10. Some of the shit I see here at DU is BIGOTRY, pure and simple
trashing a population due to location is not much different that doing it about color. And it does not help DEMS win general elections to trash whole populations based on location.

Call the bigots on their shit. It's good for the soul. :hi:

62. While the trashing of WV is pretty lame
Its not anything like trashing based on color..

You can move, be eloquent, educated, charming, funny, and good looking and you're still going to be whatever color you were born.

Meanwhile a state can change the demographics for which it gets mocked and viola no more mocking..

74. The fly in your ointment: Mocking has little to to with truth or reality
I live in Montana, much mocked and derided. We were the first state to send a woman to Congress, have a really effective (he stood up to bush on National Guard, and DHS on Real ID - winning both contests) DEM governor and passed a medical marijuana initiative here. Long history of labor union support (some pretty radical actions back in the 30s) and a lot of 'live & let live' neighbors.
Still, I see Montana trashed around here by ignorant bigots.

Changing demographics is not the whole solution. We have to change the level of willful ignorance, and sadly, we have to do that withing our own ranks as well as the general population.

78. True that. But BIGOTRY is willful ignorance to justify hatred
Edited on Tue May-13-08 12:27 PM by havocmom
and I maintain that any willful ignorance used to justify hatred is something we at DU should point out in an effort to lessen BIGOTRY.

And, actually, I HAVE been treated poorly on a couple of occasions while traveling with MONTANA car license. I know it is NOTHING as bad as race bigotry, but it does exist. Amusing, AND bigotry.

92. Having grown up and lived till my ltae twenties in the MidWest
I understand your feelings.

The MidWest is all considered to be a big Bible thumping stomping ground for folks not smart enough to come in when it rains.

I think a lot of this is because our news people are all centered on either coast. And many East Coast people and West Couast people don't visit the interior places.

I was so surprised a week ago to hear that Matthews and Olbermann considered Wisconsin and Indiana to be identical. (Based on the two states having the same white/black demographics)

When I think of Wisconsin, I think of Che Guevara - he'd have fit in there. It's one state with very progresssive values, as farmers since the late 1890's had co-ops and other strategies that kept the bankers out and progressive values in.

When I think of Indiana, I tend to think of Dan Quayle. Though I know that Guevara would have done well in Gary or Bloomington.

I'm sitting in the line of chairs waiting for a voting station to open up, and I hear two guys who look to be in their 60's talking:

"So, who're you going to vote for?"
"Harry Truman."

So there: West Virginians *will* vote for a Democratic president - from 1948! lol

I love that stuff. There's a Slavic dish made from pigs' feet that is served in the jelly that the meat makes when cooked. It's has an acidic, pickled taste. I could go for some right now. Where's my Baba? :9

35. It's made from boiling the head of pigs or cows. The jelly it makes
is then mixed with what little meat is boiled out in the process. Then it's formed into blocks of head cheese and refrigerated.

It is truly disgusting.

It's pieces of chewy pork in a kinda gel. I bought some when we first landed down south here, and I like it much. I have strange gastronomic leanings, I guess.

87. I'm a Texan, but I have a very unusual family name
that is found almost exclusively in WV, where my father is from.

The name is Waggy, and if you ever meet one, they are my relative; separated at most by two or three generations before you will find commonality. The really sad thing is, we can trace the name back to people coming into WV from Ohio back 200 years ago or so.... and then it's lost. We have no idea what our European lineage is. I'm tempted to see what kind of DNA testing services there are that could at least tell us where to look for clues as to where the name came from.

I got my DNA done there and it confirmed at least half of what I knew (back to the 1500s!) but added other odd things I had no idea about. Definitely worthwhile if you have the cash for it! You can check out sample DNA results on the site, too.

I don't know how "into" your geneology you are, but some results may take more research to understand the connections... basically who sacked who in olden times, who invaded what countries and perhaps made their way into your family in whatever way. It's actually very interesting from a historical perspective. :)

105. Hatfields of course!
The McCoys were from mostly from Kentucky. :P

Years ago, a guy who was a descendant of one of the feud families put out a record with a bunch of songs that told the Hatfield/McCoy story.

My parents copied it to tape so we could listen to it on car trips. No kidding. lol

But actually, when someone says 'Which side are you on?' the first thing I think of is the old union song:

Come all you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how the good old union
Has come in here to dwell

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

My daddy was a miner
He's now in the air and sun
He'll be with you fellow workers
Until the battle's won

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

They say in Harlan County
There are no neutrals there
You'll either be a union man
Or a thug for J. H. Claire

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

Oh workers can you stand it?
Oh tell me how you can
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man?

