "earned"in Puerto Rico and therefore eligible for the tax break. Reforms in 1986 tried to scale back this tax dodge, but it still costs more than $3 billion annually. Although encouraging jobs in Puerto Rico might be a nice idea(although perhaps not at the expense of mainland employment), it has been estimated that many of the Puerto Rican jobs cost the Treasury upwards of$70,000 a year each because the tax break is so abused.

Ninety percent of the industry of Puerto Rico is United States-owned. Capital-intensive, highly mechanized petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries provide few jobs, pollute the atmosphere and insure tax-free profits under Internal Revenue Code section 936 to United States corporations.

There is no middle-class in Puerto Rico and the lower-class does not vote.

25. I think there was one poll a while ago that showed her with a 13 point lead
Not as bad as I would have expected, but it was taken a while ago.

I don't think Hillary has been there...Bill was there a few weeks ago.

I think it's expected to go for Hillary because it's Hispanic and a lot of Puerto Ricans live in NY.

32. Didn't I read somewhere on DU
That PR changed its rules from proportional to winner-take-all for the primaries? Either way, I figure PR to be a 20 point win for Hillary for the simple reason of the Clintons name and popularity, as well as the number of paisanos living in NY.
