Do they do exit polls for Oregon? There are plenty of blue collar workers in the state
and it would be nice if we could show they voted for Obama...but I can't figure out how they would do exit polling unless they ask people who drop off their ballot today. Are there enough who do that to get a good sample?

Andrew Sullivan made the point yesterday that Oregon and Kentucky have the close to the same median income and number of blue collar jobs. So if that point could be made in Oregon (usually by exit polls), then it could stop some of the talk that Obama can't win blue collar workers. Here's what Andrew Sullivan's article said:

"Another nugget from that Patrick Healy story. He describes Oregon as a "largely, white, affluent state", compared with Kentucky which is regarded as "working class". But when you look at the census data, the similarities are as striking as the differences. Male median income in Oregon: $41,536; Kentucky: $39,595; Female median income in Oregon: $32,390; Kentucky: $29,392. Oregon is slightly more prosperous than Kentucky, but its share of blue collar jobs is not far off Kentucky's. These caricatures are part of the Clinton camp's bid to keep a certain line in the public mind. They deserve complicating, not reinforcing."

1. Exit polling will be tough
seeing that most people mail in their ballots.

3. They vote entirely by mail
Edited on Tue May-20-08 08:41 AM by Upton
according to polls released yesterday some 3/4 had already mailed or dropped off their ballots. I don't see how they could get any kind of representative exit polls.

4. The whole demographic focus is a sham. It's just a wayt to divide us, to slice and dice us.
I attended "Camp Obama" here in Montana, a two day intensive volunteer training program and the largest demographic in attendance was women over 45.

at our twice weekly phone banking, again, the largest demographic is women over 45.

What does that prove? It proves that one shouldn't believe everything they see on TV, in fact they should be skeptical about what they see on TV.

The exit polls showed that both Al Gore and John Kerry won the Presidency, remember? Yet some how they didn't.

I agree that the media can shape perceptions. But only if people buy into the media.

5. Although, ... it is public record whether or not you voted (but not how you voted), so ...
seems to me it would be pretty easy to do exit polling by going down the list and calling those who have voted.

And yes, in an election where there is large turnout, such as this one, there will be a great many people who hand-carry their ballots to their county elections office, so you could poll those folks, though seems to me it's skewed by a large representation of procrastinators, lol.

BTW, one of the beneficial side effects of our mail-in balloting is that once you vote you don't get ANY robo-calls, since it's recorded that you have already voted. Campaigns don't want to spend money on you if you've already cast your ballot. Sweet.

6. More affluent basd on $2K difference? Cost of living in Oregon is FAR higher...
Just take a look at our real estate market for an example. Numbers do not show everything.