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

Don't scab for the bosses
Don't listen to their lies
Poor folks ain't got a chance
Unless they organize

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

i admit that i am wary of appalachians. even though i have met many appalachians i like, i do not trust many young male appalachians - i find them proudly ignorant & prone to unprovoked violence. and believe me, having gone to HS & lived in Over the Rhine in downtown Cincinnati prior to the riots, i know of whence i speak.

71. I grew up in SE Ohio, in the Appalachian foothills.
And you got that second part right, good buddy. True story: one of my coworker's neighbors shoots her other neighbor while he's taking a crap in the outhouse (this is in the early 1990s, mind you). Neighbor 2 survives gunshot wound, crashes pickup truck into neighbor 1's trailer, seriously injuring neighbor 1. Neighbor 1 finishes the job with sawed-off shotgun blast, literally decapitating neighbor 2. Neighbor 1 gets sent up to Lucasville for six years on manslaughter charge. Six Years! For blowing the guy's head off! Turns out neighbors 1 and 2 have been literally feuding for almost a decade. A feud! In 1992!

But actually, bigotry against atheists is the the most acceptable flavor.

82. I have to admit the posts by WV DUers have been the most interesting I have read anywhere
I am fascinated by a population that takes so much pride in being different and doesn't mind what others think about it - that in itself is not a bad thing. Just out of curiousity how are inter racial couples and folks who openly practice other religions treated in WV?

101. Well, from my experience
things seem to be getting better as far as treatment interracial couples, but my experience is limited. I do know that in the 80's, when I was in high school, people seemed to look down on interracial dating and marriage more. Now it seems to be a situation where people are more tolerant; or if they're not, they don't feel as comfortable saying so in public.

A few personal anecdotes relating to race/racism in WV:

On the first day of school this year, a mother of one of my daughter's friends was at the bus stop with us and made a comment to me about kids listening to "n***** music." I politely let her know that I don't appreciate language like that, and she never used the word again in my presence. Is she a racist? Probably, but she's not willing to push it with people who aren't obviously of a like mind.

As a child in the 70's, I was at my grandmother's house and I said the racist version of eeny-meeny-miney-mo. My grandmother let me know in no undertain terms that I was *never* to use that word again. I actually didn't know what it meant at the time, though (I didn't even know it referred to people). And my grandmother used "colored," which might have been considered offensive by some people at the time. Was my grandma racist? I'd say no, not really; but she was more concerned with politness than inequality. To her the use of the n-word was an offence against polite manners, first and foremost.

I attended a high school with 400 students. There was one black kid in the whole school. To me, he seemed to be well-liked, and the fact that he was black didn't seem to matter much. Years later, however, he told me how hard it was for him to be the only black kid in an all white school, and he said he had experienced racism from some people.

As for religion, I was raised a Roman Catholic, and I was treated like an exotic creature, to some extent, because of it. (After about the 900th time, explaining that no, Catholics don't actually *worship* Mary, it gets a little old.) But I wasn't ill-treated or threatened because of it. In the 80's pagans had it hard, because everyone was convinced that anything pagan must be Satanic. That seems to have stopped now, pretty much. Other than that, it's all various flavors of Protestants here, and they tend to get along or ignore each other.

Honestly, the thing I run into most here is homophobia. In my personal experience, I meet many, many more people who are anti-gay than anything else. Maybe there's more homophobia than racism here, or maybe it's considered more acceptable to voice in public, I'm not sure.

I'm from Iowa, and many people are shocked to hear that we don't ride around
in covered wagons--and that we actually have electricity.

I was in an airport in Arizona and I struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler. Upon learning
that I was from Iowa, she said, "You're from Iowa? Do you know Eugene?". She didn't even have a last
name. She assumed there were less than 50 people in the state and that we all met at the one local
coffee shop and talked corn farming to pass the time.

Every state has their stereotypes..but please, step away from your cousin!

132. The Solid South
The South went Democratic when Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Then it went Republican when Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. Today, West Virginia voted 70-30 for Hillary Clinton after she praised hard-working white people.

Portraying Southerners as ignorant may be a euphemism for what they are . . . nasty racists.

134. Race is the Pivotal Issue
Southerners switched parties when Lincoln declared that blacks were human beings and could not be owned. They switched again when Lyndon Johnson signed into law the bill that said blacks were citizens and have civil rights. A mass defection from one party to another is not a small change. Race is the pivotal issue in Southern politics.

When Hillary praised hardworking white people just before the West Virginia primary, it wasn't a dog whistle. Everybody could hear it very clearly. West Virginia Democrats (not Republicans) rewarded her with a 70-30 margin of victory.
