I keep hearing: "There's no chance McCain will win!"

That will be our downfall as Democrats if we take for granted that we are going to win and don't fight as hard as we can in this election.

As Sun-Tzu said in "The Art of War":

"He who exercises no forethought but makes light of his opponents is sure to be captured by them." Sun Tzu (Page 41)

"If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles." Sun Tzu (Page 18)

In other words, never underestimate your opponent. I think this is the exact type of thinking we need to avoid moving forward. We need to be prepared for everything that the Republicans are going to throw at us, and have the ammo stockpiled to return fire with.

Let's not lull ourselves into a false sense of complacency. Think of the consequences for the country, and the world.

P.S.

Sorry now that I think of it this should have probably been posted in just GD instead of GD: P.

1. Yeah, but there's a VERY GOOD CHANCE
that we WILL win. That's no reason not to fight or campaign or spread the word for Obama. However, there is no doubt in my mind that this November will be a landslide for all Democrats across this nation.

3. My point exactly: It is not a reason not to fight or campaign for the Dem candidate. -n/t

2. If there is a terrorist attack, McCain will become a bigger problem than before.
Because you know he and the Repubs would use it as a stepping stone to the White House and possibly taking back Congress.

6. Well, I'm sure Bush could work something out in October...
just around the time the polls start to heavily lean towards Obama.

11. it will happen
bet on it
these fuckers are not going anywhere, and they really don't care how transparent they are.

If that doesn't work, they'll just do like the Myanmar generals: nullify the election.

12. They blatantly nullify an election
shudder...we would become a third world country overnight.

They don't have the troops to back that up. They are all overseas.

4. +2 for the Sun Tsu quotes...

...and you're right. Never underestimate your opponent.

McCain may or may not be difficult to beat, but we'd be better off handling him as a tiger than a kitten.

5. Heh.. thanks. I think that brings me back up to zero.
Agreed. If we expect the toughest fight we can imagine, we can only be pleasantly surprised. If we think it will be easy...we don't want to be surprised if it's not. The stakes are WAY too high.

7. The Repukes said the same thing about McCain last year.
Rudy was the big favorite. Romney next. McCain was definitely counted out.

So your post is spot on...

9. Complacency
is certainly to be avoided, but putting the idea out into the zeitgeist that McCain has loser written all over him can be a good thing too.

10. Oh for sure, but we're not just up against McCain..
Edited on Mon May-12-08 09:59 PM by shomino
We're up against the entire Repug-machine, including Carl Rove on Fox News, AND the sitting President who obviously is still able to wield some modicum of power even without the consent of the American people.

13. there is a chance mccain will be elected
that's a drawback in a forum like this. because most of the people here are informed and or activists we tend to be surrounded by others like ourselves and that will tend to narrow your view.
mccain can be formidable. he's not packaged as the typical repub. he's made concessions on climate change, and he's moving to the middle.
i remember all my friends in 2000 saying bush could never get elected.

16. Not only those very good points
but the press has also had a love affair with him for years. That will be our biggest stumbling block - most people haven't actually checked out mccain's insanely conservative voting record and as long as the press calls him a moderate, the average schmuck will believe it. Those that see a landslide for the dems in November are being naive.

14. McCain is a very strong candidate.
I can't believe that I see many people saying that he isn't. He is a much stronger candidate then bush was. He is well liked and he is respected. Do not underestimate McCain.

15. This is why the general campaign needs to start NOW.
People need to know if their daughter is raped she won't be able to get an abortion if McCain has his way. They need to know they will lose their employer health insurance if McCain is elected. They need to know the coffins will continue coming back from Iraq for years to come. They need to know their jobs will be at risk of outsourcing because McCain loves "free trade." Now McCain wants the "free market" to sort out the energy crisis. Oh, and the pastor whose endorsement he sought thinks the Catholic church is the "great whore" and don't forget his close call with the big house during the Keating Five scandal. Of course, other than that, he's just a regular guy with 8 houses and a wife with a hundred million dollars.
