Barr announces Libertarian White House bid
Former Republican's entry could cost McCain votes

WASHINGTON - Former Republican Rep. Bob Barr launched a Libertarian Party presidential bid Monday, saying voters are hungry for an alternative to the status quo who would dramatically cut the federal government.

His candidacy throws a wild card into the White House race that many believe could peel away votes from Republican Sen. John McCain given the candidates' similar positions on fiscal policy.

Barr, who has hired Ross Perot's former campaign manager, acknowledged that some Republicans have tried to discourage him from running. But he said he's getting in the race to win, not to play spoiler or to make a point.

Edited on Mon May-12-08 06:43 PM by Boz
His followers are actually challenging McCains nomination, I don't mean rhetorically, they could by technicalities and some very well planned,(and even in some cases already executed) convention and rules maneuvering mess up McCains delegates enough, to make him challenged for the actual Nom.

2. I wonder if the media will pay any attention to him...
The only reason Perot got as far as he did (besides using tons of his own money) was because the media payed attention to him and included him in debates.

105. They only included him in debates because he used tons of $$
I remember him buying entire blocks of TV time and taking his case directly past the media. Had he not done that, they certainly wouldn't have given him the time of day BUT they were losing their audiences and they knew it. So THEY jumped on HIS bandwagon. I sure hope Barr raises tons of $$ :)

109. The war was the big problem in the 60's or I should be
more accurate and say the DRAFT was the problem in the late 60's. When just the poor and brown skinned people were going (to Vietnam) it was no problem. When draft deferments were up and the young man didn't want to be a father his middle-class white ass went to Vietnam.......that was the problem (the rich and connected didn't need to worry there were still plenty of soft jobs available for their college educated boys, like Texas Air National Guard.

This time it's all volunteer so .....no draft, no problem.

The deal with Hillary/Obama will work its' self out when Hillary withdraws from the race. If it's a brokered convention and there is any real chance the Democratic Party muckty-mucks will take it away from Obama.....look out, all bets are off.....anyone remember the phrase "burn baby burn"?

But realistically I would bet on peace and mostly tranquility at the convention.

Well, that particular redundancy factor, I suppose, would preclude them from running on the same ticket.

I almost forgot the "Pro-Lifer, Family-Values Dicks Whose Second Wives Had Abortions" voting block...as well as the "Cheated On Their Second Wives With Those Who Become Their Third" demographic.

It's getting tough to keep these scandals straight.

41. Oh, I don't know...
...Paul is the type of guy who would probably be completely open to a VP run on Barr's ticket if he was asked, and with the loyalty and composition of his support base that would have to be damn tempting for Barr to make the offer. Paul isn't exactly a party line Republican, I get the impression he'd have no problem with a spoiler role against McCain. He's already come out and suggested he might prefer Obama over him after all.

And if it ends up being Barr/Paul McCain's legs will get cut right out from under him. It would be glorious to watch.

56. Of course they're crazy
...which is why given the choice of voting for McCain or voting for any ticket with "Ron Paul" anywhere in it they'll flock to Paul. Of course they'd prefer him as a presidential candidate, but wave putting him in the White House in any capacity in front of them and they'll all start salivating.

And he's getting attention poaching Republican votes now, but that will end after the convention. A third party run with Barr keeps him front and center through November.

76. Straightup Obama vs.McCain we win. Now we may be looking at a landslide
with very long coattails.

Liddy Dole in North Carolina and John Cornyn in Texas are both under 50% approval rate and could well lose their Senate seats. And those are just the seats that come immediately to mind.

78. Still think McCain is going to be the GOP candidate come November?
I don't.

Unless the Repukes just want to hand over all the mess to the Dems to clean up or take the blame when the shit hits the fan big time. I am beginning to believe that they really want to lose.

79. I don't think they mind a McCain loss.
That would scare all the middle of the road Republicans back in line. Especially good if they can say Paul helped them lose so they can have no third con party opposition. I think they plan on just fuxing up everything the Democrats try to do for the next four years, getting all the MSM to carry on a non-stop coverage of how the mess we will inherit is the Dems fault. The public has bought it before. What's four years when you are looking at trillions of dollars.

Win win for them even if McCain wins. They will just heart attack him and put their selected VP in.

It doesn't end in November. It will just be starting.

94. You're probably right
but, one advantage of an Obama presidency for the next 4 years (and hopefully 8)will be that his choice replaces John Paul Stevens on the Supreme Court, and probably Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

and, we have 4 years (hopefully 8) of Obama appointing judges to the federal judiciary. We've had Republics appointing them 20 of the last 28 years now, and Clinton had many more obstructed than Bush, Bush or Reagan.

101. Yup,
We need a Democrat as president to just keep even in the SC. Stevens and Ginsberg need to be replaced with justices at least as liberal. That is why I said it only starts in November. republicans will block any attempt to nominate good judges. They threw holy fits when the Democrats even tried to question their appointments and, of course Dems lacked the will to filibuster. The repubs will filibuster and cheat and block almost anyone the Dem president will nominate. We need an extra couple of dozen Democrats in congress, ones with a little more guts than the lite weights we have had. They will need to hold the president's feet to the fire to get him to nominate someone good. I am a little concerned that Obama seemed to originally think Roberts was a good choice until he was advised otherwise. We don't need a president appointing justices with his eyes on the 2012 election. We have to win big in November, with a big jump in majorities in both houses. Then we need to keep pushing. The republicans certainly will.
