For the first part of the 20th century, the Democratic party was the refuge of racists.
Sometime in the 50’s and 60’s an increasingly large number of democratic leaders decided to abandon our racist past and forge a new path.
At that time the Republicans (you know, the party of Lincoln) had a choice; welcome the democrats to what could have been argued to be a republican position or embrace the racist politics and people that the Democrats had abandoned.
The Democrats knew that they were going to take a big hit and that it might be a full generation before they recovered politically, but I guess they thought that the politics of the day were less important than either the morality of the civil rights issues, or, if we are going to be cynical, the (very) long term political potential.
We democrats spent the next 40 to 50 years recovering politically from the principled and moral stand brave men and women took while republicans elected to flush their morals down the toilet to pander to racists and bigots.
Now, when we have rebuilt our party strength, reaped the benefits of our ethical stand and developed a wonderful coalition of black, white and brown Americans, Hillary Clinton’s campaign seems poised to throw the progress we’ve made under the bus, showing herself willing to destroy a 50 year legacy for a short term political advantage.
I am on record here saying I’ll vote for the democratic nominee, no matter who he or she turns out to me. I’d like to amend my position by saying that the nominee has to actually act like a democrat.
Rant off. Sorry.
