Kerry Rally in Taylor, Michigan
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 09:47 PM by ajacobson
Just got back from the Kerry rally in Taylor, Michigan. I guesstimate that there was a couple of thousand people, which is not too bad because most of the crowd was invited, and the location of the rally was not discussed in the local news coverage. I got there late enough to just walk in, the gatetenders weren't picking up tickets at that point.

Kerry's speech was basically the same material from the acceptance speech, but somewhat reordered. The delivery was lively, even though it was after 9:00 p.m. The crowd was pretty responsive, as much as you can be, standing around the perimeter fence of a softball diamond. The most interesting part was at the end (end of the rally but before the alleged softball game was to start, the players were lined up on the baselines for at least an hour, probably more) where Kerry came up to the fence line to press the flesh, that created a lot of excitement.

Considering that Michigan has been deemed one of the key battleground states, I imagine I'll get more changes to see the candidate. As for the non-battleground states, your vote just doesn't count (just kidding!!!!)

on edit: typo

2. Invited only? What's up with that?
I thought only Bush had those kind of 'rallies'.

Can you explain the nature of this Kerry rally?

4. Ours in Greensburg, PA was called an invite only, too.
Basically, it means you had to have a ticket which you were 'invited' to download from the internet or given as a volunteer. I understand from talking to one of the volunteers yesterday that they are doing that only for security purposes and crowd control.

Of course, a lot of the big-wig local politicians had special seating, but that's to be expected at any rally.

5. ok, so it wasn't invited since anyone could have done it
that's how most of the events are because they don't have room many times so they have to do it by tickets. if you can't get a ticket that means there is probalby no more room.

i thought you meant invited in the sense that they send specific invites to specific people.

6. They weren't invitation only
I wasn't invited.

I heard he was in Taylor on TV found an article in google breaking news from a local paper.

It listed the number to call for tickets.

I called the Taylor Dem organization they said come down and get them.

I went there and they gave me tickets.

No one I talked to in line was invited.

Where'd you hear this was invitation only?

7. Read my post above.
It was CALLED 'invite only' but you could get tickets for it on the internet. Realistically it was 'ticket only' but even when we got there you could get a ticket from a number of sources. It is just to limit the crowd.

3. I live in Montana
which is pretty safely in boy George's column so you are right, aj.
Politically my vote won't count but morally it will go into the nationwide popular vote column.
