Round 1 goes to Obama in war with Mccain
First original post for me in GDP! Go me.

Anyway, check the below article out:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/may/19/barackobama.uselections2008

Here's a quote:

Obama is doing something altogether different. He is standing for an alternative vision of how America should operate in the world, and he is defending it tooth and nail. I'm not sold on the idea that negotiations without preconditions with hostile powers are the world's best strategy. If the US had some leverage over Iran that might be one thing, but, in our current state, we have little. Still, this is one of those cases where the symbolic message of what Obama did last Friday is more important, for now, than the substance. He said: These people have screwed up foreign policy and security. I have a different way of doing things. And I'm not ceding an inch.

This is a good manifestation of why so many Americans have rallied to Obama as the breath of fresh air the country needs right now

Returning to my thoughts now.

The article reveals how Obama has turned what has been a traditional and perceived disadvantage for democrats into a strength. He took John Mccain on on Mccain's turf and sent the republicans scurrying for cover. I believe that this is the reason why Obama is doing so well in the recent Gallup tracking poll.

I don't think we can over-estimate just how big of an asset it is to have a likely nominee who will go toe to toe with the GOP on every single issue. Even Bill Clinton didn't! We have a gem here.

PS: I'll have a post in the lounge later introducing myself but I joined to talk politics so I thought I'd get started as soon as I could:) Great board.

I'm sure things shouldn't be too bad since we're out of the heat of the primary season now.

3. Welcome to DU!
It is a great board, though not necessarily at its best during primary season.

"nominee who will go toe to toe with the GOP" - have to love that concept!

10. I was mixed about Obama taking Bush's remarks at the Knesset head on
It was obviously bait for Obama that he decided to take. The same was the case last week when McCain took the "Losing his bearings" bait and looked like an idiot for doing it.

But Obama had the footage of McCain saying we should negotiate with Hamas and that's a card I don't think anyone saw coming.

12. That footage was from Davos, where McCain knew he was talking to the adults
--who run the world. For the rest of the electorate, his schtick is the usual fearmongering directed toward people he sees as bedwetting innocents. Quite a contrast! YouTube may yet win us this election.

13. Nah, i think he just forgot his position
Edited on Mon May-19-08 12:02 AM by Hippo_Tron
Like he did with his position on sex education. Or the time when he forgot that Czechoslovakia isn't a country anymore.

11. Yes--he is breaking the Repuke "toughness" frame
--and replacing it with the "good judgment" frame. Clinton has not yet learned that you can't beat Repukes by agreeing with their frames.

14. Oh, I'm sure the Clintons and many DLCers know you can't beat Repubs...
... by agreeing with their frames.

They're very smart and savvy.

I just don't know why they never challenged the GOP and Republicans head-on, even "rolled eyes" when Dean would defend the Democratic Party on a hostile cable show like Blitzer's and Tucker's back in the day.

The Democrats that dare challenge the Repubs were reprimanded or punished.

Ever wonder why?

15. The thing is that Obama is a centrist who has been vetted by the same crowd
--but he breaks the Repuke frames at least some of the time.

16. Clintons played their game better. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you win.
But I prefer Obama's method.
