Early Prediction: It's going to be Obama/Sibelius vs McCain/Pawlenty

Obama's choice would appeal to the midwest, women, disappointed Hillary Clinton supporters and would not outstage him. She's not the loudest speaker, but with the full throated attack on Roe vs Wade as McCain's challenge to appeal to the Repigious Reich, she can certainly hold her own on that issue.

Here's a glimpse of the spin:

One of the key reasons Kansas Democrats are in fighting mood is their governor, Kathleen Sibelius. Sibelius's vote represents an island of Democratic blue in a sea of Republican red on the political map, and she has impressed by reaching the middle-ground voters in a startlingly successful first term. Shunning the hot-button social issues, she has focused on education, jobs and health. This has earned her approval ratings touching 68 per cent in a state that was overwhelmingly pro-Bush in 2004.

Sibelius has cracked the political holy grail: persuading heartland Republicans to vote Democrat. 'Her style works here, and then bringing over Parkinson to the Democrats has been the coup of all coups,' said Professor Bob Beatty, a political scientist at Washburn University near Topeka.

I'd like Jim Webb or Richardson as VP, but they can be strong cabinet members...

McCain will choose Minnesota's governor, Tim Pawlenty as his VP. He's younger, has campaigned for McCain in the primaries, or as this site (warning: it's a tad red):

Pawlenty's low-key, regular-guy persona has gone over so well with suburbanites inclined to vote for "Minnesota nice," and Pawlenty would probably go over better with female voters than a crusty old-timer like Fred Thompson or Phil Gramm.

A little more into Pawlenty's schtick:

At CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference), Pawlenty laid out what he calls his “Sam’s Club conservatism,” which he contrasts with “country club conservatism.” He says that his vision is necessary to confront “new political realities”:

‘The country is changing,’ Pawlenty says. ‘Socially, demographically, economically, technologically. And that doesn’t mean that you throw your principles that you built your party on, your philosophy on, out the window–you just have to make sure they are translated into terms…relevant in the political marketplace of today, not to mention tomorrow.’

He also gets the so-called Pro-Life nod:

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty is drawing praise from pro-life advocates for his appointment of Eric Magnuson as the next chief justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. The state's high court has been a thorn in the side of pro-life groups for years for a 1995 decision requiring the state to pay for abortions with tax dollars.

(snip)

"This is the fourth appointment to the Minnesota Supreme Court by pro-life Governor Tim Pawlenty and we are pleased with his appointments," Fischbach said. "Governor Pawlenty has been a strong pro-life Governor signing into law our Woman's Right to Know law.

Hey, I could be wrong. I think it's certainly possible. It's also time for Democrats to start focusing on this opportunity to kick the Republicans' butts up and down the voting tally in the fall.

3. Still hoping for Obama / Webb but I could work with Obama / Sibelius.
One thing is clear: "Obama / Sibelius" would be the funkiest named Democratic ticket ever. Who would have thunk?

4. Nope on the Obama/Sibelius.
WE might like her, but the majority of America doesn't even know her. Need more name recognition to entice the on-the-fence moderate Republicans.

We have to remember whose votes we're going after.

16. I have to agree
I don't know her. I'm not directly involved in politics, but I do read a lot about current affairs, politics, etc. and she has NO name recognition to serve as an immediate "marker" for me.

I think Obama will need to go with a male who can help with some people's "anxieties."

My personal choice is Richardson. But who knows. Richardson would help with the hispanic vote and would counter McCain's western states draw. He doesn't look totally 'other' to some voters who might i.d. with racist sentiments, sad as that is to say.

Obama is already a strong midwestern candidate, imo. I don't know what the strategy is for the Obama campaign, or what the numbers look like, but just based upon my gut reading of the American public, I think they wouldn't find a female, white or no, as comforting to their fears. Even tho I want to move beyond bubba pandering, there are lots of Americans who will need to find a touchstone, so someone with more name recognition is needed, imo.

No matter who the candidate may be, GOTV and early voting are essential issues for the Obama campaign. Especially in the south.

8. Pawlenty? Nah... they couldn't be that stupid, could they?
Would they really run the guy who caused this...........

For the record, I'm not sure about Sebelius either. Unless Obama plans on naming his entire cabinet before November (which is unlikely) he's going to need a running mate that will neuter the FEAR TERRA NATIONAL SECURITY !!!111!!! spin coming from the 'Pukes.

9. I will vote for Obama no matter what, but from what I've seen of
Sibelius, she's way to meek, mild & layed back for the VP slot. I will trust Barack & his team to choose someone who will insure a winning ticket.

Edited on Fri May-09-08 01:59 PM by barack the house
Who is reasonably young and strong and able to whoop some GOP behind in 8 years time. I have never known Randi to ever, ever be wrong it's gotta be Janet. ESPECAILLY to take McCain's home state where she is universally loved.

14. nope ... McCain/Romney
McCain wants to make sure that Obama doesn't pick off Nevada and Colorado. He also wants to put MI in play.

15. McCain doesn't witn without the hard core R base, who don't trust him
He needs to pick a VP who appeals to them. McCain isn't red meat--he's trying to run like he is, but everyone knows he isn't--and he needs red meat on his ticket.
